Hey Everyone! As some of you may already know, our great friend Laura Lee has been suffering from some health problems this past year. First a heart problem, then pneumonia, then sarcoidosis. She battled through all these, but now is facing one final hurdle, which is cancer. We all know Laura will beat this because she's such a fantastic, strong, smart, beautiful person. Get well Laura and you have a great life ahead of you.
-
Confirmed - I set up the paypal donation box with Mike and Laura today on www.dweetir.com
Prayers with them in this tough and scary time - a time that we'll all face ourselves one day.
I have been dealing with several health issues this year. First we thought I had a heart problem (was in hospital with heart rate of 185 bpm). Then pneumonia and while they treated me for that they discovered I had sarcoidosis, an auto immune disease. While being treated for that in my lungs they worked on getting my heart back to a normal rhythem (had an ablation on my heart 2 months ago) and they treated the sarcoidosis in my lungs with high dosages of prednisone. My primary doctor wanted my thyroid checked because I've had nodules on them for about 4 years. Back in Massachusetts when first diagnosed with the nodules they had me on thyroid medication for hypothyroidism. I was on that for about 6 months but my tsh and t3 and t4 levels were normal so they took me off and watched the nodules for a while, they didn't change. So anyway, couple years later...now in Florida, my new doctor sent me to have an ultrasound done on them. They showed the nodules that I had told him I had. He sent me to an endocrinologist who ordered a thyroid uptake scan. After the scan the doctor said he wanted the nodules biopsied. I had them biopsied last Monday. Wednesday he called me and told me that 2 came back negative, 1 positive. That I have cancer of the thyroid and it would have to come out. I spoke to my primary who immediately called the endocrinologist so that all the doctors (heart, lung, thyroid, primary) involved could speak about everything in a whole. After the heart and lung doctors had heard they decided they better bring in a thoracic surgeon into the picture because the lymph nodes in my chest have been enlarged through out my diagnosis with sarcoidosis and never went back down to normal. Thyroid cancer uses the lymph nodes to travel and spread to the rest of the body. They (lung, heart, and primary doctors) had thought they were enlarged due to the sarcoidosis and would eventually come down (like my heart did as it was enlarged in the beginning too) through the treatment with the prednisone. The thoracic surgeon is going to biopsy the lymph nodes in my chest while I'm under having my thryroid removed.
So, that's the story...I see the surgeons on Tuesday. I'll get my surgery date then. I'm very scared. Thiis has been one hell of a year. :'(

life sucks sometimes. all this on one nice lady, i know if you read my other threads i come off as a sexist pig, but i really have a huge heart for people doing it tough, i think we all take our health for granted, i pray that laura gets better real quick and effortlessly, its easy to say "stay positive" when its not you that suffering, im sure its stressful for both laura and michael, but you guys have our support, and in my Prayers..and i actually do pray...believe it or not.

keep an open mind to alternative cancer therapies.
I have not kept up with alternative cancer therapies , but I know the gerson therapy has been very successfull for many incurable forms that western medicine gave no hope for.
If I recall correctly ,the base of the therapy is built around rebuilding the liver which takes 18 months to complete.

I went to the thyroid surgeons today as you know. Came home not feeling well. He had to spray stuff into my nose and throat so he could slide a camera down to my voice box from my nose. That stuff, plus the medication that i took for the anxiety and all the collected information I received regarding what's going on made me very nauseous. Then I had to drive up to the hospital that I had my CAT Csans done and pick up the images and reports for both surgeons to review (they want to review the chest lymph nodes in the film). The surgeon I saw today is going to call the thoracic surgeon and organize the plan. The plan thus far (as explained to me by this surgeon) is that he will go in through a 6" slice in the fold of my neck and remove the thyroid and lymph nodes in my neck and send them off to the lab for testing (this will decipher how much radioactive treatment I will need after the surgery). He explained the risks of damaging my parathyroid glands (if damaged I would be on high dosages of calcium for the rest of my life..not that bad) and the nerves in my neck that control your voice, swallowing and breathing. He also explained the risk of coming out with a tracheotomy if the nerves are torn or cut which can happen (niiiiiice :-\ ). He then said after the removal of the thyroid and lymph nodes in my neck, the thoracic surgeon would then go through his opening and down behind my breast bone to collect some lymph nodes from my chest for the biopsy. If there are any complications from that (say the surgeon can get to the nodes, or he does get to them and they come back from the lab and show cancer) my chest would need to be cut open, but is hoping it won't be the case.
So, as it stands right now, this surgeon wants to do this asap, so he's calling the thoracic today. I will see the thoracic on Thursday and will most likely he will tell me (after speaking with the surgeon I saw today) what day I'm going in.
Needless to say, I am a nervous wreck and not thinking very well. So please excuse me for any typos or if something doesn't make any sense. I just want this to be done and over and everything good again. :-\
Thanks everybody for all your prayers, well wishes and support. They really do help. And I truly appreciate you all. :-*
-
will continue. love you :-*

Surgery is set for August 12. There will be both the ENT surgeon and Thoracic surgeon doing the surgery. Next week will be filled with pre-op testing, mri on thyroid and final doctor visits.

Awe, Laura.... sorry to hear that so much still lies ahead for you on this.
But I will continue to Pray for you. Tell Mike to keep rubbing those feet!

I had a big thyroid tumor years ago that turned out to be okay - lost half my thyroid gland though.
She SHOULD be ok. Most of these ones turn out ok.
One thing though... you'll wake up with the sorest neck after the surgery. they throw your head back a long way during the surgery.
-
im so sorry to hear this Luara. i will pray for you tonight when i go to bed and will be the day of your surgery.
stay positive girl and you know your getbig family is behind you!! :)

Thanks jwb. Unfortunately we already know my thyroid has cancer, they will be taking the whole thing out along with the lymph nodes in my neck. The big question or scare is whether is has traveled into the lymph nodes in my chest. If it was contained in my neck then everything should be fine, if not...well, I don't want to really think about it. :-\
And Thanks blinky! :D I like that..."getbig family" ;D

I want to thank Jedi :-* for thinking enough about me to join up with 240 and create the donation plug for me.
I'm sure in the process they didn't realize the outcome would be greater to me than it is. Although no one has actually donated, lol, which is fine by me...I explained to Jedi that I really didn't need any money, the posts in this thread and the one on the G&O board mean so much more to me than anything. Each post opens my heart and gives me that much more strength (even with a tear in my eye) to not let this disease get the best of me and keep on fighting. And although the thought of the surgery scares the crap outta me, the support of all you people who I've come to look forward to playing with online each day...my getbig family...helps ease my mind as the day gets closer.
Thank you all... :-*

Jedi's a sweetheart! :-*

I am so very sorry. I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma (stage III), so I understand how you feel. Be strong and believe that you will be healed.
My uncle had that, stage IV along with melanoma and something else. When he was diagnosed, it was too late. He passed shortly after diagnosis (they had to do some other surgery on him prior to them knowing about the cancer and when they opened him up they saw it...that was how bad it was...they stopped the surgery right then and closed him up. There was nothing they could do, he was riddled with it.) His sister...my mother, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 2 and 1/2 years ago, was given 6-8 months and only survived 4. The last sibling...my aunt, was diagnosed with breast cancer 4 months after my mother had passed, received a massectamy, then found it had traveled to her brain. She is still battling it. The tumors have shrunk with chemo, but they are still working on them. Seems like my mother's side of the family has had a lot of cancers, :'( all different though which is weird. :-\

Stella: I think for a week, maybe a little more. I was told I would lose a lot of week in a short period of time. lol I'll be skinny-fat! :D
CQ: No not a crisis...a CRIME! :o lol. My sister is coming down tomorrow and I would have liked to go out for Mojito's. But nooooooooooooooooooooooo o, Laura can't have any alcohol. >:(
Princess L: ROFLMAO!!!!!!!! Those were great. Thank you for keeping me in your prayers. My kids are doing ok. To tell you the truth, I haven't laid it all out on them as it is. I kept it very simple and tried to make it seem less than it is so they don't worry as much. My sister works in medicine so it's kinda hard to make anything seem "light" to her because she either already knows, or knows how to research on it, and she has a big mouth and tells my dad everything, lol. That's why they are coming down.

Hey Laura,
Wishing you the best buddy! Thoughts and prayers to you and Mike!

yikes!!! I've been out of the loop on all this. Sorry that you have had to go through this Laura. You seem to have a great attitude about it. Hope your recovery goes well!
-
SO glad to hear that the surgery went well Laura!!
Thanks for the texts while you were HIGH!! ;D
Love you!
-
there is a huge cancer treatment repository on mind and muscle with tons of peer reviewed research i can summarize, help with if needed. Simple supplements that have all kinds of positive effects on cancer.
just an offer, for instance simply do a cursory search on beta glucan or lacttoferrin and there possible anti tumor, anti angiogenic etc.. effects. cheap without interaction. Pm me if you want some research etc... as i have collected quite a bit of cancer research.
either way hopefully you make a full recovery and do everything in your power to avoid remission, take the second chance at health very serious, i once had a couple scares and it only made me stronger.
-
Needless to say, I am a nervous wreck and not thinking very well. So please excuse me for any typos or if something doesn't make any sense. I just want this to be done and over and everything good again. :-\

Best of luck to you!
My dad also has sarcoidosis.

I had my first follow up yesterday. The doc took out the drainage tube from my chest. It was awful (thought I was going to pass out), but I made it. He said they were able to remove all the cancer and that it had not spread further than the thyroid and nodes in my neck (which were all taken out). So the chest is clear!!! No chemo!!! I do have to get radioactive iodine treatment, but that's pretty simple (just can't be around people for 4 days…Mike's gonna love that, lol). I'm on a ton of meds right now, but I'm getting blood work done every couple days to see how they will level me out. I thought I was done with needles, :( Anyway, I guess the hard part is over and recovery is just around the corner. :)
Thanks everyone! :-*

Aww, thank Racq. Yes, you have been mia for a bit. The doc's believe they got all the cancer out. Now I just gotta heal and work on the sarcoidosis. Hopefully this will be the last medical problem I have to deal with. 8 continuous months of fighting different health issues (heart, lungs, thyroid)...I think I deserve a break, lol. :) My medication is crazy. 13 pills in the morning, 3 in the afternoon and then 6 at bedtime. I still have a problem swallowing so I have to take each one...one by one, with the water.... I end up taking enough to make me full, lol.
Anyway, thank you my sweet. Hope all has been well with you.
Love,
~me

Ya, as his outgoing message started to play, I got an incoming call from the UK, so I flipped the line over to catch it before it went into voicemail. When I flipped back, it had already disconnected.

Wow !!! what an amazing saga on the Girly Board. Live from the Operating table even.
Glad I logged on after a few months. Isn't the internet awesome ?
Obviously I find it slightly if not extremely weird that anyone would want to post pix and messages from their hospital bed and attempt to find comfort in that, but anyways...
Laura,
I'm pleased to hear that you've only got a little scar which won't show and that you'll be well...
you can wear a nice scarf.

Whats so weird about it?, she has thousands of supporters who were interested in seeing how she was. There was even a thread about it on the main board. Laura is a very sweet person who was faced with a very scary incident.

Lol, I wouldn't say thousands. Don't mind Linda, Jedi, she doesn't realize that you can have lots of friends on here and that there are a lot of really good caring people here (that most of those who act bad...really aren't bad).
Linda, just as an fyi, you talk about all the hate and whatnot on this board, but during my illness, my postings and updates from the point of my diagnosis of cancer to my surgery to remove it, brought a lot of good qualities out of many getbiggers. The majority of posters on this site have been here for a long long time. Have gone through several screen names (but it always comes out who is/was who at some point, lol). And we might all mess around on here but in the end, we are a weird kind of family and do care about each other (even if we dislike them, lol). When something happens to one of us, we genuinely care and do our best to support each other. I would hardly call that "slightly if not extremely weird". I would call it "human".
-
You're right and I'm wrong and I apologise if necessary. I've frequently been extremely rude and real, bordering on horrid here (and often sarcastic beyond anyones' comprehension) and perhaps deserved to be put in my place.
So I'm perhaps somewhat awe-struck by the huge support and love you've garnered by posting a blow-by-blow account of your struggle with (and defeat of?) a life-changing and -threatening health problem. I now realise that the love and support of your "Getbig Family" will surely have helped you during the most incredibly difficult times you've recently coped with.
Glad I logged back in to see what was happening here...
I just know that I would not be able to post a daily overview of a battle with cancer as I'd be too worried and screwed up obsessing, fearing I'd lose. But I haven't a clue really as I've fortunately never had to deal with anything half as scary... So Bravo ! I salute your enormous bravery.
I take my hat off to you and bow
You are the undisputed Queen and King of Getbigland...
xLinda
but ps: The only people who constantly spewed abuse and hatred at me without a sense of humour here were you and Mike, I thought I'd put that straight. flower/weed was hilarious, so I enjoyed her mad attacks. The rest, all the blokes, were just daft. And as for Ron, he's been simply splendid...
But that no longer matters, I now understand most if not all of the background, including the previous history. It now makes sense that you'd be horrid to me when I previously queried your fan club (and Mike's !!!, that one is even funnier). I guess I attempted to take up the challenge when you hurled abuse at me and I ended up instead taking the mickey... In future I'll try always to walk away, hopefully unharmed, when your family goes nasty and plays dirty.
Anyways, take care and relax if you are able. You are much loved and so many are praying for your speedy and complete recovery.
It was Arvilla that pissed me off, not you. I got seriously upset when (on top of everything you've had to cope with,) you had to stick up for his awful behaviour, that's all.
with mad love from London

It now makes sense that you'd be horrid to me when I previously queried your fan club (and Mike's !!!, that one is even funnier). I guess I attempted to take up the challenge when you hurled abuse at me and I ended up instead taking the mickey... In future I'll try always to walk away, hopefully unharmed, when your family goes nasty and plays dirty.
Linda, it's stuff like this that is going to get you banned again. Please refrain and no one will feel goaded into responding in kind.
Thanks :)

Linda, you need to learn not to take everything posted on here as so personal. I know it's hard. Believe me, I was in your spot many times on this board. If you play into it, you become a bigger victim. But also know that if you insult on here there will be many that will jump on the opposite bandwagon and slam you back...and there are some very good slammers here, lol.
No one here "hates" you and we didn't go out to attack you either. We understand you have a different way of expressing yourself (your long posts/rants) and had explained on several accounts that they came across as ramblings and asked you to make sense or "shorten" the ramblings. Your writing styles definitely differ from most on here and you know it. We, the board, joked about it and you retaliated and started with personal attacks on my hair and body, and a lot of backwards compliments.
I posted my "blow by blow" account of my struggle because I do consider a lot of the members here my friends and they too have their own stories to tell and although you might think they are just "horrid" people with nothing but hate...they are not, they are human. 99% of those here really do care about other members and express so. Even those who want to known as "hard guys" will at the very least send a PM stating their concerns and well wishes. And if you took a minute to check the other boards, you would notice that me posting my battle brought a lot of those "hard guys" out and showed that they are in fact only human. You stated that you wouldn't be able to post a daily overview of a battle with cancer, but for me, it made it a lot easier to deal with.
Anyway, I hope that with this post you get a better understanding of both the board and the people that post here, and maybe allow you to be able to contribute to it more positively and enjoyably.

nice way to ruin a beautiful thread
(someone has cancer and Linda still comes in here and throws out "shots")

Anyone coming in this thread with any crap needs to shove off.
Now, nor this thread are the time.
99.9 % of this board supports Laura to no end, most of us have posted with her for years, chatted behind the scenes, she is not just a "screenname" to us - and this is serious stuff.
So, piss off with anything that isn't positive.

CQ is right, If you do not support Laura and Mike just Fu$% off, we dont need negativity, Laura, Quicker has been praying for you, never met you, most likely will never meet you but I do not like to see people sick, even if they are cyber-buddies

Laura, how about an update please? Is the hair growing in, how are you feeling, are you off the prednisone? When do you go in to get tested again (if you do)? :-*

Weird that you asked today Stella. I went for my follow-up blood work today. We shall know in a few days how that went. My hair is growing back and better too. I feel really good for the most part. When I drop the prednisone each week I have a day of yucky. I'm down to 2.5mg a day now and my last pill will be next Monday! Then I'll be off of them!!!! YAYYYYYY. Hopefully for good!
Thank you for being such a love! :-*

And of course the lovely Laura has my best wishes as usual... :-*

bump for the bloodwork update!

:)

Blood work came back pretty good. My cholesterol is back to fabulous, doc thinks last time when it showed extremely high...must have been an error. Liver enzymes are more normal (I'm finally off the prednsone for now). Something did test high, which showed the Sarcoidosis is still active in my body, so we can only see what happens from there. I may have to go to a Rheumatologist next for life long treatment. Kidneys have some kind of crystals in them so now I'm on a low oxalate diet...which kinda interferes with doing a prep. >:( But all in all...my doc said it was good.

Thanks for the update and good to hear that the results mean good things overall dweetir :-*
