It's the offseason....this board will never die. It's basically a place of ten or twelve dudes who love sports. I dig it. Me, You, Earl, Guts, Beach, Pump, Mal, Steele, 2ND COming, BFury Calvin and others are "regulars"

LOL i know dude, just kidding around.

I'm having a hard time with the AL East. If all remain healthy, Yanks/Rays/Sox should only be within a handful of games of one another.
It's going to be a wild ride.

Very true. Although our catcher Matt Weiters has terrific upside. We have above-average starting outfielders in Markakis, Adam Jones, and Luke Scott.
Respectable infielding with Mora at 3B, Roberts at 2B, and Huff at 1B.
But as always.....our starting pitching looks horrendous.

Don't forget Markakis....
Weiters was considered the hot prospect pick in many fantasy BB drafts this year. I missed out on him, when someone ahead of me drafted him in the round I was going to grab him.
Coincidently, though, I also have Mora and Roberts.
At least you can't feel too bad about the Bedard deal. He's been a real flop so far for Seattle, and Baltimore got a good haul for him.

Baltimore Orioles......
162-0 regular season.
They are 1/162 of the way there.
Funny how when ESPN's little graphic was rolling this morning, the Orioles' 10-5 bitch-slapping of NY was about halfway down the list. Had the Yankees won, it would have been the first score listed, and ESPN would have pre-ordained the 2009 Yankees as possibly the greatest team in the history of sports.
-
WHITE SOX WIN IT ALL THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ESPN has been pretty anti-Yankee for years now. They've been all over the red sox, since they're in Bristol, and many of them are sox fans.
-
I dont agree with you on that at all. Most of the guys in Bristol are Yankees and Giants fans. Bristol is much more Yankees country than Sox country. Anything past east Hartford is Yankees country by a mile. Most all of the guys on ESPN like the Yankees, the Giants or the Jets. Greenie from Mike and Mike comes to mind off the top of my head.
People hate the Yankees because 1.) they win a lot, 2.) the spend obscene amounts of money and lose 3.) Drama with the players 4.) the whole haircut thing is foolish to me, imo.
And due to shit like this:

I didn't forget about Markakis, I mentioned him in the last post. The Orioles finally signed one of their own to a long term deal. I honestly can't remember the last time the Orioles signed one of their own players to a big extension like they did with Markakis. I look at this as a positive sign that this once proud franchise is finally moving in the right direction. I fully expect 30-35 HR's and 120 RBI's and at least a .300 BA out of him. That Bedard trade worked out great. Adam Jones looks like a keeper.
on another note, fuck Mark Teixera! He's a greedy little bitch for taking the Yankees offer over his hometown Orioles. The Yankees will never win shit anytime soon. A team with no heart and driven by the almighty dollar. Sabathia looked like a fat overpaid turd out there on opening day. six earned runs and ZERO strikeouts.
-

This is stupid. What did the Orioles offer? Did they outbid the Nats or the Red Sox? Did they even put in a legitimate number.
Why would any star player want to play for that perennial loser? If they were willing to spend huge money on Teixeira, where did it go when they missed out? Abreu? Dunn? Lowe? Nope, no offers to anyone of impact. Why would anyone want to play in front of their hometown crowd when their fans let opposing fan bases like the red sox' take over their stadium when their team is in town?
The fact is Angelos is perfectly content to collect his Washington Nationals money and put it in his pocket.
And saying the Yankees have no heart is pure fanboi mentality.
-
I'm not a Yanks fan, but with Jeter, Matsui, Rivera, Posada etc.. they have "heart".

The Orioles offered 7 years, 140 million. The Yankees offered 8 years 160 million. Yeah, the Orioles suck every year but signing a talent like that could have only been a step in the right direction. The Orioles needed a first baseman. What other marquee 1B free agents were out there to sign?? The rest of the starting outfield and infield are already set so that answers your question as to why they didn't go after anyone else. The Orioles will have no problems scoring runs this year. Like every year, it comes down to the starting pitching, not the offense. They scored 10 runs yesterday, right?
As far as out of town Red Sox and Yankee fans coming to the games...let me just put it out there that a large majority of those so-called fans don't travel to Orioles home games from their respective cities. Most of them are little faggy bandwagon jumpers that live locally around the area. If I see another Yankee douchebag fan with gold chains and cock-eyed ball cap at an Orioles game, I'll punch him in face and dedicate it to you. :-*
And yes, the Yankees have no heart. They're just a team that plugs holes every year with big name free agents and trades at the expense of their farm system. Why do you think they're annually MLB's oldest team?
-
It sucks. Baltimore is a great baseball town, i went there in 96 when the team was competitive and it was a great palce to watch a game. They have a good nucleus with Roberts, Markakis, Jones, Weiters (sp?), Pie..

I like the Dodgers, i just don't know if they have the pitching. I don't know why picked SF lol maybe the young pitchers. I think LA should take a run at Pedro.

It can be safely said, that NO Yankee or Redsox fans were as prevelant at Orioles home games back in those years(mid 90's) like today. Nothing compared like today.
Gee, I wonder if has anything to do with the fact that the Yankees and Red Sox have won 6 World Series titles since then as a reason for so many of their fans coming to O's games now. ::)
Everybody loves a winner....But I stand by my hometown ball club and I always will. ;)

Nothing against Boston fans. They have a great allegiance to their team and always did, even well before they won the Series in '04. Shit, I was rooting for them to break the jinx. That Yankees 7 game comeback win in the ALCS is one of the greatest series of all time. A classic.
But the Yankees and the vast majority of their fans?? Fuck 'em.
Seriously....Fuck 'em!

I totally support punching the gold chain wearing guido Yankee fan.
I just don't think it's fair to rip Teixeira for not going to a losing franchise with a weak fan base, especially when there's 40 million more on the table, an new stadium, CC Sabathia, etc. It would take somebody really special to try to be the face of a franchise that has no guarantee that the ownership will do anything different than they've done the past 10 years.
Adam Dunn was available for 1b, and he went to the Nats for 2/20, late in the offseason. But, even if you think their IF and OF are set, they still could've went after Lowe. Penny, Smoltz, etc. They didn't do anything, and their projected staff proves it. Guthrie was their opening day starter. Yes, they won. That happens, but do you have any doubt how it will play out over the course of a season? I know you don't. I don't blame Teixeira at all for not wanting to go there.
As Mass 04 said, the heart comment doesn't play. As for age, the Yankees pitching staff is 23, 28, 28, 31, and 37. 1b is 28. 2b is 26. CF.....etc. That's hardl old. Yes, they have some veterans on the team, but every team needs that. They have a good mix of youth and veteran players.
Anyway, this isn't supposed to be a pissing contest. As I said earlier in the thread, they have a decent 1-5. It's just a shame their management won't take the extra steps to help them get a pitching staff.
-

It's just as bad up here with Boston fans. I've lived in both areas. For all the good fans like Mass04 and Body88, you have 10 idiot fans. It's the same in NY.
-
2009 Albert Pujols = Triple Crown Winner.
It is also important to note that no team in the history of baseball has ever come back from a four game deficit in order to win the world series.
The Browns are my favorite basketball team and will win the Stanley Cup this year.
Peace in the middle east!

I respectfully disagree bro...The Orioles do not have a weak fan base. It's so subjective. Winning puts asses in the seats. The Orioles have had 11 straight losing seasons, dude. ELEVEN. The Orioles fans were as patient as can be and still selling out home games up until about five years ago. Can you blame them for not coming to any more games unless a good opponent is in town? Outside of the Cubs, what other losing organization routinely sells out every home game?
Yeah, I forgot about Adam Dunn. Awesome power hitter even though his batting average is smaller than his playing weight. But he only signed a two year deal with the Nats. What player of his caliber and age sign contracts like that these days? You really think he'll be in Washington by 2012? Unlikely. The reason the O's didn't sign Dunn is because he only wanted a short term deal. Smotlz and Lowe are well past their best years as pitchers.
I'm not delusional, I know the O's will probably have another losing season. I just hope it's within my lifetime that the O's start winning again because they have one of the most storied winning traditions in baseball history.
Oh, and one more thing....fuck the Yankees.

Sox fans suffered though years of bullshit....I can't think of more loyal fans. Yes, there is in influx of pink hats now, but Boston is about as hardcore of a sports town as their is. Look at the revenue the Redsox generate compared to the population of their fanbase.

No disagreement from me, bro. That last post was aimed at the local johnny-come-lately's that invade B-more when the Sox come here to play.
Been to Beantown many times and it's like a second home for me. Love that city!

Farm system every year looks pretty good. I go to a lot of Bowie Baysox games here in the local area. Double AA ball.
Weiter, a catcher, in the Orioles farm system has all the tools to be a great player. He'll be called up sometime over the summer to catch games in place of Greg Zaun, who is like 50 years old now.
Are you a Phillies or Pirates fan, Big Mal?

if you thought that was bad, Sammy Sosa was the worst trade signing ever in Orioles history. it's almost as bad as the Glen Davis trade from the late 80's.

By the way, the Orioles have opened the season winning their first three series against the Yankees, Rays, and Rangers.
I know it's early but the O's are swinging the bats well!

LIGHTS out against rays last night, swisher has the enthusiasm they have lacked,it will be great race this yr,they all have to beat each other up,and play 500 against west and pray west beats each of the other teams at the right time.arod i hope comes back and carries them, cano will have career yr he needs it.c.c. could be dominant, wang scares me a bit though.

how about those Blue Jays!! ;D
nobody expected them to do shit this year. even their GM said "not to expect much this season"
their starting pitching right now only has Halladay from last year and 1 other rookie that was part of the starting rotation this year. the rest are all on the IR.
what they are doing right now is awesome if you look at what they have had to do with the starting pitchers.....and their hitting has improved TONS from last year with basically the same line up. gotta thank Cito for that.
GO JAYS!!
-
nobody expected them to do shit this year.
I still don't. To me, this is just a hot team over a small sample size.
I did, however, draft Travis Snider out of the minors for FBB. I wish they would play him full time.
-
Yanks and Sox seem to be finding ways to win while the Rays seem to be finding ways to lose.
Jays are coming back down to earth.
-
Not to sound like a homer but it's impressive that the Red Sox are in first while getting nothing from Ortiz,Lester and Dice-K. The Yanks lineup is incredibly deep. The Dodgers are playing great too.

Whatever to all...I told you bitch ass ni66as about the dodgers...we are like 9-2 without manny...we are goin to the big dance this year bitchessssssssssssss

I kind of disagree. Tampa and Colorado won the pennant the past two seasons, granted they were both outmatched. The Marlins won in 2003, so their is some parity. Granted the big money team usually wins, but their are good races every year. I know its not easy being a Bucs fan right now.
-
You know, I used to think the Orioles held the longest record of futility, but I think the Pirates take the cake in a landslide.
man, I'm getting old. I remember sitting in my 1984 Toyota Supra, smoking a fattie with a couple of bros, listening on the radio to the 1991(or 1992???) N.L Championship series when Fransisco Cabrera of the Atlanta Braves hit that RBI at the end of the game against Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla of the Pittsburgh Pirates. I remember watching the TV replays later of Barry Bonds just sitting in the outfield in disbelief after losing the game.
Wow, memories...I was 18 years old. :)

there are exceptions to every rule
to compete on a yearly basis you need to spend a lot of money
guts - yes after this season the pirates will have the record for the most consecutive losing seasons in ALL OF SPORTS
their magt is shitty but not being as rich as the yankees doesn't help either

Mass04 -since the Ortiz discussion dominates the airwaves up here, what do you think they should do?
The baseball fan in me says that, while Ortiz is definitely in regression, he can't be THIS bad. In other words, although not hitting like he normally does, he has had some bad luck (line drives finding gloves, etc...). Under this assumption, you just have to keep letting him play, or else you will miss the correction.
I hear all these suggestions like sending him to the minors, benching him, DFA, etc.... None of them seem realistic to me. I think the sox just have to ride this one out. What do you think?
-
Yanks get Boston,Mets, and Rangers for the next few series.

I agree. You can't bench the guy because obviously the break during the Seattle series did him no good. He has been hitting the ball a lot harder lately, i think you just ride it out. He's too good of a hitter to all of a sudden not be able to hit .200. His days of 45 home runs are over, but i think its more mechanical and metal than anything else. I honestly think he needs a sports psychiatrist or something. The hard part for Francona is how long can you keep him in the lineup? I don't like to put a timeline on it but if he's still like this at the end of June, that's a pretty big sample to go on, so they might need to make a move to get another left handed hitter.
-
YEah bitches...5 runs in the bottom of the 8th...Go Big BLUE!!!!!

I normall ythink the pysch stuff is overblown, but I agree with you 100% on this one. I think he's feeling the some self-imposed pressure to live up to the Ortiz of the past. I had 4th row seats vs. Baltimore and his whole presence didn't look the same. His overall body language is way off. It's hard to describe, but he just looked like a beaten man. He needs to take the same advice he gave ARod - just breathe, relax, and let it happen.
As for the sox acquiring a bat, I keep hearing names like Adrian Gonzalez, Victor Martinez, and Matt Holliday. Ignoring the fact that everyone I hear seems to think the sox can land any one of these guys for Bowden + Lugo (lol1), I'm not sure of any of these three.
Gonzalez is very cheap for the next two years, something SD needs in a player.
Getting Holliday requires negotiating with Billy Beane, which means your farm gets ransacked. And he's only a rental before FA.
Martinez is an elite hitter, and will cost a ton. But he seems the most realistic of the three.
I think the sox really don't have to make any moves. They just need to hope that Beckett and Lester get more consistent.
From a Yankee fan standpoint, I think all they need is a minor bullpen tweak.

If the Phillies get some pitching going they could repeat. Ibanez has to be the best free agent acquisition this year by any team. I'm a little biased though, I've been a Phillies fan since I came out of my moms womb.

dodgers winning without manny i'm a bit shocked, but as a yankee fan tip my cap to torre.he is good with the younger guys.jeter is having a season like he did yrs ago hitting the ball all over the place again.yanks are in great position and adding texiera has made a world of difference bat, defense is impeccable.

These guys. I lifted this from another board. The comments aren't mine - I'm completely unfamiliar with these guys
Locke-Low 90's, great curve, good change. Iffy control. IMO best prospect in this deal
Morton-Mid to back of rotation guy. Fastball about 90, 91, decent offspeed. A step up from Karstens/Olhendorf
Hernandez-Toolsy raw CF, great defense, great speed, expendible due to Schafer

I'm glad he pitched that well because I drove home after the game.
the standing O for anything positive that Papi does is pretty lame.

One of my best friends just got called up for the braves. OF Brian Barton..He is pretty cool. He stayed in AAA for like a few days before they pulled him up. HE got traded from St Lous.

i agree. It's sad that he gets a curtain call for a 300 foot home run. I never watch a game Dice-k pitches. Every inning is a mess and he's a bullpen killer. Last year was probably the worst 18-3 seasn in history.

As much as there are many facets of RSN that bug me, I can't fault them for the standing O in this case. They're just trying to support their guy. It beats all the EEI callers calling for his release.
I agree totally about Dice-K. It puts a little more faith in the baseball numbers I look at. All data was showing that he HAD to have this happen eventually. The fact that he got through a whole season last year with those win totals was remarkable.
I'm really curious to see what happens at the trade deadline this year.
I'm not hyped at all for this next series. No matter what the outcome, it won't change how I feel about the rest of the season for either of these teams.

I meant it more in that for a guy who hit 50 homers, it's sad when he hits one it's big news. I agree though that im glad people aren't turning on him.

I see it like this:
Hitting - Advantage Yankee's
Pitching - Advantage Redsox
Bullpen - Huge advantage Redsox
Manager - Advantage Redsox
If it comes down to Redsox vs Yankees I think the sox have the depth to win. The Sox O is not that far off what the Yank's have anyway.

I agree excpet for SP and magager. I don't think the sox 1-5 are better than the Yankees, but this involves Burnett getting himself straight. Managers are equal, both have their strengths and weakness. I am saying this as a big Francona fan.

The one huge different is the bullpen and the long relief. The sox are much better there. The Yankees are slightly better offensively and it's about even 1-5 (however the sox have more depth - imo). I don't know enough out Joe G to disagree with you intelligently, so ill defult to your opinion of both managers being about equal. I hope the sox drop the last game of this series....don't want the law of averages against us to much come playoff time!

ITS PUZZLING ...esp the way yanks have been going, pre 04 yanks were head to head with them ,now they lose series after series to them.i still think the yanks could take division but what really matters is say the alcs bosox could take them out again.

I think the Yankees lack team chemistry. Also, the Sox have gotten away from signing every free agent in the market (aside from a must have target) and focused more on growing their own talent. That said, the real difference is the pitching and the bullpen. The Redsox bullpen is much better than the Yankees pen. In the playoffs you must have interchangeable 1+2 aces, a deep rotation and a strong bp/closer are what is most important.
For the sox it's:
1.) Beckett - 1A.) Lester - Masterson - Delcarmen - Okie - Fernandez and Paplebon. That's sick, and then you have the depth behind that, also.
-
I wish I could be as interested in baseball as some of you guys that post here. Most of the teams spoken of on this thread are mostly perennial winners. I'd love to chime in here and there with optimism and speaking heavy praise about the Baltimore Orioles. But not having a winning team to feel good about since 1997 wears on you.
-

Peter Angelos sucks horribly. Just a greedy corporate lawyer with too much money and not an ounce of baseball passion.

I guess, but when the going gets tough in the playoffs will they band together like a true team? I don't know. It's all good in June....before they ran into the sox, they rattled of what, 19-26 or something? I think the Yankees pen will be their downfall this year. I'm not a hater either, I said it would be Yankees-Sox at the start of the season and I never wrote them off when they came out of the gate playing like shit.

I don't agree about the chemistry, but all your other points are vaild, and I got around to really looking at the Yankees pitching numbers. They're pretty bad right now, worse than I expected, so I give Boston the nod in SP as well right now.
The Yankees will make a move for their pen, and they also are getting Bruney back. They should also be calling up Melancon from the minors.
The only positive I take out of this is that the sox are 7-0 vs. the Yankees this year, and only one game up. If the Yanees only won 3 games, they'd be five up. In other words, they're destroying eveyone else but Boston.

What really sucks is that this year you have good base of players. Markakis, Roberts, Jones, etc...and now Weiters gets called up, and his projections are through the roof. Guthrie would be a great #3 on most teams, but he has to be the #1 in Baltimore.
Angelos does fucking suck. He could have had guys like Derrick Lowe, etc...
-
Adam Jones has all the tools to be a bonafide star at centerfield. Resigning Markakis to a long term deal was very suprising considering Angelos shut him down for a salary increase during arbitration.
With Weiters, Markakis and Jones to build around, there is reason for optimism in Baltimore. But, as always, it comes down to the starting pitching. (which we have none) Maybe the Orioles can pick up Glavine off the scrap heap but he'll probably go to Boston or NY.

Some do, some don't. Big market teams should not be punished for spending more money and generating more revenue. It's the owner and the fans fault if there team is broke as shit. my pens would NOT be stanley cup champs if it wasn't for the lockout in 2005

none of them were drafted by the sox
do you think it's fair that only the sox and yankees had a chance to sign dice k or whatever his name is from japan?
imagine only the giants and patriots being able to sign a certain nfl prospect ::)

It's on you as fans to grow your teams revenue capabilities. The Tampa bay Rays are a prime example of a team that can win with a tiny payroll. Get better coaches and scouts and maybe the Pirates can do the same.
You're right about Manny, Schill and Becket in 04...but without Ellsbury, Lester, Paplebon and Youk the sox would have never won the title in 07. Every single one of those guys was drafted and grown.
Btw, the NFL will be going uncapped soon.
-

I can't agree with you here, my man. The Rays are only where they are because they sucked so bad for 10 years, and were able to be a the top of the draft all those years. I give them credit for drafting well, but can't use them as a good example of a model franchise.
This is not to take away anything from what the sox have done recently in terms of player development, but the financial advantage our teams have is huge. Money makes it so much easier to get to the playoffs. Anything can happen after that.
But, I DO have a problem with owners taking all the revenue sharing they get from us and put it in their pockets, rather than to player development. And I do have a problem with mega-rich owners being cheap.

so one small market team has one fluke year, payroll means nothing? i don't think so
how is it fair for the yankees to spend 150 million more than other teams? why have any team outside of new york, boston, chicago and LA? it seems to me that baseaball only wants these teams to be successful
why do we have to worry about revenue capabilities with baseball but no other sports?
and i'm not putting all the blame on payroll for the pirates sucking, with a cap they would be the bengals of baseball because they have shitty mgt
the players i listed were arguably the best players on those sox teams, without their deep pockets they don't sign them and they don't win 2 titles

Of course they don't. Teams like the sox, and, even moreso the Yankees generate more revenue for MLB and the owners than many teams combined.
The Royals and Pittsburgh sure don't mind the checks that come from the Bronx every year. I put no blame on the Yankees. The generate the most revenue and spend the most. To not use this financial advantage would be bad business.

Thats why I didn't bury the sox months ago. Come playoff time they will contend :D If Dice K keeps pitching like he did last night, the sox will be dangerous.
-
Ho-hum,another come back win for the Yankees.

Angels got screwed tonight.

I agree. The MLB fixed this game so the Sox could only be down 7 games in the east, and up 6 games instead of 5 games on the Rangers.
Bad call? Yes. Fixed? Come on.

if the game wasnt on espn primetime what are the chances he walks ;) :-\

Didn't watch it, but saw all the complaining online. Pitch #9 = Ball 4.

The same, because it was a single bad call. What in the world does ESPN (or anyone) gain by fixing a random end of the season game that has little to no impact on the playoff race? I agree that it was a poor call, but I don't buy into the whole "fixed" thing.
-
Bad call yes fixed no.

they gain more visitors to espnboston.com (http://espnboston.com)

That makes no sense. Redsox fans watched the game on TV, why would they go to ESPN.COM, after? ESPN.COM has been promoting that site via TV and radio for months. They also brought in local beat writers with a large follwing. It wasn't fixed my friend. A bad call? Def.

the website is for ad revenue nothing more lol. More traffic the better. It is brand new.

You're talking to a guy who does marketing and media buying for a living. The tactic you outlined is ridiculous. True, they want as much traffic as they can get to their site, but if you think they told the MLB to throw a game so they could get a small spike in traffic, I have some ocean front property I'd like to sell you.....

Is it warm? I don't feel like dealing with another NE winter just yet. It got cold up here fast. We're still playing softball right now, and I'm sure the night games are going to be cold.
BTW, the two sacks the Pats got on the last drive got me the win in FFB. Not liking Mayo out going forward though.

I love the fall and the winter! Lots of skiing to do : ) Glad you got the win, and yes, Mayo being out for 6 weeks is bad news. Interstingly enough, the secondary looks damn good. They locked down two top flight receivers last week.
