Title: How big is your home...?
Post by: Moosejay on April 30, 2008, 06:28:06 PM
Just got a call from my very best friend from chiro school.

He practices in Michigan and is very successful.

Some years ago, I went to visit him and check out the new house he had built.

It was enormous.

13 rooms. Same neighborhood as Isaiah Thomas.

But, he lived alone.

"John," I asked him, "You are only one person...why so big a house? You can only be in one room at one time..."

He wanted to impress women.

"Man, you should just drive the in front of a house like this, tell 'em its yours, but you can't go in cause its getting painted..."

Lotta aggravation for a guy with family or no kids.

Well, he ended up selling it, took a loss (sold at the wrong time), and got a smaller, but nice, place.

Anyone here have a similar situation? Too big? Too small?

Moosejay (yes, I am still in the hospital and bored...)

i think mine is 2300 sq ft.  4 BR, 2 giant baths, big office, big playroom, awesome ceilings, huge yard... just over $1000 per month in florida's downtrodden rental situation

bought my house in 1986, 1400 sq ft, $13k down, $600/month, original mortgage, never refinanced

zillow.com shows it's lost $60k in value in the last 6 months.  oh well.

Pretty good....mine is a tad under 2,000 sq. ft....but I live alone, 2.5 baths; 2 br; home office; vaulted ceilings; 1/2 acre yard, three car garage (but I only have one car!)

Yessir.  I had all my pennies ready to put down a down payment last summer, then everyone started selling and houses dropped... I was *really* ready to buy, then a bunch of scumbags moved into the nice neighborhoods, crime went up, and now I don't know where I want to live.

FL has gone downhill bad with the recession, with 1 in 80 homes being foreclosed.  1/3 of the houses on any street are for rent, with 2-3 of them being empty.  You haev some filthy people moving into formerly high quality areas because rent is so cheap.  I don't like it, and I don't have a clue when, where, or if to buy here.

VERY smart.

You know it doesn't matter if your house is worth 10 cents...don't let market gyrations bug you as long as you do not plan on moving.

Historically, boith the stoick market and real estate have both gained an average of 11% per year.

BTW, Tim, you are LIST approved.

The problem is, in order to get a house with larger rooms, you often end up with more rooms, even when you don't need them.  Houses are designed for families with kids, not couples or individuals.  My wife and I would be fine with a 2-3 bedroom, 2-bath house, but unfortunately those only seem to come as "starter homes" where the individual rooms are tiny as shit.  Obviously, we have no use for a "starter home",  so in order to get a house with things we wanted like a large master suite, large living areas, study, exercise room, grand entry, etc, we ended up with a house that has 5 bedrooms, 4 of which are storage or empty, and 4 bathrooms, only two of which are ever used.  Thank god we have Mexicans to keep the damn thing clean.   ;)

Ha yeas...I see your quandary and it is very true.

I had my house built to spec and it is a smaller version of a post modern I had my eye on, yet itv was way too big for one person.

When I get out of here, I will post a pic of it...I love it...its on home computer...

yeah, wife and kid, and a neice staying a bit while my sister deals with some health problems.   It's awesome... TV room, ecercise room, guest room... the place is huge.  I used to live in a trailer, then a small-ass apartment, so I definitely appreciate it every day to be blessed with a big home to live in :)

I have no clue what to do at the moment.  Every real estate agent I meet says "The time to buy is now!" as they're shopping their resume or going back to school.  Most everyone I know is in over their head/upside down on the mortgage.  FL roads/water infrastructure are horrible... they're tearing up half the county putting in city water (running on WELL WATER now), so every homeowner gets a $10k bill on top of their AR mortgage bitch slapping them.

When it's time to renew lease, I'm telling the landlord I want to pay $100 or 150 less, and I think he'll be thankful just to have someone to rent.  It's that ugly here.

At least you are perceptive to know that things are awry...many think they are supposed to struggle like this.

Good that you have appreciation from coming from trailer, and small apartment. You will continue to rise, I think.

Yes, I still have the dream of one day being a thousandaire.  It's made me humble though.  When you live in the trailer park, people really do cling to their guns and their religion.  Old people with cancer they can't treat, walking around the trailer park in their bra and shorts, reading the bible all day with a shotgun on the porch, watching tv in a trailer with no AC, waiting to die.  So depressing.  I don't take anything for granted.  I'm blessed to be living like this now and I thank God every day.

My friend...it is so true. I have these thought now laying inthe hosp.

When I was in clinic as a student, I worked in the Salvation Army half way house...where I had to do physical on many inm, ates just being released from prison.

You could tell many were lifetime thugs...they'd be back,.

One guy..though, I read through his chart and he was a CEO of a big company...lost it all, gambling, drugs, crime, all kinds of crazy stuff.

Lost his family.

I thought I was a hot shot, and kind of imperiously asked him (a tone I would never again take on), "How the Hell did YOU end up here...?)

As I was walking away, he grabbed my smock, and said words I since have not forgotten:

"Young man, we are all (puts finger and thumb one inch apart) this close to pushing a shopping cart,.

Truer words never spoken

We're closing on our first home in mid May. Even with increased number of rental properties being a risk, I still think it is a good time to buy. The house we're getting dropped $20k on the asking price the week we put an offer in, and that kind of discount seemed to be pretty standard in the areas we looked, even if all its doing is bringing prices back to what they should be. My un-scientific theory is even if you buy something in an area that may have more rentals around, as the market turns around in 2-3 years those property values are going to start increasing again and landlords are going to want to start making their money back, the po folk won't be able to rent a 4 bedroom 3 bath for $1300 a month anymore.

Thanks, it's awesome in the summer we have some fun parties.

The original house is very old!  We completely gutted/remodeled the entire house, however we kept a lot of the orignal architecture to give it an old world feel.  That house is my pride and joy (my wife is up there too)

Yes...I can tell by the stone turret.

I live in CT and there are houses that are over 300 years old here.

But you have to have your druthers together to get one sans too many problems.

In the background you can see part of an old barn which we converted to a guest house.  It's a full size loft with full bath, living room, kitchen.  We lived there for 6 months while getting our home remodeled.

XF - the home is beautiful.

Yeah, the neighborhood is what scares me.  The hosues on my block are 250k to 300k in FL prices (much higher in cali), and you have some poor folks on my road. I don't like that.  If I'm putting a good chunk of my life's $ into a house, I want a safe neighborhood.

incredibly cheap.  but that means poor people are moving in and bringing crime with them.  2 home invasions yesterday in fort myers.  one of them, a teenage kid hit an old man with a hammer for his wife's purse.  people here are broke, and broke people do desperate shit.  another, the robber drove to a nice part of down, knocked on door, then kicked the shit out of the lady who answered and took some $ and left.  broad daylight too.

construction industry died overnight, so did tourism.  Lots of people whose only skill is painting or drywall or roofing, who suddenly have no way to pay the bills (they were already living hand to mouth, when construction industry was booming).

Unless the neighborhood's fucked.

haha good point. They're doing a lot of re-builds and scraping old homes in the neighborhood so I think we'll be allright. One of the new mini-mansions 4 streets down is going for $1.8 mil now. Honestly if there end up being more rentals on my street I'd look for an opportunity to buy some rental properties too, my in-laws are still doing well with about a dozen properties in the greater area even in this market. The thing I learned to stay away from were neighborhoods with a lot of foreclosures and/or the new suburbs, there's way too much new supply/sprawl in the Dallas area to justify buying another new starter home and hope to God for 3-4% appreciation in 10 years.

Funny...I have had more than a few patients who were in the trades (Painting, handywork, carpentry, etc) move to Florida bc they said jobs were easier to come by than in CT

true, a year ago.

today you have 1/2 built houses everywhere.  Pulte and other homebuilders laid off hundreds of people.

Man, that is sad.

I hate to see that happen...especially to people with kids.

Hopefully, folks can hang in there till things turn around.

Goodness for all.....

If you don't mind me asking, in the second pic, is that a converted old grain silo on the back of a barn? If so, very nice work staying true to the rustic architecture of the property. I like it a lot.

I really am shocked to see some of you with this insight and culture. Very cool.  My own friends think that it's weird that we built around the silo.

We are putting the jacuzzi in, yes you guessed it the silo.  I honesty feel in love with this when I first toured the property. The barn worked out great as we remodled it and made it a loft. We lived in that while we completed the home for six months.

one of them, a teenage kid hit an old man with a hammer for his wife's purse.  people here are broke, and broke people do desperate shit.  another, the robber drove to a nice part of down, knocked on door, then kicked the shit out of the lady who answered and took some $ and left.

There's less and less paper money floating around out there... most people use plastic these days and don't carry cash.  I'm surprised the criminals are finding any paper cash to steal.

i'm sure they left with a total of $20 for all their trouble.  My point is that people are invading homes for grovery money, and stuff really isn't that bad at all at the moment.  Barely a recession by definition.  I can imagine people will get really stupid and brave when they're truly hungry.

just over a grand, huh?  Nice.

I etch my name into the slide of my glock.  If someone wants my info, I stick a gun in their face and tell them to squint.  Cops get so antsy though.

Correct...not a recession...there is ACTUALLY mild growth going on currently.,...not alot, but some.

Can't be a recession with growth.

240...isn't your bro the one whose a pharmacist and shot a perp?

Bully for him!

Yep.  The guy rode to Miami with a .45 hollow point round in his gut, next to his spine.  he got surgery under his uncle's name, then came right back to north fort myers to his home, where cops had staked out.  He is now partially paralyzed on left side of body and craps in a bag for life.  He's doing 13 years for shooting at a cop the day before he robbed the pharmacy.  I think he pled to 6 add'l years for the pharmacy job.

Mmmmm...I dunno....that is too easy.

However...if we are DEEP into a recession...then the end should be near of it.

These things are cyclic, as you know, with beginnings, middles and ends.

Hell...shot at a cop one day, then your brother the next.

Shouldn't he have gotten life?

I thought Florida laws were togh down there?

In liberal CT...he'd have gotten 7 years.

None of it is based on reality...its based on what the media wants the 6-8th grade reading level folks to believe.

Bad guy never fired a round.  He walked in, he raised his gun and my brother fired 5 rounds on his way to cover.  3 went into the counter next to the guy, 1 went into his abdonimal, and one went thru the window... zipped past the per's head by a few inches.    the other guy dropped his pill bucket and got the hell outta there.  My bro stuck his piece out the side walkway to meet BG #2 but he was already gone.

My bro is still all messed up over it.  nightmares, etc.  not a glorious thing, but very good tale for those who say guns are bad.  They had planned to kill both pharmacy guys.

Holy...! Is he still a pharmacist?

I'd always be wary from now on, too.

Did they put him through the 3rd degree for firing his gun?

If the pers were black...did Sharptonites march on him?

Just asking bc they just closed the Sean Bell trial near me in NY...he was a black 23 yr old who was shot and killed by 4 cops...two cops black, one hispanic, one white...and, naturally, Sharpton et al call 'race'...(don't mean to get off-topic...)

they got the whole shooting on video, it was clean.  We never saw the video, they took it.

They took his gun for 22 months.  (we went and bought him another the next morning)

He's since gotten out of the pharmacy game.   everyone and their mother down here is an oxy popper.

Back on topic about houses...... I was in a 30,000 square foot house in Lake Tahoe. I only saw about 1,500 square feet of the place but the caretaker said it totaled out to 30,000.

A huge place with its own "bay" for as many boats as you would care to own. Very private and no other homes in sight. And smack dab on the lake.

Last I heard, it was up for sale. Anyone interested?

I figure you could pick it up for $30,000,000.

i cant really complain much, I'm in a 1800 square foot house with unfinished basement, full attic, new windows put in last year.  Only one bathroom, 3 bedrooms, computer room, living room, dining room, kitchen, library, and it's me and 2 of my buddies.  One of my housemates is the homeowner's brother.  She won a settlement against the pharmaceutical company that made phenphen for a couple million.  She used to live with us but she bought a big house in the suburbs and is renting to us for cheap instead of selling because the market is shit right now.  So i got another friend to move in and we basically cover the mortgage and taxes for $700 a month.  That's dirt cheap.  Most 800 sq ft 2 br apartments in this area go for about $700 a month.  I wouldn't buy a house right now, it's totally not worth it for me because I might move to another city within the next 5 years, and my total monthly living expenses with rent, utilities, internet, and dish network is under $400 a month which is only a couple days work for me so it frees up money for other fun things.

Hell, most college graduates don't even have a clue what makes an economy work... they just parrot the idiocy the mass media feeds then daily.  Maybe five in every hundred people have any real grasp on macroeconomics.

Yes...many pharmacists up here go to work for the food stores...tough being on own.

These days, just say "no" to health care! :)

Very true.

Like slack-jawed, salivating Pavlovian mutts, waiting to respond like lemmings to the bell of the media
