Title: The wine thread!
Post by: ToxicAvenger on September 12, 2006, 01:43:53 PM
As the resident lush i want this to be a "my current fav wine" kinda thread...

currently i seem to be into ports..and i've gotton re acquainted with an old friend.. " mavaro daphni" its made by kurtaki and you'll only be ale( :D) to find it in greek resturants and diners...and well greek orthodox church (dont ask how i know :P )

its very high in alkie content and leaves excellent trails...almost syrupy and very sweet. Greeks love their alkie so if ya visit a diner i'm sure you'll be able to ask them part with a bottle..(not many places cork where i live)

<side note: uzo with cold water....great!>

'cept I wear myopic specs (for driving and tv) and therefore cannot read the labels.

fortunately most of my mates/neighbours and family understand a good gotttle. I don't.

Please pontificate.  I think this might be a great learning thread.  I know pino grigio and merlot with meat.

There is probably a great song about this.   xl

i suppose you have to do this fine wine thread in tandem with the what's for dinner thread.

I've never learned how to be a conossoueir(sP) , because I'll drink cheap plonk.

It would be good though, if we did this learning thread.

Do you have to learn the regions first, or what type of grape.
Which country?

Or is it about what food it goes with?

I'd like to learn
Perhaps I don't need to, as I've always had someone else read the list and order for me.
And pay for all of it

     Also to play the music.
                                   xL

But I should learn

can we?

ok i dont follow the tradational red with steak bullshit...live outside the box a little..i'm a red only kinda dood....white wine is for people that dont really know or like wine but still wanna hold a glass of wine at socials... :D

the colder it gets the drier the wine i prefer..the warmer it is the sweeter i go...(ports not included)....so its aussie shiraz (even though cali makes a damn good shiraz)...so personally as far as reds go and as i feel..in accending order of dryness..my personal opinion..

aussie shiraz.
american shiraz
cali merlots
cali cabs
petite syrah
turpentine :D

dont ask me where bordeaux falls on that list..it stands alone as a different mood :)

btw..the best way to learn is to go by the bottle and drink it...

remember...after opening the bottle let it breath for a good 20mins before drinking :)

the ashes are coming up...as good as an ocassion to learn :)

decanting wines is always a good option.  Good bottles will still have the "madre" or "mother" settled at the bottom.  You could take a lesser wine and make it somewhat better by pouring it over teh mother and letting it sit.  Australia and Chile have some great wines coming out.  As does Germany.  I stick to reds myself as i have only found one white wine that was worth drinking, but have yet to find it again.  And that one was an expensive bottle.  I am still partial to French and Spanish wines.  A good Rioja for the tablee is nice.  And during summer a rioja sangria is nice

A topic dear to my heart.
Mind you I don't know as much as I should or pretend to.

One of the basic mistakes I find new people make is rather simple.
Most wines not all though but a fair amount are priced as they should be.
Take the next step up in the price range (at least a $10 jump) and you will be pleasantly surprised by the quality difference.

If you can find any and it hasn't been priced out of your range the 1984 year for most European wines was an amazing Vintage.  You won't go wrong buying any of those bottles.

Personally I like the French and Italian wines.
Chianti Classico Brolio my personal fav.

Mark your calendars Beaujolais Nouveau are just around the corner.

EXCELLENT THREAD Tox... thanks for the PM to alert me to it!

I have to say that I enjoy both red and whites fairly equally.  If I'm at home, I tend to want an earthy, spicey, dry red (Cal cabs  SOOO yum) because they tend to relax me.  When I'm out to dinner, I usually want a crisp, lightly sweet and fruity riesling.... they tend to make me feel a little more vibrant.  Reds relax me tooooo much, and when I have them when I'm out to eat, I wanna sleep..... not good to do at the table with yer date.... German rieslings are my fave when eating out.

The best find for a red is Truth... a $17 bottle of wine that tastes like it could easily cost $50 or more...

Tox, I still have that Inniskillin ice wine sitting in my fridge.... The O is in 2 1/2 weeks... the minute I step off the plane and am back in NY, that baby's getting popped open and lovingly guzzled  :D

Sad thing is, I'll probably be eating pizza with it..... :-\ :o

This is the best thread - Oh Tox I love my wines!!!

I prefer dry reds over just about any.  I was in France some years ago and stayed a week at a cooking school then drove up the "wine route" through Burgundy then into the champagne region.  At the school, one afternoon we had a man that owned a winery and taught us some basics about wines and champagnes.  It was sooooo fantastic!!!  We stayed in a small town of Beaune, right in the heart of the Burgundy region.  We picked some grapes off the vine and they were so good.

Oh, so sorry, I am getting off the track.  The one thing I can say about the French is that they are so civilized when it comes to their wines.  I think I drank wine with every meal!! One gentleman I met in Rheims told me that when he has to pick out a champagne it takes him a couple of minutes because all French champagnes are good.  But when it comes to picking out a wine, it will take alot longer depending on the type of wine, region it comes from, the year, etc.  Champagne can only be called champagne if it comes from the region in France that makes champagne.  From anywhere else it is sparkling wine.

I really like to try all kinds of wines in different price ranges.  I have actually found a couple for $2.99 that aren't too bad.  But a vin rouge is my fav.

Since they are so sweet I generally stick to fresh fruit when I have a glass (chilled not cold). I've heard of them being also being used in making jellies and as ingredients in cocktails (be kinda pricy I'd think :-\) and being blended with brandy - none of which I've ever tried. On a side note I've notice that a re-corked bottle will last rather well in the fridge for a couple of days (maybe cause of the high sugar content?) not that mine hang around that long usually :P ;D

I have tried that Charles Shaw.  Not bad, not great, but for $2, what would you expect!

On the coffee front, I am not a Starbucks fan either.  I prefer to grind my own coffee.  The best coffee I had was in San Francisco at a little place called Cafe Trieste (I think that is how it is spelled).  It is located in North Beach.  The latte I've ever had!!!  Peet's would come in a close 2nd!

The French have Champagne, which is totally overpriced
and the Spanish version is cheap Cava.

My current (affordable and half decent) favourite (and the trendy drink at present, in London), is Proscecco, from Italy.

It's a sparkly white.

For some reason, I cannot drink red wine.  Well I can, but I look a mess after two sips.  My lips and tongue go completely mad red and I look like bloody hell.

I love the way you say, "I Love You,"
And the way you're always there.

Nope...happy hour has long gone by. It was sunday after the turkey and yesterday after the turkey  :P  Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...now i'm getting in the mood

ohhhh  did I miss Canadian and American Thanksgiving again?  (my calender got burned)

I once went to a party where they cooked some exotic (meat) fest.

(my modify addition:  I've just remembered it was fowl:  a pheasant or a brace or 5).

And I was told which wine to bring.  Took me 3 (only the very best mind you) shops to find the stuff and it was like £12 a bottle.  I nearly didn't make it to the party.  I dislike that snobbishness.  No, hang about, perhaps I love it but cannot afford it.  We drank 20 bottles of extremely expensive gorgeous wine.  And I ate a little bit of a dead bird.

I'll drink cheap Pinot Grigio.

What's the correct wine for Thanksgiving Turkey in your country?

with love

We do Harvest Festival and also drink cheap "scrumpy" cider...

What's wrong with working for hallmark?

I love the way you look at me,
Your eyes so bright and blue.
I love the way you kiss me,
Your lips so soft and smooth.

I love the way you make me so happy,
And the ways you show you care.
I love the way you say, "I Love You,"
And the way you're always there.

 :P

perhaps Deedee has just admitted that she writes words.

Whatta great job.  I love it.  I guess you get paid lots.

(I loved it once in TO when a mate of mine got a £25,000 a year job and that was 20 years ago, for picking the names of lipsticks...

But writing words for cards for people to choose?  That takes more than style, that takes talent.

I'm impressed.

Back to the wine thread and my unit I'm allowed...

It's not even happy hour yet... tsk, tsk  :)

They've banned (years ago) happy hour here in England.  No more 2 for 1
(that's the pubs and wine bars)

But we can still go to a posh shop and get sloshed on freebies and get home with a nice bottle for under £5...

oh look

I'm extemely sorry for doing mulitple posts.  I don't have time to invent other namesakes in order to really bother you.

I really don't think it's going to upset you that much that I think of 3 thoughts in this last hour on this one topic, does it?  I've also done the dishes.

I'm not a computer whiz, nor a paranoid schizo.  I'm a wino
