Title: Tiger vs Federer
Post by: Tre on January 29, 2007, 09:12:03 AM

Who would win a game of one-on-one basketball?

With the exception of the Agassi matches, I haven't watched men's tennis in years.  The new crop of highly-ranked players lacks personality.  I might recognize Roger Federer if I saw him at the grocery store, but I couldn't even name 5 other guys in the top 15 in the world right now.  I assume Nadal and Roddick?  That's about it.

I don't doubt that Roger Federer is a great player, but the fact that he's rarely - if ever - challenged means that his contemporaries aren't good enough to create compelling match-ups.

In golf, though, Tiger is quite often pushed to the brink and he loses more than he wins.  I mean, when you've got 140 guys gunning for you week in, week out, you're going to lose (as in, "not place first") most of the time.  Maybe if every event was match play (which would get boring after a while), we'd see different results, but part of the fun is the chase.

I'm not trying to hate on Federer, I just don't agree with the claim that he's the greatest athlete - or even tennis player - ever.  Sure, it's not his fault that no one else is good enough to challenge him, but the sport needs that in order to be entertaining.

This is basketball we're talking about here so you gotta take into consideration Tiger's blackness.  :D

I'm not sure about Tiger but Federer plays a bit of basketball so I'll take a guess and say Feds. As to who is the better athlete, I give the slight nod to Federer. Federer isn't getting pushed in his matches because he is that damn good. In the men's final the other night, Gonzalez played awesome and would have wiped the floor with any other player at the moment, but he couldn't even take a set of Federer, that's how good Federer is. Along with Jordan, Chamberlain, Gretsky, Lemieux and Woods, I think Federer is the best pro sports athlete of the last 30-40 years.

SERGIO!!!!

Yup, clearly more athletic. Being a great golfer doesn't require being a good athlete, which i think is required of tennis. Tiger's more athletic and svelte than many golfers, even so a top tennis player's far more used to being athletic, has to be.

As far as Federer not being pushed, that doesn't have much to do with it.

The mvp pf the nba is white, and has been white for years. I have also noticed a lot of the best players in college ball are white as well. Obv african men outnumber whites in basketball, but I have noticed more and more prolific white players in college latley.

I think the African domination of the nba has less to do with more talent and more to do with more popularity with the black youth of America. I went to a large public highschool and basketball was def less popular with the white athletes then black ones. Although I grew up In boston where youth hockey/baseball is king.

Most of the black athletes stayed away from hockey and gravitated towards football or basketball. I think if more had played hockey there would be more black hockey players and vice cersa. A great athlete is a great athlete no matter the color imo. The whole "africans" are more athletic thing is a crock ,imo. Same goes for all races.

There's a correlation with ghettos and sports proliferation I think.

The mentality from the ghetto is not to become a doctor generally.

Here in England, sports stars are generally not from wealthy backgrounds (rugby union is an exception).

I could be wrong however...

There is a correlation. Look how many young African men look up to guys like 50 cent. Not many look up to guys like Obama,Crosby Or Colin Powell.

The same goes for any race in America/England. Main stream media has a large effect on kids, just a fact.
