Johnny Jackson was the coolest to chill and talk to, very easy to talk to.

Dennis Wolf, was in a hurry for a shoot, so he didn't seem interested...

Jay Cutler, Ronnie Coleman, Hide, Armin Schulz, Silvio Samuel....a couple others I'm sure I'm forgetting....

Men --- Art Atwood, Jay Cutler several times, Bill Wilmore several times, Evan Centopani several times, Jose Raymond (has he finally accepted his pro card?), Dexter Jackson, Kai Greene, Marcus Haley, a few others who I am forgetting.  I know Greg Rando pretty well, as he's from my area.

Women --- Carla Salotti (my trainer), Colette Nelson, Vicki Nixon, Lynn Conkwright (my former coach), Debbie Bramwell, Annie Riveccio, and others who I can't remember.  Also many figure and fitness pros, too many to name.

Jay's was very nice about pics, etc. and Evan C. is one of the sweetest guys I have ever met.  Bill Wilmore's a cool dude, we went out drinking one night with him and had a good time.

Kai Greene was funny and grunted a lot when I was talking to him.  He also squeezed me REALLY tight when we took a photo together.   ;D

Kovacs looks like an absolute giant. I mean his fist looks as big as your head. Might not have had the most attractive physique, but Kovacs had to be one of the biggest bodybuilders ever. I heard he even got up to 400lbs at times.

I would have to agree that is one big dude.I have not heard of that pro up until now.The photo of Jay that would be the first time that I have seen Jay in normal clothes.Like other times when I have seen Jay in his trunks or his gym gear.Which country is Greg Kovacs from?

Born in New York and lives in Canada. Basically he is the biggest pro ever, the only down side is that he never looked that good at competition condition, paticularly in his last few years competing. He did the Arnold in '04 and '05 and came in at around 330lbs. Unfortunately he looked like, well you will see...

I see Dorian Yates nearly every day - he came into the gym for a brief moment when I was training yesterday with loads of christmas shopping and wrapping paper for his little girl - it was kinda surreal when you consider he used to weigh 300lbs and was formerly the best bodybuilder on the planet.

I know it's not the V meso ::)

Impressed by what?

Their size?  A few of them were impressive size wise, a couple that stand out are Armin Schultz, and Ed Van Amsterdam(really cool guy, super friendly), some of the others, not so impressive.

Their condition? Some were in really good shape, others fairly well into "offseason" ;)

Their personalities? I never got to "hang out" as in several hours, only a few minutes here and there. A few have been very friendly and talkative, others like Dennis Wolf, not so much, he seemed to be in a big hurry.

Johnnie Jackson hung out a talked while he was there, Ed VanAmsterdam was fuckin hilarious and having a real good time, Hide is always polite/cordial, Silvio was friendly and easily approachable,  James "flex" Lewis was cool when he was there.

For the most part these guys are friendly/ approachable, personality-wise.....varies.

Does that quench your nagging desire to wank to pros, meso_z? :-*
Any one particular you're wondering about?

I met Cathy LeFrancouis. Was very nice. Adela Carcia...totally nasty and a bitch. Jay Cutler when he was guestposing at a friends competition...he wasn't very talkative but seemed nice enough.
Both of these women have been in the gym and both were very nice, Cathy particularly was very outgoing.

The first show I ever attended   was the 91 North American  in Redondo Bch.....I met Shawn Ray and Diana Dennis ...they were the first i ever met  and I have been a big fan of both ever since.   Shawn was a bit ego-istic back then   but hey   he was the No.3 best pro in the world.....Lady Di  was  such a true pro back then....since I live in LA   I had a good frienship with Denise Rutkowski  until the drama life hit her...I 've met a number of pros   since i also compete...many have offered me help with dieting others just gave loads of encouragement   like Matterazzo and Shan cheering for me at the 93 Orange County and 2005 Orange respectively...talk about a dram come true!!!

i have met Dorian, Ronnie, Kevin Levrone, Chris Cormier, Flex, Dennis James, Lee, Milos, Markus,Titus, Shawn, DJ Dowadoo or however it's spelled, Melvin, Art Atwood, and numerous others.  The only guy i have ever met that was a downright dick was Lou Ferrigno.  What an ass.  I need $20 bucks if you want a picture with me.  I live close to vegas and have gone down to the O every year since 2000.  If anyone goes down for the O you need to go to the meet the olympians on the thursday before the show.

Went to the Olympia last year. meet the Olympians the night before was great. Got to meet and say a few words to all of the competitors except Jay and Ronnie. they had a 1-2 hour line which is too much of my time to just say hi and take a pic. i was going to see them on stage the next day anyway. Most of the pro's were quite relaxed. They were mostly freindly and had plenty of time too answer questions and joke around. Vince Taylor told me all about his prep and injury problems. Gustavo told me he was really tired and wanted to get out of there soon. he looked like he was going to fall asleep but kept smiling and mugging around with people for photos.
I spoke to some retired and non-qualified pros at the competiton and at the expo. Some of the guys really do look just "out of there" up close. Wolfe's arms loooked incredible, bigger and harder than anyone else in the competition.Quincy taylor looks like a real life giant. ed van Amsredam was funny. he asked me if I was in the IRA when i told him I was Irish.

Now, as an adult, I work with a lot of these guys doing web work, publicity, etc. . . . But I think that it's really the people that you meet when you're young and just starting to train that leave the biggest impression on you.

In 1981 I met my first two pro bodybuilders.  Before that I had only seen these guys in the magazines.  I was so young and naive that I didn't realize that they wouldn't be six feet tall and as wide as a house in person . . .  I also didn't know that there was such a thing as an "off season".  I thought that the athletes looked like they did at contest time all year round.

I met Mike Mentzer and Chris Dickerson that year.  Mike was pretty bitter and out of shape (post 1980 Olympia debacle).  Chris was in the lobby of the Beacon theater in New York just about to win the Night of Champions.  I could go on and on about the impact it had on me to meet these guys and get both positive and negative "reality checks" about my innocent conceptions of the sport . . . But I'll just say that meeting other pro athletes now (at age 42) is nothing like meeting them when I was a wide eyed 16-year-old.  I actually work with Chris now and it's just a whole different thing.  I admire his achievements in the sport.  He's a good friend.  But now we're both adults and my days of "heroes" are long behind me.

JD Dawudo - top guy who is very laid back even when some dumbass almost dropped a 180lb dumbell on his head while spotting him. He had no problem spotting those around him in the gym.

Art Atwood - another nice guy with a good heart.

Branch Warren - was brief but polite. He was 2 days out from a comp and was very tired so no complaints about being brief.

Chris Cook - very polite and a fun guy just to hang out with

Palumbo - PAAAAAAAAAR--TY!!!!

Titus - unrealiable and ungrateful

Kovacs - my overall impression was that of shyness

Lou Ferrigno - money hungry asshole. Seems to hate life.

Dina - Sweet heart and not shy!

Shawn Ray - Professional and helped me when I needed it. I like him.

Lee Priest - A very dry sense of humour - I got the impression that his 'care-free' attitude had an element of anger/bitterness in there.

Charles Glass - sat beside him on a plane and he was happy to answer my training questions. Lots of smiling.

Ronnie - spoke to him in a strip club and he was distracted so hard to tell!

Jay - total gentleman and happy to help. No ego.

Cathy Priest (or whatever her name is now) - even more beautiful in person. Sweet girl.

Thats all I can remember now.

Cormier - trained with him at Golds, ( Farkin strong ) very cool & relaxed

Jim Quinn - very cool & talktive, incredible vascurality (just competed)

Porter Cottrell - couldnt meet a nicer bloke, talkative.....talk under water

Mike Matarazzo - good bloke, the kinda fella that would be good have a drink with

Larra Creavalle - absoulute sweetie, hung out for a while, very gratefull to her fans!

Rich Gaspari - idiolized this bloke as a kid but not after meeting him. Could of caught him at a bad time??

Gary Strydom - cant say enough good bout him. Went to his Crazee wear store and bought some things. Put our stuff in the car and went to another place. When we got back to the car it had been broken into and everything stolen. Anyway saw Garry at Golds later that night and approached him and it got onto our shit experience earlier that day. Garry just goes come back to the shop tomorrow and ask for me. So we did and he then proceeded to just GIVE me & my mate some clothes straight of the rack. BLOODY LEGEND!!

Ernie Taylor - cool fella, i asked him when he was competeing again (this was 97) and he just said he'll have to save some money before he can think bout competing again....

Tom Platz - gave out alot of advice, total professional, i walked away impressed

Francis Benfatto - another really good fella!! hung out for a bit. He's another that loves a chat.

Kevin Levrone & Flex - my thoughts?.... probabley the owners of the 2 best bods that ive metioned here BUT.....nah

Mr. Corney:

It is a pleasure to have a legend here. I have been friends with and promotiuons partner with Mike Katz for many years here in CT. He always speaks fondly of you. He was reminicing at dinner a few months ago about your search for junk food after the show in Iraq (1972 or 1973)...and all there was was boiling sheep's heads in barrels in the streets!

Hope you didn't eat any of that and waited for some good old American pizza!
Title: Re: Have you met any bodybuilding pros?
Post by: Moosejay on February 17, 2008, 04:18:46 PM
Mike Mattarazzo (best guy...supportive of all competitors)
Mike Katz (legend and truly nice guy)
Dennis Tinnerino (Charismatic)
Boyer Coe (very proper, respectful, thoughtful of answers to all questions)
Kal Szkalak (told it like it was)
Frank Zane (Cerebral, brilliant, very detailed)
Lance Dreher (just remeber huge arms)
Robby Robinson (Not much I'd rather say)
Aaron Baker (did a few sets with him...was hurried and barely let me get a photo with him)
Gary Strydom (Giant and biggest eater I ever saw...rivalring Waller)
Johnny Morant (huge back...jokester)
Tony Pearson (cool guy...looks smallins in clothers...but just expands onstage)
Danny Padilla (as short as they say...very strong leg presser)
Troy Zuccolatto-( saw him posing with those fake, silver weights for WBF)
Rich Gaspari-tenacious, smart, successful business man...if you are using his products he will really only respond to you if you make marked increases in size)
Franco Santoriello-Sat with him at a booth years ago...kept me laughing...didn't really do his "job" as he was scoping out all the honies)
Mike Christian (not very nice...)
Gunther Schlierkamp (Very Nice...took time to let us work in and joked with us)
Jeff King (stood on stage next to him as teen and looked like a tattoo on his pec)
Bill Pearl-(shook his hand outside the PDI show)
Ron Coleman (NOT Ronnie Coleman!)-very eloquest...stuck at Twinlab booth and would engage in lengthy discourse with anyone would care to.
Sonny Schmidt-(man of few words)
Gary Strydom(he told me he had to eat a whole box of PR bars while doing bike/cardio or his body would just 'eat itself')
David Dearth
Phil Hill (not very nice...)
Greg Rando (I think he does have partial site...I may be wrong on this)
Kent Kuehn (popped me on the head when I was 15 in 1978 training at original Gold's...scared me shitless but then I saw he was only joking...even at fiteen, I knew who he was...!)
Ed Giulianni...Let me train for free for one week at Gold's or World's (I think he was Gold's at this point...since I was friends with Miuke Katz. I was nervouse around these guys...but not too nervous to mentions Katz's name :)
Joe Gold (only saw him at counter)
Bob Jodkiewicz
Andreas Cahling
Chris Dickerson-I swear he looked at me in a lascivious way -thought-correctly...this one must be gay-just before he won O.
Greg Deferro (shoulders upon which you could land a jet fighter
Evan Centopani (about as thankful nd gracious as a pro could be)
The Barbarian Brothers...(On my 1978 trip to cali as a 15 year old...they were their benching tons...slapping each other...with a guy snapping shots and some flowery, granola gal flapping around them as if high or otherwise.

1998...training with Robby...ran into Art Zeller...I was in shape so it bugs me to this day I did not ask art to take some shots of Robby and me....those would have been classics...he seemed definitely willing to do so...and he died several months later.

Just a few add-ons!

Tom Platz...when he was running WBF for McMahon in CT...would talkk to anyone after he was done training...came off as very astute in business

Bob Chick...approached him when he won the Pro Master's NY and reminded :) him that I took 9th and he 4th in the 1981 teen natural America in Utica, NY. A good laugh was had by both of us. I was surprised at how much he time talking to me just about things in general, with a smile, and he had to go back on stage soon to win the show. Much of you all say on here about him is bunk, if you ask me.

Kevin Levrone...I approached him at one of his two guest posings at the Montanari brother's and Mike Katz's Junior Nats help in Hartford CT around 2000 and 2001 (may be off on years...but right aroiund there)

I had berought a friend who was interested in bb but was more of a muscian. He was the real deal...played with Grand Funk Railroad 20 years earlier and was getting back in.

Knowing Levrone had something of musical talent himslef with a band, I was certain he'd be interested to speak to someone of Ike's standing.

Well, not only was Levrone about 300 pounds of cut-devoid floppy flesh (the worst of the amateurs could have beated him that night) he pretty much blew Ike and me off.

Of course, Ike just said fuck it...I was a bit more fleutered. Since, Ike plays backup to some of the bands of a few of the late-nite shows (although they are sporadic gigs) and does studio work for Janet Jacket among others. He told me he made $80,000 for six months of work doing shity that he loves...and that he gets royalties.

So, remember, Mr. Levrone...you NEVER know who you are talking to.

Whener I bring up Kevin's name to Ike (I like to break his balls)...he says...fuck that lard-ass...Mike...please do not ever waste my time like that again.

Fopr the record, and to the dismay olf the promoters...Levrone showed, sulking and all...t o the next year's edition even more of a butterball. I mean...it didn 't even look like him. Katz was so pissed he wondered allow if he could get the 5,000$ guest pose fee back (note: he could not-as a Weider contracted athlete...guest pose fees go to the IFBB.)

Janet Tech...80's female bb...sexy, too skinny.
Donna Oliviera.." " " " " " " " ..handed out trophies to m y class
Fred Jarrett
Eliott Gilchrist
Len Bosland

I go back a bit further so I've had the opportunity to meet many great bodybuilders you never had the opportunity to say, "Howdy" to.

Reeves was the first I can recall, (he was still a teenager then) then Eifferman, and Terpak, and Hilligen, and Clancey Ross, and Strohl, and Stephans, and Lewis and his beautiful wife, Sheri, and Don Peterson, and Mozee, and Bill Pearl, Larry Scott, and Gironda, and Bill Grant, and Arnold and Franco, and Sergio and Serge, and Platz and Ferrigno and Jeff King, and Lee Labrada, and ,Jeff and Cory and, Lisa/Liza?? Lyons, and Ray and Mike, and Strydom, and Rich Gaspari, and Peter G.,  and Porter, and Chick, and most of  the new top guys coming up such as Curry, and Trey and Peter Putnam and Flex, and Daniel Hill (Germany) and just about all of the above guys mentioned in previous posts and a few others whom I've already forgotten.

And Joe and Ben and Betty and most of the guys who helped form up the IFBB and the majority of those individuals who initially formed up the NPC.

And I've met and mingled with the likes of Ernie, and Zabo, and Arty, and Manion and Corvello, and Nuckles, and Bill Smith, and Birdsong and doctors from every branch of the medical profession who have contributed to the "sport" in one form or another. And most of those who have written the "rules" that competitors are supposed to abide by today. And the majority of the photographers who shoot for the major magazines.

I've been around the bodybuilding block a few times and have only tripped off the curb on rare occasions .... meaning I have seldom met a bodybuilding athlete or associate who I have no respect for. In fact, those I don't respect can be counted on half the fingers of my left hand.

Hey Stunt...great post.

I have to include Bill Grant and Zabo and I judged with Manion.

I even sat a few seats away from Robert Deniro who was at end of judging table at Ken Kassell's Women's Extravaganza some years ago at the Meadowlands.

Anyway to still contact Clancy Ross...must be 84 now, but I am sure, If Jack L is any indication, he should have his wits about him.

Does Clancy do any appearances or anything?

Mike, I haven't heard anything about Clancy in a hell of a long time and, to be honest with ya, I don't even know if he is still among the living.

Did you also know Pat Ruhl or Joe Nazzario? I can't locate either of them any longer.

I met Jack L. a few times. Back in the 50's he  had a small gym on the fifth floor of an old building on Market Street in San Francisco. I think that is where he started in the gym business. Then he eventually went big time with another place on Market Street closer to the center of the shopping area (in the vicinity of the Powell Street cable car turnstyle) and that place had all chrome equipment and carpet and clean mirrors. And from there he just grew throughout No and So Cal.

Jack was well known in the Bay Area for doing unbelievable feats on his birthdays, such as swimming across San Francisco under the Golden Gate Bridge, swimming to and from Alcatraz, and one year even swimming while pulling a boat load of people. Crazy stuff!

My best friend's wife used to be the only model he used in those days for his "SPA" newspaper ads. They would just change her head each month so it appeared that they were using many different models.

Do you recall a gym chain that lasted less than a year by the name of American Health Studios?

Clancy is living...pretty sure of that. He is in Cali, aboyt 84 years old.

Nazzario, yes. Read about a comeback a year or two ago in one of the mags. Believe he is in Florida.

Was Ruhl an America competitro in the late 70's?

Yes, I do recall hearing of American Health Studios.

I worked security at the Europa so I got to met a lot of guys.
I got Trey Brewer, Johnny Stewart, Kai Green, Michal Locket, George Farra to all autograph pics for my gym.
I used to work out at Metroflex a lot and I would see Branch and QT in there all the time but I never talked to them.  The owner Brian Dobson is very nice.

Met quite a few.  The only prick i've ever come across was Lou Ferrigno.  VCormier had to be the coolest.  Berry DeMay, Matarazzo, Shawn Ray and Lee Haney were real nice and personalbe.  Lee Haney actually took the time to talk to me after a show I did in 1990 where I did not place too high.  Chris Duffy was cool too, but maybe he was just trying to hit on me :o

Thanks, Moose! If you or anyone ever comes in contact with Joe Nazzario, pls have him contact me through this board.

And I'll do my best to check on Clancy's present status.

I don't recall Ruhl competing in the 70's but I'm bad when it comes to days/months/and years; so there is a strong possibility that I could be wrong.

I believe American Health Studios was a partnership between some of those old time bodybuilders back in the late 50's/ early 60's but it didn't last too long.

I was a pretty strong bench presser back then and I recall training at downtown San Francisco AHS location on Golden Gate Ave when Steve Reeves happened to visit the place and took a seat to watch me do some heavy benching for a few minutes.

I guess he was meeting friends there because once they arrived, he said something complimentary and took off.

Can anyone else in this forum claim that he/she got a lifting compliment from the MAN (soon to be Hercules) himself?

Ruhl may have been in the 78 America, but that may have been a 'Ruhlman'

And no...never had seen or met Reeves....awesome for you, though!

Roy Callendar-pleasant, easy going.

Chris Dickerson-articulate, remembers names, urbane.

Robby Robinson-friendly in a slightly edgy way.

Roger Walker-kinda rough, your typical Aussie lout. :D

Schwarzenegger-always an agenda, won't do anything for the hell of it, IMO.

I trained at Mustafa's gym and once he spotted me on squats.
He told me I am strong and should be training hard as long as I'm young (I was 33 at that time)  :)

Despite his reputation he is a very funny guy and treats his gym members like family.

I met Bob Birdsong in the gym in the early 80's. i was an early teenager just starting to lift. I remember he was huge and about 5'0. But i just read that he is 5'8! too much booze over the years for me i guess, memory fading. Anyway, i was squatting heavy (probably 85 lbs), he walked by and said "you're making progress." Shit i thought i was tom platz.

I've met Stan McCrary at the 2005 Southeastern USA. I think he was still with MuscleTech at the time. He was promoting his video and other wares, and I believe his girlfriend was competing in the figure show there. She won her class; but the overall title went to the same girl who won the fitness show (she was the only competitor in that one).

There are several pros who work out at the gym where I train. The gym owner is Jonathan Rowe, his training partner is Roc Shabazz. Leo Ingram trains there as well as Kim Buck and Carmella Cureton.

Back in 1995 or so, I was visiting Louisville and met Porter Cortrell at a restaurant.  Back then, Porter was all over and popular.  Honestly, it would be hard pressed to find a more polite and personable bodybuilder in the industry.  Not only did he not mind being interrupted while out dining with a friend but he took the time to talk with us.  The one thing that really stood out about the type of character he has, is that he asked for my address to send an autographed photo because he felt bad he didn't have anything to sign.  Porter took my address and a few weeks later actually sent a autographed photo like he said he would.  How many guys of celebrity status in ANY forum of sport would do what they say like that?  Just a class act all the way.

Hey Herc, are you going to be at the Atlantic states this weekend? I will.

Roc S stole the hearts of the crowd over Gustavo Badell guest posing with him at last yrs NPC show in Gadsen , AL.
His booth rocked and his routine was pretty cool.

Oh someone just posted that Porter Cotrell was a great guy. I can tell you, that you would have hard time finding anyone in bodybuilding who is better person that Porter.

My father knew Joe Weider from the 1950's and also judged the 1973 Mr. Olympia contest where he met Arnold. When I was 14 I saw the film Pumping Iron and got obsessed with bodybuilding. I had my dad take me to see the Mr. Olympia in 1977 when I was 15 and I met Arnold. He let me and my dad go backstage and meet all the guys.  I also went to the 1978 Olympia as well and got backstage. Then Joe Weider arranged it so I could stay at Mike Mentzer's apartment for a week with him and his girlfriend when I was about 16. He put me through his Heavy Duty workouts at the Gold's gym and he was very nice. I remember he was impressesed with my nutritional and training knowledge I already had at such a young age. I also met Boyer Coe when I was there. He was extremely friendly and I ended up going to Louisiana about 6 months later to train with him as he was preparing for the 78 Mr. Olympia. These were some great experiences. A few months before the '79 Mr. Olympia, Arnold calls my house and asks to speak to my dad. My father was pretty well known as a big investor in the Finance world and Arnold asked him if he would invest in a documentary film he was making about weight training in prison. My father decided not to invest. Anyhow, I show up at the 79 Olympia with a friend of mine and I go backstage because Arnold always told me to go backstage every year. So Arnold walks over to me and screams at me, "Get out of here! You're not allowed back here!" I was in shock because he acted like he didn't recognize me, when a few months before he spotted me at World Gym and came up to me and spoke to me for like 20 minutes. So I go Arnold, it's me ..... and he says, "Get the Hell out of here!" I didn't figure it out till later that this was his message to my dad for not investing with him. True story.

For about a year after the 79 olympia, I would call Arnold's office and his secretary would answer. I've always been good at doing impressions, so she would think I was Joe Weider and put Arnold on the phone. Then after a few seconds, Arnold would figure it out and go, "Who da hell is dis?".  Then I called once and fooled his secretary into thinking I was Clint Eastwood. Now this was in 79 before Arnold had made Conan..he had made a ridiculous film called the Villain, playing a cowboy role. So Arnold gets on the phone(I did a flawless Eastwood imitation, even as a teen) and he's like "Mr. Eastwood, let me tell you, I have always admired you. Your movies are totally fantastic and I love da vay you also direct your own movies. It's an incredible honor to speak with you." So I tell him "Well, I was hoping we could talk about my new Dirty Harry movie because I've got a great part for you in it." Now he's like creaming his pants and he goes, "REALLY?" Then switching back to my Weider voice I go, "Just kidding Arnold, It's me!" He screams, "God damn you!" and slams the phone down. I had all this on a cassette tape and I used to play it for people. Too bad the tape broke on me.

Hey Moosejay, it sounds like you've been into this scene as long as me,so you might get a kick out of this Frank Zane story. I was at a Frank Zane seminar in Miami, Florida..late 70's.. he's lecturing with a blackboard and going into a lot of detail(probably because he used to be a school teacher) and there's this dorky looking guy who's about 6 feet and weighs all of 120 pounds. He's what we nowadays would call an attention deficit disorder individual. He would keep blurting out shit and interupting Zane. He suddenly yells out, "Mr. Zane, would you write me out a Bulk routine?" Zane tells him to just keep listening and he learn all he needs to know. Then the dork says, "Excuse me, Mr. Zane but.. Larry Scott wrote me a Bulk Routine!" Zane loooks at him and says, " yeah..it's obviously working real good." Then Zane starts talking about the mental side and says, " When I walk on stage or even..in a room, I project total confidence and people, whether they are judges at the Mr. Olympia or whatever perceive me as a winner." Then he walks up to the dork, points at him and says.."But if this Guy walks in a room with that attitude, he would be laughed at. In other words, you have to be able to back it up". The dork walked out to the parking lot, got in his car and drove away. I'll never forget it. Zane owned him!

Oh, man...that is beautiful!

Zane was my #1 idol growing up....3 years aso I went to his 12 day 'Zane Experience'...it was very good...he is still in good shape, and he even played us some tunes on his guitar and flutes each day. Definitely different but I learned alot. I occasionally write for his newsletter. He is very cerebral...and I can imagine exactly what you described with that nutty skinny dude at the seminar!-wish I was there for it :)

Yeah...I am 44 and have been at it about 30 years...like you.

Too bad the tape broke on me.

hahahah! great story! keep em coming.  ;)

That is too damn funny, ya gotta go on ironagage.us and post it, those guys will love it.
I think some willthink it complete BS, but I know how small a world BB was back then even comapred to today and how Arnold was not a big star yet, etc.
Of course the office the GOv of Cal will be in touch with you now and they are sending the goon squad LOL

Man...it really would have been golden if you had that tape.

I STILL have a cassette tape of R Robinson 'lecturing' in classroon situation at his bb camp in CT in 1978. All I can say is at 15, I think I knew more names of the muscles than he did.

Hey Moose, remember how awesome Robby looked in Weider's magazines leading up to the 77 Olympia? He was like 220 and shredded. It looked as though he would easily take the Olympia. I remember sitting in the 3rd row and he looked a little watery and Zane won. Robby got into great shape several times after that, but I don't think he ever got as big and cut as he was in those months leading up to the 77 O. Would you agree? I still have some of those old issues and he just looks phenomenal in some of those pics.

Yes, Chem, I do agree. He was phenomenal in the gym and in most shows other than the O. Whenever the O would come, and he'd stand next to Zane...he'd just look smooth...big difference from the other shows. Maybe it was mental with him...

Chem...do you recall in Weider's mags that old, raggedy t-shirt Robby'd wear while training? He'd have to piece it together.... He was so ripped in those shots....

I have met Porter Cottrell and Ali Malla......along with Gaspari......Phil Williams..Rico MCclinton...Shawn Ray......Craig Titus.....Ronnie Coleman.....and Mike Mentzer....also met.....Vince Galanti......and Aaron Baker......Gunter and Claude Groulx.

Without a doubt.....Rico...Porter. ....Ali.....Claude.....P hil.....Ronnie and Gunter are the nicest guys around. Same with Vince Galanti......great great guys.

Porter took time out of his workout to take a pic and shake our hands.....very kind and personable.

Gaspari is the biggest prick in the sport......conceited and aloof......total primadonna.

Mentzer had a sensational sense of humor but a little on the bizzarre side.

Ronnie was truly a people pleaser and very kind indeed.

In 1986, I went to the Mr. Olympia...I was in my early 20's. There was a rumor going around everywhere, that Gaspari  had a heart attack and wouldn't be in the show. So I'm walking in the lobby of the hotel and I see Gaspari walking around...so i ask him if he's going to be in the show. He says, "Of course I'm in the show...Idiot!"..and walks off. True story.

I met Ronnie at a seminar in South Africa, what sticks in my mind was someone asking him what the most important thing was for success in bodybuilding; Training? Nutrition? Mentality?

Ronnies reply?

"You need a Doctor who's a Bodybuilder".

The ones i met that were all acting professional and nice, but nothing more:

Dorian Yates, Lee Labrada,Sonny Schmidt,Geir Borgan Paulsen,JP Fux,Dennis James,Dennis Wolf, Ronnie Rockel, + many i cant remember now.

The ones that were really cool and took lots of time to talk and hang.:

Ron Love(coolest of them all),Vince Taylor,Milos Sarcev, Darrion Holliwell.

The ones that acted arrogant and snooty (maybe they had a bad day?):

Vic Richards, Gary Strydom.

Yeah, that's Andrulla. I hosted Andrulla and Jeff "Box" Long for about a week in Kuwait. I spent just about the whole time with them. Andrulla was great and amazed the soldiers with how strong she was.  I had a great time.

Saw Branch a few times at a popular gym in Houston, he's shorter than he looks(if that's even possible). Apparently he comes to Houston a few times a year and always trains at a 24 Hour Fitness near my house.

Met Titus back in the 90's when he stayed in Houston for a while, he was actually a very cool guy but everyone i knew who was friends with him said he was two-faced. I ran into him again at a popular night club downtown and he was the life of the party.

Saw Iris at another Houston gym only a few months ago, she's very very strong.

i met dorian once.

He bumped into me in a mcdonalds, he knocked my chips out of my hand.

i turned around not too pleased, and told him he better make full recompense or prepare for the consequences.

he apologised and bought me a cheeseburger happy meal and large chips to make up for it.

he then wiped away a piece of lint on my jacket and apologised again a few times before leaving quickly.

seemed a nice guy, but was clearly depleted.

Met:
-Lee Haney - Really down to earth
-Kevin Levrone - Seemed aloof...could have been having a bad day
-Lou Ferrigno - Really nice guy.  He takes a lot of hits here, but I liked him.
-Lee Labrada - Ultimate professional and seemed like a really good guy
-Linda Murray - Sweet...better looking in person

Competed with these guys before they became pros:
-Shawn Ray - Cool at first, but whined too much when he didn't win.
-Shane Dimora - Only shook his hand after he crushed us in the LW class.
-Juan Marquez, Vince Taylor, Eddie Robinson and a few others from the 1988 NPC Nationals.
-Stan McCrary - Didn't interact with him...He won the heavy weight and overall.
-Daron Lytle - Not a well-known guy....Really cool
-James Hellwig (WWE Ultimate Warrior) - He never became a pro, but....  He won the '84 Mr. Georgia.

I met a few in my day.
Frank Zane- Had a brief conversation with him.

Danny Padilla- Full of smiles like he was really having a good time

Mike Katz-Biggest bodybuilder I have seen. He was almost a scary sight back in the day. People seemed afraid to approach him.

Dennis Tinnereno. (spelling) I was at a contest and a drunk relative of his kept shouting out things at the show. He seemed really embarrassed and pissed off when he was walking down a street after the contest.

Ed Corny-Got mad when my friend asked him if he uses steroids.

Robby Robinson- Looked small to me in his track sweat suit. When he took it off for the show he looked amazing.
