I've gone to 245 but they weren't full reps and I was closely watched by a spotter.

I can get about 6 with 240 (a tad over 225), seated. I normally do triple drops with this - 240 x 6  +  185 x 8  + 135 x12 or so. I do 3 sets, before moving on to the next one.

I have done 225 once. I didnt like it though. That was a tad too heavy, Form was awful

I just really got into those drop sets. The feel like pain from the depths of hell but them shits really work

I always liked drop sets for the psychological benefits. Doing more reps with higher weight makes me feel stronger, even though they're my first real sets.

Agree 100%. I do triple drops on almost all my compounds and compounds are the only things I do, apart from a teeny weeny bit of cable or machine work for the last exercise.

Standing is more difficult unless you are making it a Chris Mason full body exercise.

hurt my shoulder wrestling in high school, I can do a ton of weight but I only lower the bar to eye level, if I go any lower my shoulder hurts for days, I've done 245 in the past, on a smith I can do alot more.

is this a serious question? 225 shoulder press is about as impossible as a 315lb bench for a serious lifter...

impossible to believe that you can't do it!  ;D  if you're a big dude and naturally strong you can hit well above that easily if you train for it..i hit 300 before I started my last cycle.

when i do dumbbell presses, I let the medial end of each barbell touch my front delt. Is that too far down. Some say you bring them down to where they are on the level same as your head.

i've pressed 315 seated with nothing in me at a bodyweight of 235. i can press 225 all day long, its not even that heavy. if you've been training hard for 4 years you should be able to press over two plates easy.

Na for real man. Military press weight increased directly proportionate to my bench. Unless you hit a monster plateu it is not only possible but expected to get to 225.

Thanks mate. And I'm a lifetime natty. I haven't even tried prohormones. I'm thinking of switching over to the dark side as I've damn near reached the limit of natural growth.

I've popped my shoulder on heavy db presses twice!   Suffice it say I only use free weight bb, smith and hammer strength for presses now.

how do you know when you cant grow any more (if youre a natural). Like do you see that in a year the gains are comming few and far inbetween. I only ask because i can be classified as a farely big guy and i havent really been training as crazy as i can as well i have never stuck to a supplement plan. and i still look like a body builder. And i tell myself that if i stuck to a supplement plan and a tough training regiment i have a long way before i top out

I've been going on and off for about 10 years now. Am 30 and weigh about 220 @ 5'8" plus. But I look really, really dense and thick and am constantly told that I can easily pass for someone who weighs 240 - 245 lbs, although I'm a fat f*ck as well ;D

A lot of people don't have enough shoulder flexibility to sit in a vertical seat and press. And most people who sit in the vertical seat still bend their lower back which isn't a good thing anyway. You're better off putting the bench on a steep incline and press, with your back fully braced against the length of the bench. Besides, like me, Alex is pretty thick, so you can see that his arms are still vertical during the pressing phase.

I haven't been in a gym to train for over a month now since getting kicked out.  Last week I was in Hilo at the gym we are doing over there.  There was 225 in the power rack.  I was sitting on the bench talking to the guys and leaning against the bar while talking.  One of the guys asked me if I coudl do that. I said I should but I haven't lifted in a month.  I ws doing an easy 10 to 15 reps with 225 before getting kicked out so I figured I should be able to do this at least once.  So I tried it.  And all I could get was one.  If I wanted toblow a nut I could have done 2.  I can't believe how weak I got in such a short time.  Unreal. I will be starting from square one again once I get back.

Man tell me about it... about a year ago a triceps pulldown that wasn't bolted down tilted over while doing the whole stack.. avoided it just in time, but the bar hit me in the face. Threathen to sue them and they eventually "settled". Part of the agreement, can't really tell who it was but let's just say it start with 24 and end with fitness  8)...

never more

I would like to see anyone on this site post a video of them handling 225 lbs EASILY in the STANDING overhead press.  I would also like to see a video of anyone EASILY handling over 250 lbs in the seated press.

These are certainly not impossible lifts but they are very good and pretty rare.

Seated no problem.  I never stand and do military.  I've gone up to 315 but my shoulder tweeked out and luckily heald ok.  I usually just do 225 for reps now and hit heavy dumbells.

i want to know wtf is up with people calling out for videos of some ordinary lifts with regular old weights?  ??? i mean really..ya'll gotta be some highschool jv swim team mother fuckers to not move some of this stuff...either that or you just dont know how to train and eat right...225 and even 250 on seated presses are STAPLE in decent shoulder workouts...give it a rest.

i'm permitted one meltdown a month right? hey if chicks can do it then why can't i?

In my case it is meant to be taken as sarcasm (not the persona on here, but rather tongue in cheek) as some of the threads and the wanted responses are stupid. Who cares about a 225 shoulder press? Or a 315 bench?

I know maybe they are milestones for some, but, to come on here and brag about them to me is pointless and jeuvenille so I have some fun with it.

my last set of cling and press is with 225, so its standing military style, i usualy get 3-5 reps, havent gone any heavier. at 195 and natural thats not bad. once i get on i expect to see alot better improvments

After 5 years of natural training i could hit 3 smooth reps with 225 doing standing overhead press with knees "locked" after cleaning it from the floor...seated i remember hitting 275 for a few.

honestly i find it "extremely" hard to believe a natural could press the 120 DBs or better with full range of motion. that would be unreal, but i guess it could happen.

Maybe because in the new gym they actually had some real plates.

Its weird but me too I have always been really strong on dumbells. I've done 95 pounders x 6 for shoulder presses pyramided.

obviously i mean a TOTALLY LIFETIME NATURAL guy of normal height and bone structure, a 250lb. juicer would be in a different league or at least should be but i believe in Stuart McRoberts poundage and bodyweight goals for a lifetime natural, 300lb. bench, 450lb. squat, 500lb. deadlift, 175 for 6 full reps on seated shoulder presses and 195lb. bodyweight at average height and relatively lean are good goals.

most people cheat on shoulders and do them on a decline seated, or partial range of motion.

I opt to use less weight then dicking around with heavy.

Even for naturals it is all relative to weight. A natural guy who weighs 250 should be able to push 185 for 6 fairly easily.

I would like to see anyone on this site post a video of them handling 225 lbs EASILY in the STANDING overhead press.  I would also like to see a video of anyone EASILY handling over 250 lbs in the seated press.

These are certainly not impossible lifts but they are very good and pretty rare.

Chris, put $500 into an escrow account or PayPal to Ron and give me one month of training and I will do 250 lbs. for 10 reps in the seated front press.  I will pause at the bottom of each rep a minimum of 1 second and go all the way up.  I will video tape it and all.  Right now I have no gym to go to but I could go pay for a month at the other gym in town.  All I need is one month to get that weight back.  Thats just $2 a pound.

And by the way that is 10000% natural and drug free

You seem to have a bit of trouble with understanding how strong 95% of the population is.  Your claimed lifts (which I tend to believe) place you in the absolute upper echelon of strength athletes (your best lifts).  99.9% of the population cannot match those lifts and yet you seem to think them pedestrian.  Overhead pressing anything over 200 lbs is quite good and most assuredly well above average.  Yes, plenty of people can do it but plenty cannot come close.  As much as I hate to agree with sarcasm I think he is spot on with what he has said in this thread.  Oh, and before you get all excited again I know several of the strongest men in the world and have a pretty solid grasp on what is a good lift and what isn't.

I think a good rule of thumb for a natural to achieve is relative to bodyweight:

bench = 2 x bodyweight
squat = 3 x bodyweight
deadlift = 3 x bodyweight

It's all relative.  ;D

I'm not quite as big now as I was then. Plus, at a heavier bodyweight that exercise was much easier on my elbows. I can press 205 for 4-5 reps (barbell). Another month or two, and I should be able to hit 225 for that same amount of reps.

Nonsense. An unequipped 405 bench press is definitely not a "joke". The number of people who can honestly lift that kind of weight is very, very small. Even serious powerlifting gyms don't have many people benching over 405. The USAPL Texas state record is something like 420 lb in the 198 class.

I don't agree about the shoulder presses, either. The bench press has very little carry over to the overhead press. There are lots of powerlifters with huge benches who can't overhead press for shit. It's a completely different exercise.

danielson you are a tool. i benched 405 for one( chest is my weakest bodypart) and could shoulder press 315 for 3(last one was assited). if you can bench 365 for four about what i can do you should surely be able to press 225 for once, more like 10-12 at least. your statement ruins your credibility. i am natural. it's funny when people argue about natural status, when put in perspective what is natural, supplementing with anything blurs the line. with nothing but food and hard training i got to these numbers. i was natually strong although i seem to be tapering out. these numbers are also a joke for powerlifters, natural again. i have a buddy who benches 500 with a shirt at 195 pounds and not a thing in him. go to a powerlifting meet and if you go there with your pre-conceived limits you will be blown away at what some of the guys can do.

Those are my lifts dude, sorry they cause you such great distress. I have always been a heavy bencher, maybe it's because I have been doing pushups for over 20 years for MA's? As far as me saying I could win a contest, where the fuck did you get that? I don't need to go to a contest to see people who are stronger than me. I see them in the gym all the time.

I can shoulder press 225 naturally for reps/sets, my strongest exercise , I have naturally gifted shoulders so it comes easy, I don't do freeweight (barbelly press anymore) but in the smith I can rep them out all day.

I don't agree about the shoulder presses, either. The bench press has very little carry over to the overhead press. There are lots of powerlifters with huge benches who can't overhead press for shit. It's a completely different exercise.

I'm gonna have to disagree here.  The bench press does have a significant carryover to the overhead press and vice versa.  Think about it, for bench press your using pectoralis major, triceps brachii and anterior delts as agonists which are basically the same muscles recruited in the overhead press, in addition with upper trapezius involvement.  Only thing really changing are % recruitment in the involved musculature and of course, the differences in anatomical leverage characteristics when pressing in a supine position as opposed to upright.

So some guy comes on here claiming a 365x4 bench which equals an estimated 1-rep max of 412 (1.130x365) and yet only overhead presses less than half that; that does not make sense from a physiological point of view.

Just to keep things in honest perspective.

How does that not make sense? I've benched 380, but can only do one or two reps with 225 on the overhead press. Those lifts are perfectly consistent with one another. I actually have a hard time believing that anyone with a 405 bench could shoulder press 315 for 3 reps, as "usmokepole" was claiming. That's the kind of shoulder strength you would expect from a 500+ bencher.

Title: Re: How many here can shoulder press over 225 Naturally?

I'm not sure this is revalent.  I just started back training hard in January. I finally got my bench back up to 405 for 3 or 4 reps depending in feeling.  I was doing 315 seated front presses for 6 to 8 depending.  I very rarely do more than 6 reps and if I do I'll 8.  Most of the time I would just stick with 225 or 275.  But my shoulders were and have been my strong point.  I am okay in the bench but definitely not as much as I thought I should have been.  I have very strong triceps and my upper arm stays very hard no matter how long I stay out of the gym.  I just have strong tri's.  I know that is a very important part of doing the pressing movements and more than likely why I am okay at them.

Title: Re: How many here can shoulder press over 225 Naturally?

How much you can shoulder press vs. bench press obviously is heavily dependent on what of the involved muscles are relatively stronger and weaker.  In other words someone with strong delts and tris and a relatively weak chest might shoulder press much closer to what they can bench and vice versa.  To assume someone else has the same ratio as yourself is just ignorant.

why is that hard to believe brian? i max at 460 on the bench but hit 315 for two sets of 6 on the seated overhead presses...(DISCLAIMER: ON SMITH MACHINE AND JUST BELOW PARALELL) and I'm not a 500+lb bencher...I just train my delts to BE big benchers just like my tri's! if you have strong shoulders and tri's then it's not OMFG IMPOSSIBLE TO DO...If your shoulder presses aren't in direct correlation with your benching..it just means your chest does most of the work and your shoulders aren't as involved as others...

totally agreed, a 315 shoulder press for full reps puts you in very elite company. a guy at my gym did 315 for 4 all the way down to his upper chest one time and i asked him what his bench was and he said 5 plates for a good single, so if someone is pressing 315 their bench should be well over 405.

yeeeeeeeeeeeep that is why warm up for this exercise is key! and why some of us dont' go past a certain point to put overdue stress on the cuff and open the shoulder joint up too much...i have a tendon that, when i hit about chin level with heavy weight, will roll over in my shoulder and give off an audible pop..doens't hurt but it makes me uncomfortable so I adjusted my training accordingly.  This is one exercise that if you go too hard and aren't ready for it..you'll royally screw yourself up.  Best to have a training partner or use the rack and/or smith machine in this exercise...dumbbells are kinda outta hte question i think, especially if you're looking to go heavier than most gyms carry in dumbbell weights...but the transition from the pick up to putting it over your head for that first rep is kinda dangerous unless you're used to it, especially without a training partner to help you get the weights up.

going to your chest on shoulder presses is inproper form and puts you shoulders in a vunerable position. about 2 inches above your chest or a little below chin level is considered correct. i can almost incline more then i can bench and have rarely done bench in the last couple years. incline is a much better pec developer, shoulders are my strongest point i would say.

Of course strength ratios among muscle groups are going to be different for everyone, but relatively speaking a trained lifter should have strength that is in proportion to lifts that use the same muscle groups, especially for compound lifts.
CAse in point, refer to onlyme and texasRush's posts and you see that their shoulder press is in proportion to what they ought to be able to do relative to bench press.

Chris. I believe that the ability to handle a ton of weight on military press can be attributed to the structural build of a BB.
I am a lifetime Natty, and I have allways been VERY strong in all my presses. ESP Military.
I have done 315 for 6-8 reps routinely. Front press. I am also 6'1 and 250ish.
I now do more weight, but on the front smith press, for I feel it is safer.
I prefer to focus on side laterals for bigger delt caps, but the mass builder was allways presses.

I would agree that seeing someone pressing over 225 for front military presses is a rare event, but not uncommon.

I have watched people do front presses (seated) who only go down part way.  I have never liked to train with people who do half reps and less just to do the weight I do.  I never say anything cause it makes them feel good let them do it.  I have always done full reps no matter what.  Ever since I started lifting.  I love pausing for a long time on the bottom.  I have done that for many years.  WHen I used to be strong I could 500 on my chest like nothing.  Used ot do it at Muscle Mill Ray Mentzers gym.  I loved training at 4pm to 6pm when the gym was the busiest.  I loved benching and when I saw a new member getting a tour I loved showing off.  I would literally lay the bar on my chest and lay there while they walk by and could here them say to Ray or whoever "is that guy alright does he need help" then I would push the weight up and do 3 or 4 reps.  I used to do the same thing at the Golds in vegas.  But the weight went done.  I would only do it with 405.  Now I am so weak it is down to 315.  I still start at the bottom in the seated front press.  I have the guy lift it off and I start from the bottom and pause every rep.  It is just how I have been doing it forever.  I promise once I get back into the gym and get my strength up again I will video it.  I can talk about my pressing movements but not my pulling.  There is really nothign to brag about there.  My highest dead was okay but nothing spectacular.  I don't do allot of pulldowns or back work anymore.  And I do no legs except for extensions and curls.

I do not feel that one should go more than an inch past the chin while doing front presses.
I feel that you rotate out the cuff, and you are at risk of injury.

The stress put on your shoulders, or the difference between going just below the chin, and to the shoulder, is very similar IMO.  I do not think that the added injury risk one takes while going all the way down is worth it.

O.k. A TINY bit of advice.

If you have an injured shoulder.
#1 - going to a 3-4 rep range on pressing movements is not smart.  Stick to 8-15 and a more moderate weight.
perhaps your joint will heal itself if you stop messing with it.

#2 - no maxing out.... unless you are 17 and in high school.
Then... Max away.

#3 - QUIT FLAT BENCHING.  There are alternatives.  Heavy incline, heavy low incline dbell flies (not presses).

Flat bench is not the only way to build chest mass...

If you bench heavy you will eventually not be able to bench any more because it will be too painful. This applies to over 90% of bodybuilders. If you can do over 400 strict then it is guaranteed you will damage something in the shoulder insertions.

I used to do Olympic lifting when they had 3 lifts. I did 255 as a 198 pounder clean. When I tried 2 Dianabol a day for 6 weeks I could clean and press 225 for 6 reps and did a 270 easy as anything. For some reason I never tried anything heavier. The next best press at my gym was 230 pounds.

You experienced an improvement like that in 6 days? Or did I misread something here?

I was on the UBC weightlifting team and got my Big Block sweater for weightlifting. That was in 1965. Only the guys lifting for Canada were using gear. The rest of us were two scared of getting cancer.  I did the 270 press in 1975 when weighing about 220. I could bench 410 strict and did 8 deep reps with 410 pounds in the squat. I used two bottles of Dianabol 2 pills/day and my strength leaped up. Very few guys could clean that 225 but I toyed with it and did it cold any time. 5 or 6 reps no worries.

You don't really tear anything in the shoulder. What happens is that after 20 or more years of heavy benching your insertions get sore and then you can't bench any more. It has happened to heaps of guys. Most of you guys are too young to experience that. I would recommend doing other exercises and not the bench press. Who here is going to listen to that advice?

I have only benched heavy and I do not warm up. You can ask anyone I have ever trained with.  When I bench I grab a 35 lb weight and bend over a little and do circles to loosen my shoulders.  I do one arm at a time. Now cause I am weaker my first set is 225.  I do that one set then go to 315.  My first set I may do 10 to 15 reps depending on how I feel.  Then after that I don't do more than 6 to 8 reps.  I have never had shoulder problems.  I may get a little tight but no injuries whatsoever.  I think depending on how you lift will dictate your injuries.  I mean you can't all of a sudden start lifting heavy and expect not to get hurt.  I am pretty sure gymnastics and doing allot of negatives has helped me avoid major injuries.  I have alwasy been very limber for my size.  I still haven't seen anyone at 300 lbs. put their leg behind their head.  I used to do it in the movies while I was sitting watching the movie.  One leg at a time though.  It all depends on how youlift and how long.  Negatives will help with everything.

Benching for strength and development are two different things.  When Paula Suzuki gave me some tips to bench for strength, I couldn't master the movement (bringing the bar to the upper part of my stomach below your sternum, extreme back arch and elbows in with a narrower than shoulder width grip).  Bodybuilding benching like advocated by Serge Nubret wrecks your shoulder girdle.  BTW, Paula would kick most everyones ass in bench.

i agree alex, but they seem to think that flat bench is damaging, i however feel it is a very important and all around main movement for chest, followed by inclines
you're right. guys just use that as an excuse for having a weak bench.

flat barbell bench focks my elbows up with tendinitis so I don't do it often.

Yes and no.  I have never heard of lowering the bar that low.  I have never gone below my nipple and my bench seemed okay.  People have shoulder problems when they use too much wieght and too much and not enough shoulder work and upper back work.  When you bench people look at the up stride and don't realize the down stroke is as important to control the weight which means your shoulders and upper back have to be just as strong to hold and control the weight down.  That is why people get shoulder problems.  I have never had any.  ANd 315 might not be that much now but back then it was my warmup and I was fine.  And my chest looked fine (I thought, along with most others) for a guy who benches heavy and weighs 300 pounds.

And sorry for this pic all the time but it really is about the only one I gotwith a shirt off.  Most pics were all lost or misplaced and I really didn't get my pic taken that much from myself

How many wide and close grip pull-ups could you do? I guess you could do dips all day long so I won't even bother to ask.

i've backed off the last year because i'm on a mission to get below 300 this year.  sticking to 12-15 rep-range.  i can still do 225 for 10 reps comfortably though.

At 300 I really didn't do pullups.  I wasn't a puller.  The only back stuff I did do were some deads but mostly rows and DB rows.  I did pulldowns behind the neck too.  And yes I loved dips and easily did sets of 25.  When I was a gymnast I could do pullups but really not many.  I think I did 25 at one time.  We had a guy at our school Marty Wright who was incredible.  He could do 30+ pullups like nothing.  Another guy was Bill Burney (he was a competitive BB) he too was incredibly strong.

You look samoan. Ever think of trying to look like a bodybuilder?

I hate it when people call me samoan.  I like samoans but samoans are big at birth.  I was a fairly skinny kid with wide shoulders.  I had to train to get my size originally.  Now I eat.

I finished second in all 3 shows as a heavyweight.  The heaviest I came in at was 208 and the lightest(last show) was 2-even. The last show I finished second to the eventual AAU Mr. America, Terry Hairston.  Terry's still in the game from what I understand.  He's married to Kim Harris, fbb.

I'm 6'1 and a lifetime natural.  I've thought about competing again in the Masters division, just to see what I would look after training like a bodybuilder for 10-12 years.  But I honestly don't know if I have the desire to do it anymore.  I'm just trying to cut weight so I can be healthier and be around for my kids.  Not trying to check out early on them.  lol

I'm not quite as big now as I was then. Plus, at a heavier bodyweight that exercise was much easier on my elbows. I can press 205 for 4-5 reps (barbell). Another month or two, and I should be able to hit 225 for that same amount of reps.

I tried 225 yesterday, after starting with 135 and 155. I jumped to 205 instead of 185 and got 5 reps with that. Finally, I tried 225 and got three reps.
