Filter sucked.
In my opinion Nirvana kinda sucks too. All three of them were pretty shitty musicians.
Bush? They're alright I guess.
-
Alice, STP, Bush, Tool, Soundgarden
-
Red Hot Chili Peppers were more of a 80's band. They sold out in the 90's.
-
Exhorder.
-
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Tool.....if they cut out the 5 minutes of droning in every song they go up a spot
Alice in Chains
Nirvana
Kings X....off the charts musicianship
Screaming Trees
Weezer
Sublime
Deftones
-
could you REALLY talk about the best bands of the 90s without mentioning STP
-
Slipped my mind.....yep, they were great.... take out Weezer and put them in, even though i LOVE "say it ain't so" .
I just saw a concert of STP taped this year in Chicago. They sounded fantastic and the new stuff held its own
-
Nirvana
STP
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Alice in Chains
Grunge rock never recovered from from Cobain's death and was nearly end by the middle of the 90s.
Maybe Tool... but I agree with Groink they need to cut somee of the bullshit out of every song.
I also like Limp Bizkit in the 90s too

I happen to agree that their more recent work has a tendency to be overblown, but that stuff came out in the 2000 decade. Aenima, which IMO is their best album, came out in 1996.
Truth be told, with few exceptions, even the great bands follow the pattern of having a good run that lasts for about five years, then they jump the shark.
-
I think Nirvana is one of the most overrated bands in history.
Their musicianship is crap.
They just got famous because the Seattle music scene (grunge) became hip and Nirvana was one of the biggest names in the scene.
But they are basically like a punk rock band. Shitty songs, all attitude and emotion.

The 90's were an abysmal decade for rock/metal in North America.
The quality music was being made in Europe.
Evergrey
In Flames
Hypocrisy
Stratovarious
Arch Enemy

Yes.
Soundgarden, Crowes, Alice, Tool, Helmet, PJ.
-
they came in late GODSMACK

Great first record. Buckcherry about the same time. Solid debut, too - Guns meets Aerosmith meets DC.
Then they got stupid.

The majority of bands listed so far are not worth a hand job. The 80s produced some of the best bands and best music ever. The 90s sucked that's why there are no longer hardly any bands still around from that era but many bands from the 80s are still going strong today and are as good as ever like this band for example:
Screw 90s music.
-
Blind Melon
Hell yeah! Forgot em.
-
Come on man.
Agree. I hate all that Counting Crows MOTR crap. >:(

Why didn't any of these bands make it big in the States? It's not as though Americans are prejudiced when it comes to music.
The reason is that this overly technical music lacks heart and soul and the songs are even very good.
The reality is that there was a stretch in the 90s when Tool was easily the best hard rock band in the world.

Metallica started in the 80's. I think he meant only bands that begun in the 90's... So my vote is Rammstein!

The music I posted isn't exactly technical, nor does popularity equate with quality.
After Nirvana hit in the early 90's, rock bands were dropped from virtually every record label around. Grunge and alt-rock were the only bands being signed. Only the major bands like Metallica and Pantera (which hit number 1 in 94 with Far Beyond Driven) were still kicking. Big business killed music in the 90's. Local music didn't fare much better with rock bands going from playing week long gigs to single set a week, if they were lucky.
North American television and radio dictated what the public listened to and watched. If one band hit it big, 20 clones of said band were then signed. There was very little outlet for other music to be heard as this was prior to the explosion of music on the internet and file sharing.

19. Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes (1998)
20. Judas Priest - Painkiller (1990)

Well put. Half the bands aren't even around anymore....Danimall has a good list up there, but again some of those bands are from the 80's and 70's..where great QUALITY solid rock came from. Not this screaming, distorted, death metal bulls*t.

ur right as cheesy as it is u could see poison/great white/and say warrant on a bill now,the 90's bands today u wouldn't see soundgarden/p jam/stp ,they all broke up or trying new things.

Rage against the white man can suck it.
hahaha, I didn't say they had the best politics of the 90's...I just like their tunes. I'm a pretty simple minded dude. I don't know what the efff they are singing about in half of their songs, I just like Tom Morello's riffs.
Rage and Tool are definitely my top 2 bands from the 90's

Unfortunately Cornell cant sing like he used to anymore....A Soundgarden show would be painful to watch.
I'n a huge Soungarden fan but I would not want to see him try (and fail) to hit those notes again all night long.
