Title: Cable pulldown question?
Post by: Carter on September 20, 2006, 06:42:41 PM
Hi, when you do the cable pull downs, do you "really" have to make the bar touch the tip of the chest? And if you can't make it touch for say, past 5 reps, does it mean the load is to heavy?

I mean, I still can pull the bars at 70 yet at the latter reps i couldn't make the bar touch my chest.
i.e. at the latter reps, the distance between the bar and the chest should roughly be 3 inches or less...

Thanks so much.

I almost never touch my chest. Go about chinlevel.

On front pulldons with shoulder width grip i pull to just below my chin, my first set with lightest weight goes to about upper shest but rest is just past chin.
With closegrip pulldowns (palms facing me) i try pull down to mid chest so bar almost touches chest and try and squeeze.

I've never seen a Pro or top BB'er touch their chest when doing over hand lat pulldowns (including chins). They will half rep the total set. As a matter of fact, most will do curl grip pulldowns when using a cable pulldown machine.

If Carter is concerned about doing correct, by the book, style exercises, than touch the chest each rep and even pause for a second in that position. You will bring the posterior delts more into play. Carter is using too much weight if his rep goal is 10 or 12 full ROM. Drop the weight to a lower selection. (Vince G. stressed touching the bar between the center and upper chest when chinning. No sure of his views about a lat machine though) If one want's to enter the real world of BB'ing, he will find that touching the chest each rep is not needed as far a pure muscle growth is concerned. Free will is unchecked in BB'ing, so the choice is yours to do with what you want. Good Luck.

middle of the neck is fine or right at the top of the chest never go any lower you take the movement off the lats.
Also make sure you do wide for middle and lower lats, and a closer grip for upper and outer lats.Always sit upright don't lean back if at all very slightly.bring elbows back not straight down......
