Title: Cooking 2 Chickens for Simon
Post by: ~flower~ on April 01, 2007, 10:46:26 AM
We have gotten down to the last of the chicken I made for Simon the Ferret (and Tino too, but this is all Simon is eating now).  Just hacked up and ground 2 whole chickens (bones too) and a carton of livers, added some filtered water to a 10 (?) quart pot and cooking it up.  Then I have to fine blend it (they don't like it lumpy!) and freeze into containers.  In the morning he gets it with some fish oil in it.  And I mix some chicken baby food in too.  They like the taste of that, but I think it at first was because it wasn't as lumpy so they get less baby food mixed in.

Simon has been on this for the past 2 weeks and has put back some weight and is doing much better.  2 weeks ago I was ready to have him put to sleep.  :( Since then it is like he has reversed aged a few years!   :)

Only 2 people have known what was going on (thanks guys!  :-* ) which has not been a good time.  I also help Simon express his bladder twice a day and that too has helped him immensely overall.  He's 9 years old, and neither him or Tino have had any of the common ferret diseases that usually make a ferret lifespan only 5-7 years, so I consider us lucky.   I credit this in part to them haven't been vaccinated in 7 years where most people vaccinate them for distemper every year and sometimes rabies yearly also.   >:( Along with putting flea crap and now heartworm meds are being pushed too.  Meanwhile ferret diseases are considered "normal"  I say to hell with that!   >:(    I don't know how long this "upswing" will last with Simon, it has been up and down for a year now but this latest spell has been the worst yet, but I intend to do what I can for him.

If anyone wants to joke or make fun of what I am doing it will be deleted off this board.  You can take it to the X if you feel the need.

My 2 ferrets are the 2 male relationships I have had the longest, so they will get whatever it takes for their quality of life.

            :D

I second it...any bad or negative comments will be deleted.

I am glad to hear he's still moving forward.  I can barely imagine the last year or so has been a day to day struggle.

As long as they are happy....& sustain a good quality of life....you couldn't be a better pet owner.

Flower, what's the S.U.D?

I believe it is ferret hospice here now.  :(  Last week it was like he was 2 years younger and now it is like we didn't even have that good spurt.  He has gone backwards so fast this time. I still help express his bladder.  He will now only lick a little food and then I feed him with a syringe.  He tolerates that, but he is starting to fight me after a little bit by trying to keep his mouth clamped shut.  He would never bite, so that is why I think I am managing to get in him what I do.  If he doesn't bounce back in the next day or so and starts being more enthusiastic about eating, or starts to really fight me when I try and feed him, then...... it will be time.   It's probably time now, I just don't think that I am ready yet.     :'(
