Title: how can i Up my protein intake??? serious question
Post by: Petrucci on May 31, 2007, 06:16:32 AM
it sounds a stupid question...but let me explain....

 - i cant eat solid foods (unless its a sammich or thing like that) during almost all day, when im at work...So that leaves me only the morning, the lunch time in the middle of the day and the last meal of the day to eat solid meals...

 - i eat at my work at lunch time (there is a restaurant there for the employees)the food is free but you have limitations on the meat you can eat!!!! so i mean, i cant eat like 5 pieces of chicken....so my protein intake in that meal is very limited...

 - i could live by suplements, but here in brazil they are F*cking expensive!!!! its simply impossible to take like 100 grams or more of protein in shakes for me, simply because i dont have the money to buy all of this...Im trying to exchange to Albumin instead of Whey protein, because its a lot more cheap, but i dont know if the results are the same, and even like that i will spend a very good $$ on it. So im restricted to more or less 40 to 60 grams of protein per day in suplements (that more or less what i can spend)

Do you guys have any idea of what can i do?? i cant exagerate on carbs because i grow, but i also get fat very quick...so restricting my carbs i cant grow with my protein intake so low (and analizing my diet, it was always low...)And now i want to try some new approach...

Can anyone give me a hand on this????  :'(

thanks in advance!!!

When i first started training at 13-14yrs old.. My mom couldnt afford protien powders as well.   ( Im not saying this is your situation)

I was allowed to buy a big box of nonfat milk powder....( about the size of a cereal box)    This is a dehydrated milk powder it had 12g of protien per spoonful.       It was really cheap and easy to find in grocery stores.

Add 2-3 scoops in a mixer cup w/some ovaltine or chocolate powder.  When your ready, just fill with water and BOOOOM. 8)

Could you bring a small container of cottage cheese to work with you???  It all adds up and you save a ton of money by not buying supplements.

How about egg whites? 1 large egg white has about 3.5 grams of protein.
How about fat free milk?  8 oz of fat free milk has 8g protein and 12g carbs.  You might have to drink a lot, but it is like an MRP in that it is already a meal with carbs.
Or, what about canned tuna?  When i first started bodybuilding I used to eat a lot of tuna.  When I was at work I would sneak into the bathroom and eat a can of tuna and a banana (every 2-2.5 hours) just to get my meal in on time.  I used to time it so that (in an 8 hour shift) I would eat right before going in (hour 0), at hour 2.5 (work time), at hour 5 (usually lunch/break), and finally at hour 7 (work time).  This way I only had to eat two meals DURING work time and still got to eat every 2-2.5 hours.

Hope this helps.

you just have to prepack meals, i usualy cook up chicken breast and ground beef twice a week, i will have my breakfeast, eggs and cottage cheese then about 2.5-3 hrs later have tuna, then 3 hrs later have chicken and brocolli, then have a protein powder before the gym on my way home, another after, and then ground beef for dinner, and eggs before bed

Another economical way to get more protein would be to buy cans of evaporated milk. A 12-oz. can has 25 grams of protein and 300-500 calories (depending on the fat content).

Guzzling four of those would give you an extra 100 grams of protein per day.

first, thanks for the replies guys

 - I already eat 5-6 eggs white (1 or 2 whole eggs) on the morning, with some carbs (oatmeal for instance) for my first meal of the day
 - good advice on the free fat milk (specially in powder). I will look for it. Probably even having less protein, its a lot more cheaper then Whey protein powders
 - As i mentioned, im switching my shakes to Albumin for some time, because it is more than 2 times more cheaper then Whey here. and im trying to get more or less 40 to 60 grams per day just on this (this based on how much i can spend on this at the moment)
 - i already eat some cottage cheese with a lunch when im at work. Its quick to eat so thats why i use it, but its too little to make too much of a difference. I will look for the prices and see if its better for me to bring a small 'container' with the cottage, wich would be a great choice also
 - i already gave a tought on prepack meals, but as i said, at my work its really difficult to get some time (even if it is 5 minutes...)specially because i have to stay at my office all the time. Sometimes even to drink a shake i take 10 minutes because i have to stop everytime to do something... :-\ . And off course, there is the thing about every 'monster' 130lbs geek looking at you if you start to eat food in front of them in the middle of the day, LOL
 - About the tuna fish, once again...Giving an example (i already did this math): if i take all the protein that a 900gr Whey Powder has, and buy the equivalent on tuna fish cans, the tuna would be more expensive!!!! LOL. Yeah, here things are really difficult, but i will look to buy in more quantities, maybe i can have a discount and that way i will save some $$

but once again, thanks for the tips!!! i will try it for sure!

ps: on a side note, i just can wish that beer was a good source of protein  ;D
