Title: Match of the Day
Post by: mass 04 on January 19, 2009, 08:37:10 AM
I'm going to try to post a new classic match every day. This is one of my favorites of the recent era. TLC 2 at Wrestlemania 17

Good shit, man. Those TLC matches were insane. And of course, Savage vs Steamboat, classic stuff!

Tbh, I always thought Savage v. Ricky was a little overrated. An awesome match, but not the best all time like some would call it. I know people like it though, so that's why i put it up.

I think it was great for it's time. Remember, at that time all the big stiffs were top of the card (Hogan, Andre, and the like). So to see these two guys do arial moves, was pretty impressive back them.

EDIT:

BTW, I would NEVER call this the best match of all time. No way. It might make a top 100 list....

Awesome match!  I've always liked Shane's commitment in the ring.  It would've been easy for him to stay behind the scenes, but he got in there and gave it his all.

I was never a mark for either of these guys, but this often overlooked match had some strong spots, told a good story, and had an entertaining ending.

They took some hard bumps as well, considering they were only working on a thin little mat.

I'm including this because it is the best 'fro vs. 'fro match ever seen, and it's one of my favorite juice shots ever caught on film.

Check out when Brody kicks Superfly in the head at 4:25.
While selling on all fours, you can see Snuka ditch the blade in his trunks - which isn't bad at all.
It's when he gets up at 4:34 and the blood just "squirts" from his head and literally sprays across his brachial & anterior delt.

Even Tarantino could never recreate the perfection in that shot with all of Hollywood's magic!

A lot of guys from the 60's-80's used tiny pockets that were sewn inside the waistband of their trunks as a means of disposing a dirty blade after the act.
Suffice to say that, anytime you see a wrestler with his hand down his pants during a match (unless it's Pat Patterson), that's probably what he's doing.

I've also seen footage of guys stuffing them into their (or their opponent's) trunks, kneepad...even a turnbuckle pad, although I can't recall at the moment exactly who that was.
Triple H once juiced during a match and simply kept the blade in his closed fist.
I'm not sure why; it looked kind of strange that he kept his fist clenched for the last 3-4 minutes of the match.

In the match where Curt Hennig defeated Nick Bockwinkle for the AWA title, you can tell Bockwinkle stole (retrieved) his blade from the tape on his wrist.
The camera didn't catch the steal, but a lengthy end of the tape was left dangling; a dead give-away as to the blade's origins.
Even worse was that, as Nick was cutting himself, a fan towards center frame noticed the act and began signaling in no uncertain terms to EVERYONE in the audience - and watching at home - that Nick was doing the deed.

Christ, that would be pretty dangerous. Imagine they took a bad bump with that blade in their trunk pocket hole and it stabbed themselves inevitably.

I may have mentioned this in another thread, but…

IMO, the “safest” (while not always practical) way to blade is to use a somewhat newer method:
The dangerous part is completed prior to going out.

Using a mirror, good light, a freshly sanitized razor, and other amentities not available in the ring, you carefully cut your forehead in the desired location/manner.
You next apply a dab of New-Skin liquid Band-Aid over the incision.
If you want, you can even put makeup over the New-Skin to really touch it up.

Now, you go out, get hit, and - while selling - you simply open the wound, which is quite easily accomplished using the base of your palm, or wrist, etc.
It’s nice for use in a promo or early in the match, but may not hold up to wrestling for a substantial length.

I wonder if anyone in the WWE has ever bladed this way. Seems easier rather than doing it in the ring with an actual blade for a lesser experienced guy.

Hey Mont, In the Savage vs Hogan match at WM5, do you think Hogan really bladed himself? If you watch the match, he was already cut prior to bending over and getting kicked in the head where he sold the cut. I couldn't catch Hogan actually blading there so i'm wondering if maybe it was an accident.

I'd have to watch it again.
I've got a second generation VHS of it somewhere in my basement, but I've never really "studied" any Hogan matches - no offense to the "big dude upstairs." :)

The forehead is very vascular & thin-skinned, so it‘s quite possible that Hulkster was legitimately busted open.
Sometimes, an old cut would inadvertently open on a guy during a match, but I doubt this was the case here since blading was not common practice in WWF - even house shows - at that time.

A few years later, it seemed like a lot of guys got juice during their high-profile matches.
Hogan bladed during his Mania feud with Slaughter,  Bret juiced in his Mania I-C match with Piper, and Flair got LOTS of color that same night against Savage (they also got hell for it, too, afterwards).

If you have the WM5 footage handy, watch it again and pay close attention to maybe the last 2 or 3 things the camera caught before the blood was noticeable.
Oftentimes, you can catch it, but not always.

I heard that Bret was legitamtely busted open at WM8 but Flair's was a blade job.

Okay, maybe I’m mistaken.
I thought that, in his book, Bret confessed to blading in his match with Piper.

IIRC, he was quite pleased with himself because his juice looked legit and only Flair & Savage were reprimanded afterwards.
This was during one of those times when WWF brass was very much against blood in matches - moreso than usual.

Quite interesting that ECW alumnus Steve Austin had never done the deed until his Mania submission match with Bret a few years later.
Austin was so green about the whole thing that Bret supposedly did everything from concealing the blade to the actual cutting.

And, to answer your question from two posts ago, I believe that Hogan used the New-Skin method in a WWF promo shortly after his first post-WCW comeback.

You've got to log a lot of hours watching matches to get good at spotting things like blading.
It's probably best to start with "slightly" easier instances like this:

The physique of c. 1982 Superfly was phenomenal!
I suspect a lot of that look was from hormone use, though, because his build fluctuated quite dramatically within fairly short time spans.

I posted this in another thread last Dec, but it really deserves to be in a sticky.

I saw that awhile back, love it.  Hansen was a bad mofo.....always enjoyed his work.  Vader proved that he ain't no joke in the toughness dept either.

Thanks for posting that, man...AWESOME!!!!

I had no idea that footage existed.
I've often wondered what guys like Steamboat & Snuka would have looked like in contest shape with max effort.

Superfly looked phenomenal, but I noticed they didn't give a measurement for his waist onstage.

Not me but I will say that those two are amazing performers with a phenomenal NCAA wrestling background. Stupid move by WWE letting them go. They would have been a great cocky heel team IMO. Didn't they sign with TNA?

I kept hearing that they wanted to...
Then, they were supposed to...
Then, they were close to...
But - although I haven't watched a show in several months - I still don't see their names on the TNA roster.

I can't BELIEVE neither of the "big two" has picked these guys up!!

Kings of Wrestlig aren't no slouches, either.

Angle was supposedly licking his chops at the possibility of working with them again in TNA.

They (at least WWE) have already utilized it. Benjamin won the tag titles and the IC title at least twice. He was the official crash dummy in the WrestleMania Money-in-the-Bank matches. And his 2006 feud with RVD, culminating with a "Winner-Take-All" match (RVD's Money-in-the-Bank briefcase vs. Benjamin's IC title) was great.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl5yRmEuJ_8

Haas won another tag title with Rico (the gay thing with those two ran for a little while). Having Haas mimick other wrestlers was also hilarious.

Gotcha.

I swear that the Carolina’s were the best place to be a wrestling fan in the 80’s - being exposed to all of those different products between Georgia, Florida, Memphis, etc.
The Northwest/North-central was also a hotbed with AWA running their shows and the strong crossover of realistic Canadian workers.

I was caught in the middle: the NorthEast.
My region was the original WWWF territory, and so by the time Vince Jr. took over, the WWF was pretty much all we had.

Eventually, we found NWA and AWA on some of the cable stations.
And I think somebody picked up Todd Gordon’s Eastern Championship Wrestling, but it was on at some goofy-ass hour.

For a long time, my primary exposure to life outside WWF-land was through the wrestling mags.

Same with me with the addition of Stampede Wrestling for obvious reasons. They only aired Mid-Atlantic stuff at 3am in the morning over here. I think it was in 1986 that they finally started airing AWA and NWA / Mid-Atlantic product on saturday afternoons here.

Yup, it would have been nice. Right now I get Classic Wrestling once in a while on one of the channels on the Bell Express view satellite dish and sometime you get some good classic stuff. Barron Von Rachki matches, older Road Warriors matches, Stan Hansen matches, etc.

What's funny, though, is that despite being basically enhancement talent for most of his career, Lanny is better off financially than many guys who worked much bigger programs and made more money.
I think his biggest run was as "The Genious," and it sounds like most guys didn't want to work with him because they thought it would relegate them.

I don't know if Hennig was one of those people, but I always wondered why they paired those two.
Curt benefitted from having Heenan - as did anyone - but I don't think he needed any help getting over from guys like Lanny and The Coach.

I remember watching that Mania at my cousin's house.

From the memoirs of an 8 year-old:

Rick Martel & Tom Zenk opened the show against two Canadian guys who didn't have action figures.
The midgets all turned on Bundy in the mixed tag match.
Hacksaw Duggan & Iron Scheik set up an awesome feud that was sure to last until WM IV.
Steamboat's throat was all better, and he beat that asshole Savage.
The Predator trailor that indicated Jesse Ventura would be the next Arnold for sure.
Hulk (gasp) beat evil Andre, and at 8, I really thought several times he might not.
Who the fcuk is Bob Uecker?

As a kid, that's what I remembered from & thought of WrestleMania III.

Yeah, they claimed 93,173, and from some of those shots, I believe it.
Supposedly, Joey Marella said to Hogan & Andre during the match something to the effect, "Can you believe this? This is incredible!"

I'm really surprised Vince ran that stadium again for - what was it - WM 23?
He had to have known he wouldn't sell the place out that year.
During the Attitude years, maybe/likely, but not when he did.

WrestleMania is SUPPOSED TO SELL OUT...period.

I remember a Jake Roberts interview where he said riding to the ring, Alice Cooper was gasping for air saying he's never been in an atmosphere like that. 23 was at Ford Field. You and me both. It was the craziest crowd I have ever seen. Even Jesse was looking around and said to Gorilla, "Look at all these people". There will never be an era like the late eighties boom. No way Jose. Monty stated that WM is supposed to sell out, period. He's right, and WM3 was a HUGE sellout.

What  don't understand is why the hell did they have WM4 & 5 back to back in the same venue?

I thought the Radicalz was a GREAT angle, and I looked so forward to where it would lead.
I became disappointed very fast.
You and me both. I thought that was a great faction. What an awesome score for WWE. Bringing in Saturn, Benoit, Guererro and Malenko from WCW. All phenomenal wrestlers in their own way.

Aside from having some of my favorite workers, this match stands out as being one of the BEST examples of why Tony Shiavonne sucks hairy sack as an announcer.
Listen to his commentary at 0:55

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VR9SMTgprV4

"You know what’s been great about this match, guys, is we have seen these two teams repeatedly try to win the match."

Really, Tony?
Really?
I’ve never seen a match in which anybody tried to WIN!
How unusual.
You don't see matches like that often.

I liked the Twin Towers. Bossman was so athletic and got even better once he dropped some weight.

Yeah.
Kurt turned out INCREDIBLE! I really had doubts as to how well he would transition; not many "real" fighters do.
And, if you can look past the whole double-murder/suicide thing, Benoit was one of the greatest to ever lace up a pair of boots.

These guys had some phenomenally classic matches.
Some observers prefer their Royal Rumble match to this one, but this remains my favorite - especially the beginning.

Kevin Nash/Diesel wins the WWF Heavyweight Title from Bob Backlund in an eight-second non-televised match:

While you can't really see it in this fan-shot footage, Backlund performed the ultimate display of class in putting over the new champ: after taking Nash's power-bomb, Backlund sold the move by literally crawling back to the dressing room. In interviews years later, Nash would fondly recall Bob's performance that night, expressing his gratitude for what Bob did for him.

I wonder how much Nash appreciated it at the time.

This one, or the Storm/Candido match at the top of the page?
I hope you got to see the latter before Youtube removed it.

I'll scan Dailymotion.com to see if it's there.
I swear that "stinger81" has posted every third match taken place since 1988. (lol)

What stands out to me in this match is how these two teams actually look like teams, i.e. they look like they've extensively trained and worked together (because they have).
My point is, they function as a well-oiled unit as opposed to two random guys being paired up because "creative" doesn't know what else to do with them.

As was the norm for that time, the Cruiserweights had some of the best matches in WCW.
I forget the name of the package/roll-up Ultimo uses at the end, but it's a pretty little move to watch, and he executes it with great timing:
