so mars starts a thread called "pushups are for pussies" and then responds to his own post with this:

I thought we killed this last week.....yeah u can get a pump....or maybe warm up or pre exhaust but growth...like a BB wants no way. Even 5 min straight.....with no head bob..90 degrees break the plane real Push ups etc..they still won't do jack shit for mass.

No, if you cant lift your own bodyweight off the ground, then you are indeed a pussy.
Therefore if you CANT do pushups......YOU ARE A PUSSY!!!!!!!!

I call bullshit on that one. When I went to basic training 03 I had hardly ever worked out. Push ups added a great deal of mass to my chest. You're right that you wont get a contest chest from just push ups but you can put on a great deal of mass if you work up to a lot of push ups (like 80-120 in two minutes).

I use diamondback pushups as part of my triceps workout, I'be worked up to five sets of 60 which I do on Saturday morning in the living room before I go out into the gym and start with the weights. Since I started this: (1) the "horeshoe" ridge in my triceps has emerged in greater detail and (2) the strength in my bench has gotten better.
Plus, it's a greta exercise for those of us who travel and don't always have access to a gym.

I do them sometimes on days where I train back and chest together (at the end of my routine.) I feels like it help bring them together. Also, it hits other fibers that dont get hit with typical reps. Just my opinion.

Your right!

I could see how pushups and their variations could be a good addition to a weight training program. Doing pushups by themselves will only help a total beginner and will very quickly plateau. The best variation of the pushups IMO is the handstand pushups, these will hit your shoulders very well especially if you put your hands on two elevated surfaces for a greater range of motion.

Yeah because u hardly worked out prior to...I'm sorry i disagree..we do them all the time and they just don't add mass. But I know nothing about u..what u ate..what else u were doing etc.

I don't know about the "best." As I noted in an earlier post diamondback pushups are great for isolation on the triceps, they take the chest about 80% out of the exercise.

pushups are a good pump in tris and chest...so is having sex missionary position...works out abs too
-
Pushups with added resistance are great. Diamond pushups are great for tris.
Calisthenics = weights will make you more athletic looking than just weights.

Yeah I guess this is what I was getting at but your not gonna look like a "BB" from push ups. I do close grip or diamonds to finish tri's..its different. Another guy posted a 5 min PU routine that a bunch of guys debated.

Pushups with extra resistance will build muscle, like weights will, while creating an athletic look. Standard pushups will really tighten up the chest, shoulders and tris; if you can do high reps on pushups you'll have some strength.

I have absolutely no idea how many push-ups I can do - I may give it a go just for the hell of it.
-
other than the pump, i doubt there is much benefit to pushups... i often do a few sets to warm up my chest though
-
I usually do a 100, or so, Hindu push-ups, which are related to dive bomber's, before a upper body workout. One arm push-up's can also be a challenge for most guy's. I believe Headhuntersix is in the military so he may be familar with three clap push-ups. Develops explosive speed with strength and a certain amount of muscle. May want to try push-up's where the heels of the hand are facing forward (or facing each other). Wrist flexability can be a problem at first. Quite a few martial arts players/fighters do this version, as well as finger tip push-ups.. Interlacing the fingers (diamonds/French or what ever name?) hits the triceps well.
The higher the legs the more difficult. So if you have a ladder (prefer 5-6ft) try putting the feet at different steps levels for the push-ups. Work your way up from the bottom each set until reaching the top level.Than back down again to the lowest step. Just think of doing flat benches and working up to incline benches and back down again to the flat bench. Good muscle and strength builder.
I consider the dip to be a form of a push-up. It is one of the best all around upper body builder, even with only bwt. When heavy weights are attached it becomes one of the prime muscle mass and power builders anyone could do. I prefer it over the BP as a mass builder. Good Luck.
