Title: When you bench press, do you use a spotter?
Post by: 240 is Back on February 24, 2008, 07:11:40 PM
how many of you regularly have a spotter when you bench press?

Who swears by spotters?

Who think they're unnecessary on chest day?

im a bit confused as to why i rarely see pros going to failure in their vids etc

its as if they just pump out the reps and stop early....

if ur doin bench press to COMPLEETE FAILURE ....then u need a spotter

my humble opinion... ::)

more and more I use the Cybex plate loaded machine.  No need for a spotter while pushing your limits...train your muscles not your ego.

all too often I see "team" benching..one guy benching while another guy is doing doing rows..

Hardly at all. Most spotter react to fast and do the work for you or they do not react at all therfore saping what energy you may have for another attempt. Your best bet is always the power rack. You can rep and max with out the need for someone else.

I trained alone in my garage - usually chest day is Mon night, 12 to 16 sets of benching and DB work.

My new 'thing' is getting stronger at all costs, so I started getting a spot on the 6 or 7 heavy set with more weight than I can move, and chest is definitely growing again.

No shit. Its physicaly imposible to go all the way to failure without a spotter. How you use that spotter is what matters. People think a spotter helps you lift the wieght, wrong, he saves your ass when you can't complete another on your own, or for forced reps (and this is important) at the end of your set. Case and point today, 2 idiots mabye 145- 155 with all of 185 on the bench, cant do it once on there own, so what do they do, spotter rows bench combos ???

My PT, just makes sure i rack the bar correctly.  ;D  Im a noob, but i think a spotter is great for safely if your lifting some major weight.

Post by: thewickedtruth on February 24, 2008, 07:38:47 PM
nope.. id on't use one. Last time I used a spotter he jerked the weight off the uprights nad just let it go wihtout a lift out or anything or ME calling him to turn it loose adn almost dropped it on my face. This is why I work in a cage. I can set it up to how I WANT IT and set the pins to stop the bar just above my body when I'm flat on the bench..because I bench with an arch..if i fail I just flatten out and let the cage catch it. THis is what it's made for.

LOL yeah i see this all the time they can maybe get a half rep with 95lbs then 10 spotter rows.  Then the next set they jack the weight up to 115lbs and same thing.  Usually these highschool kids with the bushy hairdos and underware up above their pulled down B ball shorts.

Im sorry but i hate those kids.

If you use a power rack you can go all the way to failer. It's really quite simple really. All one has to do is adjust it properly to suit your build. I did this many times and it worked perfectly. You do not have to rely on a spotter.

Get a cage and you can do it alone without worrying about whether to go for one more.  I always hated the need to schedule that comes with having a partner.

the reason is membership numbers. the gyms are all about how many members they can sign up. Less power racks means more need for spotter this means you have to get a training partner.

Any brands, types, or links to share?   I dont know anything about power racks/cages, but I do need a squat rack for home as well.

I dont want to pay $500+ for one, but if I could steal something for under 200 I'd be on it.

stupidest trend in gyms...people over use spots, and it is a pain in the ass, slows everyone down.

It is totally unecessary unless on your very last set you are afraid you might not make it and you def want to go to failure then I can see askin..otherewise you should be able to get in a perfect bodybuilding workout without spotters.

I will go out of my way to avoid being asked to spot someone, it is an utter waste of time.

Not really man.  :(  I just went out and bought one locally.  Some come with a cable & plate stack if you want a simple cable setup.  I went with the cage instead of simple rack in case I REALLY lose it squatting.  Haven't yet.  :)

Just remember that you'll need enough room to accomodate both the cage AND your current bench since you'll have to put the bench somewhere while squatting, etc.  My setup fits ok into a second bedroom, but I wouldn't want it much tighter in there.

To many pec tears with a bar no need for a spotter with dumbells.

Anyone remember J P Fux buckling under 6 plates a side i bet he was wishing he was in a power rack or had someone spotting him.

Shit know wonder he needed two knee reconstructions. If i was him i would have sued Flex even though it would have been futile. Then they have Ernie Taylor doing tricep exstentions with fake plates.I use Flex as toilet paper.

YES, definitely.  I can't lift the bar off and hold my arch without a spotter.

It helps the confidence too, and allows you to go for the extra rep or heavier weight.

Bench press, incline press, shoulder press, and heavy squats are about the only exercises where I absolutely need a spotter.

I use to use a spotter for three things:
1) Get a lift off the rack to start my reps.
2) Get a lift on my last rep.
3) Negatives
Lately I've been using the Cybex or Smith Machine to increase my max bench.

When you bench press, do you use a spotter?

Sometimes. Mostly when I am benching a weight I've never benched before and want to be safe. I never use weights that don't allow me to get at least 6 strict reps, though, so that's usually not a problem.

i dont think its necessary to get a good workout, you can always do dropsets and supersets or dumbells, but that being said I aways get a spotter for benchs i usually just ask someone in the gym to spot me. I love going heavy or whats heavy for me anyway and I love getting a few negatives in if i dont hit my goal(but this requires a decent spotter which i dont always have) >:(

I think spotters are for 1 RM and maybe forced reps on your last set.  You should be able to gauge how many reps you can do.  I have also seen very few pros ever go to failure on any exercise.  They always seem to stop one or two short of failure.

if you don't need a spotter, you're not lifting heavy enough.

i don't feel comfortable trying to get 315+ over my face without having someone handy to make sure i don't bust my teeth. not to mention if something goes wrong during a set it's a good idea to have someone handy.

i'm what we in the biz call a "friendly and helpful person". if you need a spot, i'll give you one. want to borrow my straps? go ahead. need a little chalk? i got plenty of extra. want to try on my belt for that last set of squats? go for it, the thing's great if it fits ya. wondering why i do an exercise the way i do? ask away, just let me finish my set and catch my breath first.

your type piss me off greatly. how important do you think you are that helping a fellow lifter is such an inconvenience? are you training for the mr olympia or WSM?

you're a jackass. :D

oh well

i'm what we in the biz call a "friendly and helpful person". if you need a spot, i'll give you one. want to borrow my straps? go ahead. need a little chalk? i got plenty of extra. want to try on my belt for that last set of squats? go for it, the thing's great if it fits ya. wondering why i do an exercise the way i do? ask away, just let me finish my set and catch my breath first.

your type piss me off greatly. how important do you think you are that helping a fellow lifter is such an inconvenience? are you training for the mr olympia or WSM?

nice post and im glad your so nice...no im not training for anyhting special...

I dont see the big deal. Someone needs a spot, give them one. Its pretty easy and takes about 30secs.

I always keep an eye out for people when they bench. Some people load up the bar and you can just tell that their unsure if they can do it or not. They just dont look confident about it.

i also do the same thing and i have no problem helping some guy that may be getting stuck under bar but honestly i have to deal with people and helping people all day every day and whern i get to the gym after work i just want to be left alone barring any emergencies...if im a jack ass for it then fine but try dealing with the shit i deal with for 12-14 hours a day then we can talk...
