Title: GETBIGGERS WITH DOGS (SERIOUS FOOD RECALL) MY DOG GOT SICK!
Post by: chainsaw on March 21, 2007, 04:45:24 AM

Here you can get a list of all the recalled food.  Science diet and Iams, 2 of the best brands are among them (OVER 100 brands).  My 1 dog stopped eating a week ago and was throwing up, luckily I found this out about the recall.  He's eating rice and ground beef until They fix this, and he's been better.

Hope this helps.

From that link:

Quote

Becker says that despite the recall, most of the foods on the shelf, regardless of price, are typically safe for pets' consumption.

"With the sheer number of pets being fed commercial pet food, this is a very small problem so far," he says.

Given the attachment people have to their pets and the number of rifles in the US, Mr. Becker may not be long for this world with comments like that.

Science Death and Iams are in the lower half of the crap in a bag rankings!  :-X

Find a food with preferably 4 out of 4, or min 3 out of 4, of the first ingredients are MEAT based.

If I have to recommend a *hurl* kibble, I go with the "Chicken Soup for the Pet lovers Soul" line.

Or better yet, go to your butchers or grocery meat department and feed them some REAL food like a carnivore is designed to eat.

I've often wondered about this.

Everyday, our dog gets meat of some kind (real meat, not processed shit) and dry food.  Does a dog need carbs too?  As carnivores, they'd survive on a protein/fat diet, but would they do as well?

Dont feed a dog too much real beef.  Many dogs can develop skin problems similar to mange.

Most dog foods that are sold in supermarkets are crap. If the first list in the ingredients is meat- by -products don't buy it. Meat- by- products mean everything on the cow except meat. It could be anything found on the slaughterhouse floor. It is crap and you wouldn't want that shit in your house. It is not FDA approved.

Only buy dogfood or catfood that list FDA approved meat as its first ingredient.

They do BETTER on a CARNIVORE diet.  Dogs don't digest and utilize grains.

He hates it cause he knows it sucks and is not for a carnivore.

huh?     a dog needs a variety and bones, and beef bones are usually too hard to be consumed so other animals need to be fed along with offals.   But developing mange?  I could see skin problems if someone just fed beef muscle and no bones or offals.

you have to know what the parents of the dog were eatin, you have to give your dog she same food. hope this helps.

Are you for real?   :-\     No you don't have to feed the same thing.  You can even take a pup off of crap-in-a-bag and feed him real food.

Flower, do you recommend the "Chicken Soup" line over "Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance" Chicken and Brown Rice?
Yes, I believe his line only has 2 of the first four as meat.

This is true, both cat & dog food. Science, Iams, Eukanuba etc. are the best of the mid-level brands, which isn't known to some who buy it or they're unwilling to pay a little more for lesser known alternatives. The better ones aren't that much more money IMO, especially if bought in bulk & are found at pet stores. Doesn't mean the better brands aren't suceptible to future problems like this, but for now they seem ok.

Too late, my pet!

Ya, the vet said to keep the meat but decrease (but not eliminate) the dry food (which is a good brand), since the dog has grown... shall we say, "plump."

And no, he does not resemble his owner.

Science Death, Eukapuka and Iams are NOT the best of mid-level.   But you are right, you could spend a little more on a *hurl* better quaility crap-in-a-bag, or you could spend the same or even less on REAL dog food and have a healthier dog (less vet bills), smaller poops, and the dog would enjoy eating it.

Dry vs. wet is very debatable; you could probably use a reduced version of dry just as well as using meat.

raw meats and kibbles digest at different rates.  By mixing them you could be asking for digestive problems.    Why not do the right thing and go raw dog.

Dry is just fine given the relative few who are going to/can afford to use real food. Anything beyond that is mere opinion and should be framed as such.

          :D

It's a mutt, and he's got a gut like a billy goat.  Honestly, I've never witnessed any digestive issues (except when the vet gave him a cortisone shot for a hot spot which caused panceatitis and nearly killed him - vets are brilliant!).

I reason it thusly: He's not in the wild, so he isn't grazing all day.  If I limit his diet to one meat per day, maybe with a bone, it might not meet his needs long term.  His meats vary - kangaroo, beef mince, steak, beef marrow bone, T-bone [bone], chicken, lamb bones - but always raw.  Even so, I figured "kibbles" would round out what an otherwise limited diet would lack.  If you've got bright ideas on "raw dog" nutrition that provide a well rounded diet, I'm all ears and cost isn't a concern.

Shit, now I sound like a dog nut.

BTW Flower, what are your views on collars and leashes?  ;)

Yup; enough of the granola woodstock survivors correcting us on the "exact" food that must be used.

I can not take credit for the origin and evolution of dogs.

They are what they are.    Why does it bother you that a carnivore is best able to thrive on a carnivore's diet?   Can they survive on a diet that includes grains and other fillers, well obviously yes.

Try not to take it personally that I am pointing out facts and trying to show people there is another (better) way to feed.

     :)

and to the person who commented on by-products:  by-products are not floor sweepings, etc. They are the offals (organ meats) etc and are necessary in a canine diet.  So seeing by-products is not necessarily a bad thing.  Again you should look at the first 4 ingrediants and try and find a food that they are meat based.   ie: Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul line.

meat, bones, offals.  there ya go.  Feed like a "prey model"  more meat and bones, and smaller amounts of organs (offals).   It is not rocket science.    But meat AND bones are important, an all meat diet will not provide a good calcium/phosphorus ratio.

Any pet food bought in a grocery store is garbage!  Iams,Science Diet,Eukanuba are also garbage!  Most people assume that those three bands are good because vets sale them.  Well the vets get incentives from those companys to push their brands.  Any food that has meat by-products  should be avoided.  Good brands are Flint River Ranch,Wellness,Chicken Soup For the Pet Lovers Soul and there are many more.  These companys use human grade ingrediants not scraps and waste like the grocery store brands.  The high quality brands don't even cost that much more per bag and actually comes out to be cheaper than the garbage.  The good stuff comes out to be cheaper because a dog will get full on a smaller amount due to the quality ingrediants.  When eating the garbage they need more becuase it's like eating empty calories.

Good for you!   Check out that link I provided for more info and feeding ideas.

Organs are a bit rich, so I wouldn't add a lot in the diet at a time.  And add foods in slowly, one at time so you will know if a particular food doesn't agree with him.

He's picky with seafood - he says it smells weird - but the rest looks good (what, no kangaroo?).  I'll keep the dry food in every other day to start and go from there... a little canine carb cycle early on.

Cheers  :)

we feed our american pit bull terrier a raw diet from http://www.naturesvariety.com/ .  He loves the food and since we put him on the real raw food as opposed to just the kibble with raw enzymes, his digestive problems have cleared up and he has an easier time with his bad back legs and joint issues.  He's off previcox and doing great.  His coat is brighter and softer than ever and genuinely seems like a healthier dog.  Spend the money and your dog will love you for it.

Double their lifespan??  i doubt it, my parents lab has been on purina kibble for her entire life and she is 16.5 years old and going strong.  She's also been on rimadyl, previcox  or duramax at some point or another and is doing just fine.  She's living the full life expectancy of the breed.  Food CAN be a major factor in a dogs life, but breeding is just as big.  If you get a purebred dog for less than 400 dollars, chances are it will have a multitude of problems, if you're paying over a grand, chances are it WON'T have a ton of problems.  It comes down to genetics and breeding standards just as much as the food they eat.  My parents go to a renowned vet who recommends purina and says  it all comes down to the individual dog.  Myself personally, i will keep my dog on the raw stuff because he responds to it so well, but if he were fine on kibble, i'd keep him on it just the same.

I've heard that before from people whose dogs are on Rimadyl, however, I've also heard it's hard on the liver.   Did you ever consider glucosamine/chondroitin?

We tryed that but it didn't do anything for her. Ar first we had her on Cortaphen but she reacted mildly on that so we switched to Rimadyl. She doing better then on the other two medicine and liver problems are no concern to us because this year she's going to be 15 years old. We go for quality over quantity in life.. ;)

Yup- I would use Rimadyl as a last resort, or in EM's case an older dog.

Princess I am glad Scout likes that Chicken Soup.   :D

Looks like menu foods was covering up alot more than previous thought. while the fda and menu foods were blaming gluten a wheat product (which does not contribute to kidney failure) investigators from the state agriculture department uncovered rat poision. That CEO of menu foods needs to be fired for his earlier comments on downplaying the severity of 60 million recalls, companies need to be held accountable for their actions.

chainsaw, even though your dog is better, you might want to call your vet. Renal failure may be possible in the future.   I hope he's fine.   :(

Rat Poison to Blame for Pet Food Contamination
Sources Tell ABC News Rat Poison Has Been Found in the Contaminated Pet Food That Has Killed Scores of Animals
By DAVID KERLEY

March 23, 2007 — - ABC News has learned that investigators have determined that a rodent-killing chemical is the toxin in the tainted pet food that has killed several animals.

A source close to the investigation tells ABC News that the rodenticide, which the source says is illegal to use in the United States, was on wheat that was imported from China and used by Menu Foods in nearly 100 brands of dog and cat food.

Watch "World News" for full details on the extent of the poisoning.

A news conference is scheduled for this afternoon by experts in Albany, N.Y., where scientists at the state's food laboratory made the discovery a week after a massive recall of 60 million cans and pouches was issued.

The chemical is called aminopterin.

What investigators can't say so far is whether this is the only contaminant, if it is in all of the recalled food, or if it's in enough quantity in to sicken more animals.

There is some good news according to the source. Knowing the chemical should aid veterinarians who are treating animals that have been sickened by the pet food.

Aminopterin is used in the United States in, of all things, a cancer drug, according to the source.

For a week, investigators have been looking for a cause behind the 15 confirmed pet food deaths tied to contaminated pet food. Many animal doctors, including those at New York's Animal Medical Center, suspect there will be a much larger rash of cases after they learned about an additional 200 reported cases of kidney failure in animals.

Doctors at the hospital, which is considered the Mayo Clinic of veterinary medicine, say they noticed the kidney failure while studying sick animals from last Friday to Monday, and traced the cases back to the 60 million cans and pouches of recalled food from Menu Food.

"I was shocked and surprised -- acute kidney failure is not a common problem," veterinarian Cathy Langston told ABC News. "I've already heard about 200 cases, and so I bet that there are probably going to be thousands."

So far, the government and the pet food maker, which sells food under 91 brand names, have confirmed 15 deaths. But the investigation to locate the toxic contaminant that caused the kidney failure in animals had not pointed to a cause until today.

"This is very much like finding a needle in a haystack," Don Smith of the Cornell Veterinary School said earlier this week. "We're going to keep working at this until we find the cause."

Investigators had already begun looking at the possibility that a pesticide or chemical may have been on the wheat used to produce the Menu Foods dog and cat food.

The Food and Drug Administration, which was notified of the tainted food one day before the recall, said it's frustrated and realizes the growing crisis is an emotional one.

"This is tragic," said Stephen Sundolf of the FDA's Veterinary Medicine group. "It is certainly uncommon. We expect pet food to be safe."

And it's a crisis, if the New York hospital is right, that may not end for weeks.

"I'm worried that there are more deaths to come from chronic renal failure over the next several months," Langston said. "It's not over."

Dont feed a dog too much real beef.  Many dogs can develop skin problems similar to mange.

then they would be a "mange mutt"
