Title: Pick-up lines

Which Pickup Lines Work Best?
AOL/LLC
''Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?'' Guys, you may think this witty and endearing pickup line is sure to make women just fall head over heels for you. Guess again.

Pickup lines typically have the opposite effect, and a team of psychologists from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland has figured out why: Most women don't like them, reports The Guardian. What the researchers did find is that some pickup lines might work depending on the woman's personality.

By assembling 40 common pickup lines culled from books, films and Web sites, the team asked 266 women and 115 men to rate each of them on how a woman would most likely react upon hearing them.

They found that the pickup lines could be grouped into four categories, depending on the impression the man was trying to give:

1. Cultured: "It's at moments like these when I am reminded of Lord Byron's poetry."

2. Meaningless compliment: "Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?"

3. Sexual reference: "I may not be Fred Flintstone, but I bet I can make your bed rock."

4. Humorous: "Hi! How do you like me so far?"

They found that women rated the pickup lines based on their own personalities. For example, extraverted women liked humorous pickup lines, while tough-minded women found "nice guy" pickup lines a turnoff.

"The interesting difference appeared when we compared the sexes," Peter Caryl, a psychologist on the study, told The Guardian. "Despite being deeply unpopular with women, men are unreasonably optimistic about how well their sexually explicit lines will go down," he said.

Caryl advises men to make a quick assessment of a woman's personality and then choose a pickup line that fits her type. And when men do let loose with a line, women tend to pigeonhole them into one of four personality types:

-- Friendly and considerate nice guy

-- Industrious and enterprising provider

-- Confident and strong leader

-- Fickle and conceited bad mate

"I can't imagine anyone being turned on by this 'bad mate' kind of guy, but some women seem to be less put off than others. If you look like George Clooney, you may be able to get away with a whole range of things," Caryl told The Guardian.

The takeaway: Men consistently think that a sexually explicit pickup line will win a woman's heart; in fact, the only lines that really work are those that suggest the man is a nice guy or fun to be with -- and even these won't work on all women.

The study findings were published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.

'If you look like George Clooney, you may be able to get away with a whole range of things," Caryl told The Guardian.

...I posted only recently, about meeting Mel Gibson in the 1980s (long before they invented Brad Pitt or George Clooney...

It was one of the funniest nights ever (obviously he was happily married at the time and just out on the town and having a laugh, I knew that, all my friends knew that and so did his bodyguards).  When he finally came over to me, after making silly eyes at me for maybe 3 hours, he said "Did anyone ever tell you you look like Nana Mouskori?"  I took my specs off and attempted to hit him with them.  Everyone in the entire place fell about laughing...

& I can't believe (I can't!!!) that you read the Guardian.
It's silly season
God only knows what will they think of to write about next...

massive sense of humour, that's what works for me

What is the Guardian?

wtf did you google then?  how did you find this news tidbit?

There are maybe 10 daily newspapers in the UK:  The Times, owned by Murdoch, The Telegraph and one other I can't remember.  The Daily Telegraph supports the Conservative Party & used to be owned by Conrad Black.  I cannot keep up.

Then there's the tabloids:  The Sun, the Mail, the Mirror (all of which are unreadable).  Then there's the Independent and there's the Guardian.  The Guardian is for lefty socialist teachers and care workers...

Nowadays, I get my news on the internet, just like you.  The American press is even scarier than here in the UK.  Read the Al-Jazzera sometimes...  (I wonder what they have to say about pick-up lines !!!

I am an extrovert so as long as I felt a connection I could just walk over and talk to some one I liked.
I never used any pick up lines but I would try and be witty or charming , I found that worked....... well most times.

STella
Here is a pick up line I read recently...........
"You remind me of a spanner, because when I see you my nuts tighten"
So?? would it work  :)

I agree, I honestly cant say Ive ever seen a "Pick up Line" work.  Not unless there was allready such thick obvious sexual attraction that it was clearly a done deal anyway.

Women like to talk. If you can get them talking about fun childish stuff, and laughing, and telling you stuff that they really like - they will want more of you.

Remember that stuff she said she likes, and surprise her w/ it on a date. No it dont need be spendy.

Not unless I meet you when taking my bike in to get done, and certainly not until you fix it and then say "it's on the house" and go get a shower.

I must admit I love dirty hard working hands though and I adore muddy knees...

I'm wondering whether it's not what you say, but the way you look at me when you say it?

Pick up lines probably worked in the late 60s early 70s but the new millennia women need a bit more substance to get their juices flowing.

once I said a really stupid line to a girl and it worked. I was walking in a mall (very young and cocky) and this hot girl and I made Eye contact as she was walking toward me and she smiled and I said "You know your going the wrong way if you want to be with me don't you..." She giggled and I laughed and we started walking together and talking and ended up going out. Corney sometimes workes... ;D

It's all in the Right kind of eye contact. Then, Total Self-confidence and Boyish charm to laugh at yourself...
Done correctly.... You can push it pretty far sometimes. Her giving you a "LOOK" you know is a invite...

Yep. It's also the attitude that comes with it as well. I've had guys say things to me that made me smile,
whereas if someone else had said the exact same thing, ...it would have made me want to vomit.

A man can come across as playful, ...or a repulsive wretch, ...or witty, ...or a straight up loser,
all with the exact same line. A guy's personality plays an awful lot into how a line is received also.

About a month ago I had a guy say "c'mere you...i wanna give ya a little squeeze where the squeezins good".  ;)
It made me smile. Had I been face to face with him, I might've presented him with something he could've squeezed. I guarantee you that there are those who could've said the exact same thing and it would've made my skin crawl.

Married to the right person is desirable. Being married for the sake of being married isn't.
I'd rather be single than married for married's sake.

The best pick up line is the one that you never have to use. If you workout and train real hard, you'll stand out and look great and you'll be more confidant then the average person that doesn't train. Let them come to you. From my experiences in bars and clubs when I was younger, it was the muscular guys (not necessarily the biggest) that took care of themselves that had the women flocking around them.

It reminded me of my husband and a fraternity bro of his that tell a story of when they were in college.  I can't remember which of them did it, but there was a girl at the bar and instead of sending the customary drink to her they sent her a bag of chips ;D

Yeah....tell me about it.

An old Marine buddy of mine used to be the best with pick up lines.

Most girls when they would hear the lines (just in conversation) would say it never would work with them....

but he had a high success rate...probably the highest I've ever seen first hand.

Not sure why girls in the bars/clubs would go along with it unless the alchohol made their normal good judgment go away
