this is a question that has puzzled me for a long time, it's not just women but men too but you listen to average looking women talk and they all think they can land a good looking successful rich guy, what makes them think that, more than likely that dude is looking for an unbelievable looking woman and vice versa.

Probably because they can. Looks aren't everything...and extremely good looking people are acutely aware of that.
They have talents, abilities, characteristics and needs that go way beyond their looks that are often not even recognized, let alone appreciated. When someone meets your core needs or is able to appreciate you for all you bring to the table, beyond your looks, if you have any sense at all, you're not going to toss that aside in pursuit of something so superficial as looks.
There are plenty of couples where one is not considered as attractive as the other. I'm not going to name any famous ones right now 'cause I don't want to offend anyone, ...but Hollywood is full of them.
PS - There was also the Prince of Wales and Wallace Simpson. I'd definately say she was less than average.

Also, what some people forget, is that not all men want an SO/wife who is gorgeous because they don't want to be "worried" all the time. They prefer the down-to-earth, less attractive woman who's going to love them, take care of the kids & home, etc... and won't have grandiose ideers about herself. Same goes for some women. ;)
Besides, have you ever seen two gorgeous people together? :-X

I am ugly as sin....but I have dated nice looking women.Maybe not supermodels but certainly not ugly.(like me)Once they get past the whole knife to their throat thing,they actually have a nice time.

Yep all the time, ...especially on Oscar night. Then at the end of the night, after all the cameras have stopped flashing, she goes home to her plain under the radar boyfriend, ...and so does he. ;D

Looks are indeed not everything. I know an average looking woman, and she literally can make heads turn as she walks by. She's got that attitude, or whatever you might call that in English. X-factor?

that's because society judges a woman on what she looks like first and foremost and a man on how much money he makes, that's just the truth.

I think some people are just overly confident. Lets face it....looks do matter. You certainly do not want to be hooked up with someone you do not find attractive. Thats why we all hit the gym and take care of ourselves. I think some people look in the mirror and assume they are a twelve out of ten in the looks range, but in reality they are not. How many times has everyone on this board been hit on a bar or club by someone that they found very unattractive? I'm sure its happened to everyone here.

Wealthy, unattractive men often have no problems approaching beautiful women. Aside from the obvious buying power money has, very often the kind of man who amasses great wealth has some kind of never give up, inner drive, determination, stubbornness, etc... which translates into other areas. Like getting what you want as far as people go.
If you look at the broke, works as a Walmart greeter guy, chances are his vibes will reflect his situation... not very confident, probably pedantic and set in his ways, fatalistic, etc... people aren't usually attracted to that. Old, broke poets and painters sometimes do okay with young women for awhile because of the whole "romantic" image they have.

Among the respondents, nearly three-quarters of the women surveyed (about 150) said they’d had affairs, compared to about 50% of the men. While the male numbers are in keeping with findings for the broader American population, the figure for women is almost twice as high as the national average, according to sex researchers. (More than half of all the men and women surveyed had been divorced at least once.)
Fully 63% of rich men said wealth gave them “better sex,” which they defined as having more-frequent sex with more partners. That compares to 88% of women who said more money gave them better sex, which they defined as “higher quality” sex.
“This tells us that the women as a whole receive more sexual benefits from wealth than men,” says Ms. Grove.
The women in the survey were almost twice as likely than their male counterparts to have “more adventurous and exotic” sex lives than they did before they were wealthy. They were also more than twice as likely than men to be members of the “mile high club,” meaning they’ve had sex on an airplane. Fully 72% of the female respondents said they were mile-high-club members, compared to 33% of the men. (Both numbers are larger than the norms even for the wealthy for a simple reason: All the survey respondents owned jets or shares in jets.)

“We’re not talking about the woman who’s home with two kids and who’s dependent on her husband,” Mr. Kerner says. “Those women are more likely to worry about the consequences of having other relationships.”
He added that especially for women, sex is closely linked to self-esteem. And since wealth usually brings greater self-esteem, it can improve a woman’s sex life.
“For the minute percentage of women who are that wealthy, this wealth can be a big ego booster and allow them to feel very comfortable and relaxed about sex,” he says. “They have a strong sense of identity and they know they don’t have to be inhibited about communicating their needs. It’s about the confidence and power and opportunity that comes with having a lot of wealth.”

Our experiences color our view of the world. Maybe theres lots of Rich gals somewhere who stay with
"Big abusive Bums" by choice. But it's a whole lot easier for THEM to leave, than some poorer girl with not many options. Beat the hell out of them to get a girl out of your league to hang around AND Love you?

Courthouse. I used to think the same thing. That maybe my views are skewered. But when 4 women you work with have 20- something sons, who are bums, no jobs, and the girls in their lives take care of them. Or just helping people, some of the most attractive, intelligent (attorneys, med. school, docs, professional) women that I met thru my job are either with bums, or thugs. They take care of these dudes, but at the same time are pissed off of their situation. And when you are face to face with and try and be emphathic to these women with their situation, one can't help to be frustrated at the same ol song and dance routine. I've been hit on by these women, but knowing that even though I match up to these women (mentally, physically, etc.) I have to watch myself---'cause I know their situations, and where it will end up (only sex---but for her the same situation as before). And the energy and vibe, they give off!!! Dee, you just don't know!!!!
I listened to Michael Baisden one day (author of Maintenance Man, and other titles) and he said that women (black women he was speaking about) today are angry, and don't have tha glow, of GOOD LUVIN' (not sex), unlike women back in the 70's all had that all natty glow, cause they were getting some good luvin (mind body and soul)
I trace this back to above, when your with a bum, all you do is focus on the small amout of positives (and supposed potential), but the negatives outweigh the positives.

No, I ain't in to bashing women. Men who bash women do so because (generally) that can't get what they want from them and are sexually frustrated because of that.

I am an average looking guy shorter than most (5'6") and I bodybuild....Now when I worked normal sales/marketing jobs I wouldn't pick up that many attractive women...But, during the years I was a personal trainer I had no trouble what-so-ever picking up attractive women every weekend and during the week the minute I would tell them I was a personal trainer....I need a woman's point of view on why this made an obvious difference with women????
