Title: 2008 NPC Nationals Prejudging Review & Pics
Post by: Lift Studios on November 21, 2008, 08:30:18 PM
How I saw the show go down.

Supers - The show looks like it belongs to Nunn but props to Atoyan for being at what looks to be his all-time best. Steve Kuclo also brought his best and will be in a top five spot. At 23 years old Steve showed loads of potential. Tre Brewer looks tons better than Jr. Nationals with a much more stream-lined physique.

Heavyweights - It looks like a battle between Alvisi, Liberatore and Huh. I'd actually give the nod to Jason Huh as he has a better back than Liberatore. Alvisi looked like he has better shape and in better conditioning than Liberatore. Liberatore will most likely take the class though.

Light-Heavy - Peter Putnam will take this class but he was far from his best. He had the worst tanning in the whole show as he was turning green in spots. He did get harder as he posed and has great wheels. Peter will most likely breathe a sigh of relief tomorrow as he was able to be good enough to beat the others. Ron Avidan feels Al Auguste took the class by a bit over Peter. Al Auguste looks to be in the runner-up spot with Chulsey Graham in third. I'd go Darrell Terrell fourth.

Middleweight - I have Guy Cisternino winning this class with Jeff Cook in second. Ronald Torres in third and Kam Gallman fourth.

Welterwight - I have Jocelyn Jean in first and JB Bartlett in second. Theodore Atkins in third. Atkins has a ton of potential and watch out for this guy in the future. Mark Ritter in fourth and Kevin Ofurum in fifth.

Lightweight could go between Marvin Ward and Leonardo Racheco.

Marvin Ward first easy.  I think this guy Torres in the MW class, but it is hard to beat one of Dave's guys.

You can always count on most of these guys screwing up at the last minute by using diuretics insulin and improper carb up. Amazing that these guys never learn. Sean and Troy look terrible and I am at a loss as to why Putnam looks so bad.  ???

I don't understand how these guys spend so much time, effort and money on BBing, yet screw up royally at contest time.  Honestly, I think quite a few of these people don't know how to THINK for themselves and just do whatever their "guru" tells them.

What exactly are the responsibilities for a contest prep guru anyway?

All kidding aside it is a huge responsibility. You sometimes hold the guys win in your very actions. You tell them what to eat drink and so forth.  Funny thins is I if I am actually at the show I usually would lose about 5 to 7 pounds over the weekend from nerves.  ;D

Anybody have an idea who was advising Kevin Levrone when he won the Nationals in 1992?

Unfortunately for Alex he won't make the top 5. He's more like 8-9th. He was in a tough class and genetically he just doesn't have it to contend. He also wasn't as sharp with his conditioning has he was in his preview photos or even last night at weigh-ins.

Ed Nunn is my pick for the overall. Tiny waist, great conditioning and if he has a weakness it would be his chest but he's the best guy in the show. Steve showed great promise at only 23 years old. If he can add more detail to his back and come in a bit sharper from behind he'll be tough to beat.

Damn, genetics aside his best conditioning which unfortunately is always in the gym would have put him in the running I would think, too bad.

His conditioning was off at the show but the top 5 guys packed a good deal more muscle. He improved from his showing last year though.

Tre showed definite improvement from Jr. Nationals and was much, much lighter.

I'm at a loss for words. Is there anyone else in this show that looks good and if so why all this pics of putnam and Allen? Not only is Putnam's conditiong off, but from the rear he honestly looks like he couldn't place in a local show.

Trey looks bad too. Sad things is these guys will look so much better in a couple of days anfter drinking some fluids and eating some sodium. If I were Trey and Sean I would do just that cause they have nothing to loose at this point.

WTF????  He was SHREDDED last week...If you are in shape the Sunday before the show there is no excuse for not looking the same the day of the show.  Carb loading, insulin, diuretics....Keep it simple

Guys make drastic changes to try to get a drastic result.  Sodium deplete then load, dropping water, increasing carbs, using slin and diuretics. It's nuts. Everyone wants the golden formula when all they need to do is to keep doing what they have been doing that made them look so great a week before the show.

I never understood the hype behind Putnum.  He looks awful at this show.  I still cannot understand why he ever got a Flex magazine cover?  If he wins his division I will never again watch another NPC show.  It will be the biggest political scam ever laid on us by the NPC.

Ed Nunn.....the future of this sport.

Putnam is a blonde haired, blue eyed guy with a very attractive wife who happens to be an IFBB figure competitor.  Unfortunately, some people think these are more important qualities than the guy having a physique worthy of being a pro.

Congrats to Edward Nunn on winning the overall at the nationals …

Jeff Long seems to be doing worse … even though he pax some sick amount of muscle considering he is around 5’5”

Still can’t figure out what is so impressive about Putnam (except Jessica) … my vote would have definitely gone to Auguste

Foster and ward … pro card … cant see that going any where

Ed Nunn looked fantastic, Liberatore looked ok, and the guy who finished second to him looked good as well.

But overall this was a very dissapointing nationals. I saw more flabby asses, loose skin, and chubby faces than I do at the line at the local dairy queen. Its like conditioning doesnt even matter anymore.

And dont get me started on the guys who looked good one week out and looked like shit on the day of the show. Its rediculous.

And one last thing, I think about every 1 out of 5 competitors had gyno!! thats rediculous.

What a shitty shitty show!

I agree with that and he has a great overall classic line to his physique. Having said that I suspect he just squeeked by as his conditioning was not 100% on. It was close, but his win was legit in my opinion.

With all due respect to you Howard (since we have chatted in person).... I don't think anyone here agrees with you.  I don't see anything "classic about his lines"?  No physique can be that classic with such a weak back?  And I'm not "hating" on Putnum since I don't know him in person (and heard he is a nice guy) .... but his physique was not worthy of a pro card win in a weak division.  Just seems everyone agree's Auguste had the better package?

I feel kinda bad for Putnum.  He has certainly looked better before and by all accounts he is a nice guy.  But the point is he wasn't the best in that division.  And so I think decisions like this set bodybuilding back ... which is something it can ill-afford right now.
