Title: Uh-oh.....Steelers' Ward rips NFL on safety issues
Post by: Wiggs on December 01, 2010, 08:08:01 PM
ward is correct about everything...especially Manning and Brady

PITTSBURGH (AP)

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward lashed out Wednesday at the NFL for what he calls its hypocritical stance on player safety, arguing the league recently toughened its stance only because it wants to expand to an 18-game season.

Ward said there is considerable confusion among players about which hits are legal and which aren't since the league stepped up its policing of dangerous hits. Steelers linebacker James Harrison has been fined $125,000 for four separate hits since mid-October, two of which weren't penalized.

''The league doesn't care about us anyway,'' said Ward, a 13-year veteran and the leading receiver in Steelers history. ''They don't care about the safety of the game. If the league was so concerned about the safety, why are you adding two more games on? You talk about you don't want players to drink ... and all you see is beer commercials. You don't want us to gamble, but then there are (NFL-endorsed lottery scratch-off games).''

The NFL is currently pushing for an expanded season during ongoing labor negotiations with the players union.

Ward also predicted a team will lose a game - possibly in the playoffs - because an official makes an incorrect call out of fear of being disciplined by the league for not adhering to its new policy.

''It's going to change the outcome; somebody's going to lose a game because of it,'' Ward said. ''It's going to be a huge play in a playoff game, somebody's going to hit a quarterback or do something and the referee is going to be too scared to call it. So he's going to call it anyway so he can save his tail. He (the player) may not even get fined or not, but it will come down to the outcome of a ballgame.

Ward's comments reflect the growing anger among the players on one of the NFL's showcase franchises. The Steelers are becoming increasingly upset over the near-weekly fines levied Harrison, a perceived lack of protection for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and hits that are fined and penalized one week, but aren't subject to any penalty a week later.

''We don't know what the league wants. ... If a quarterback gets hit within the play, you can't hit him in the helmet, you can't hit him in the knees,'' Ward said. ''Where can you hit a quarterback? I keep seeing our quarterback getting hit all the time.''

Ward and several other Steelers players argued the NFL wouldn't hesitate to fine a player who injured the Colts' Peyton Manning or the Patriots' Tom Brady, yet did nothing when Roethlisberger appeared to be roughed up by Buffalo's Arthur Moats and Marcus Stroud after being sacked Sunday. Replays of the hit appear to show Moats twisting Roethlisberger's right leg while he is on the ground.

Neither player drew a penalty or fine. Roethlisberger, who injured his right knee and foot, wore a walking boot on Wednesday, although he said he expects to play Sunday in Baltimore.

Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs took the unusual stance of agreeing with the rival Steelers during a conference call with Pittsburgh reporters.

''The league has their favorites,'' Suggs said Wednesday. ''One being in Indy (Manning) and one being with that team up north (Brady). Besides those two, everybody is fair game. Like I always said, (the Bengals') Carson Palmer got his knee hurt in 2005, but there was no rule made. Then Tom Brady got hit in the knee and all of a sudden there is rule and possible suspensions, excessive fines. It's just getting ridiculous.''

Roethlisberger, asked about Suggs' comments, said, ''He seems to know some things about the game of football.''

Despite the weekly confusion they're expressing, the Steelers won't change their playing style to adopt to the ever-shifting rules, according to Ward.

''We're going to keep playing the way we always have been playing,'' Ward said. ''If they fine us, they fine us. It's football. I don't care what type of rules you do, you can't protect (against) the physicality of this game. It's always going to be a physical ballgame.''

Oh look, all the thugs are mad because they can't partake in their thuggery anymore.

Check out this gem from captain dirt himself, Hines Ward:

Well Hines, the NFL might be adding a game or two to enjoy the extra BILLION dollars the added games will generate. Not to mention, they are eliminating two preseason games (which are beyond a joke). I guess Hines does not understand that the NFL is a growing business. Clearly they want to make the game safer so guys can play longer and make more monety for themselves and for the NFL.

Hmmm, so now the NFl is telling guys they can't drink or gamble? Hines, pretty sure they are advising guys not to get shitfaced and act like Big Ben, and not to gamble their life savings away. I think it's safe to say that the NFL has no problem with their players enjoying themselves as long as they conduct themselves like mature professionals.

Oddly enough, men ages 18-54 like beer and scratch tickets. Weird, sounds like the NFL audience. This guys is so fucking out of touch. Idiot.

Maybe the Steelers are getting fined often because they are constantly hitting guys helmet to helmet and playing like dirtbags. Rooney is one of the most respected owners in the NFL and his franchise is one of the most profitable. The NFL is not targeting one of it's biggest cash cows. Retards like Harrison never learn.

I'll give you what you said on the beer and tickets but those two preseason games hardly equal two regular season games...most  starters play no more than a couple series.

You're right, but as you know, the players are asking that they be compensated for the extra games. The NFL is making the game "safer" because they know they will be extending the season.

Hines Ward is a fucking idiot. His points are all retarded.

The NFL is a business and their players are their product. What ward is insinuating is ludicrous. Basically, he's saying the NFL is out to destroy their own product.

This is all moot anyway...America loves the NFL and if these thugs don't change their ways, they will be replaced. There is a who draft of young kids each and every year who would play 30 games if you asked them to.

It is getting ridiculous that anytime a QB gets hit hard a flag is thrown.  The hit Harrison put on Fitzpatrick was a text book hit.  Also, he hit him as the ball was being released.  The hit he put on Jason Campbell was also perfect.  Right when he released the ball.  Just think what would have happened during the eras of Dick Butkus, Jack Lambert, Lawrence Taylor and Bruce Smith/Reggie White.  Those guys would have been fined to the point where they would be paying the NFL to play on Sundays.  It is out of control.

Actually he makes a valid point...Look at the injuries over the past couple years...for whatever reason, they seem to be getting worse, thus shortening their careers...Then you want them to play two more games on top of this?  LOL...that's fucking nuts...Of course the owners want them to do this at the same rate of pay, less revenue sharing, less guaranteed money and whatever else I'm forgetting...Fuck that...if there's any sport that deserves 100% guaranteed contracts, it's NFL...
Title: Re: Uh-oh.....Steelers' Ward rips NFL on safety issues

The gambling thing is VERY hypocritical....the NFL REQUIRES teams to disclose injuries so that the point spread can be adjusted accordingly.

Beer?  Nah.....its about drinking responsibly.  the only time you hear them bash a player is when he gets popped for a DUI.

18 game schedule.  No need for it, its just to generate more cash, as there isn't an outcry from fans to have it.  That said, if the players don't like it, get a 9-5 job like the rest of us dumbasses in the world and see which one you like better.

Hits....they are all over the charts on this issue.  And you can tell the announcers have been coached to not question when its called.  The really just need to review each instance of it, happens a few times per game, and let the booth decide if there was intent involved.

hines ward is right. so was polamalu.

have you ever played football at a competitive level? no, you havent- i can tell from all your fanboy posts. your the guy who likes to sit online and play fantasy football, and watch it on tv, pretends he knows the game because he watches NFL network and knows what cover 2 means, but hasnt an ounce of athletic ability. the closest you've come to a football field is the bleachers you sit on and eat your hot dogs. you like to spout off numbers and stats cause you feel it makes you look like you know the game, but would shit his pants when a 240 fullback comes running up the a gap looking bury his helmet in your face and run you the fuck over.

because if you had played football you would know that playing at half speed, half assed, half intensity is going to get you hurt badly. maybe someone else as well. defensive players cannot play half speed, cognisant of 'am i too high am i leading with my helmet is my timing off'. THATS how guys get hurt.

stick to your stats and numbers, fool. leave the actual game to real men.

That's kind of harsh....
I agree with what the NFL is doing, I just think it should apply to everyone not just key players.
All this would do for me is key in on Brady and Manning to send a point...

Defense don't play at half speed but they can get the job done without trying to hurt someone...that hit on Fitzpatrick was clearly helmet to helmet and Harrison just isn't getting it..

It's a tough sport...I played in high school and overseas as a RB and after every game the next day I would be in pain and aching...

im just tired of listening to 'nancy 88' and his 'my opinion is the be all and end all' when it comes to football. he's a 310 pound fat guy who scours stats and then comes online to sound like he's the imminent authority on all things football. the closest the guy has gotten to playing football is when he washed the jerseys in high school.

i can tell from your post you were on the other side of the ball. im not debating that there are hits that shouldn't happen- but you cant tell me harrisons hit was intent to injure. his job is to do two things- stuff the run/ kill the quarterback. last time i looked the quarterback was considered a football player, not a ballerina. if you dont want your quarterback to get hurt draft better offensive players- but his is where the problem lies, isnt it? thats why the NFL is doing this- defensive players have become far better athletes than offensive players now. heads and shoulders better. the NFL knows this dispaity is becoming evidently greater and greater every year and is attempting to even the playing field by restricting the intensity of defensive players. you take away the defenses teeth in an attempt to level the playing field. its the cold truth that many wont say due to vested interests but if you have played the game to any extent you'd see its painfully obvious. im waiting for a player to come out and say it directly. they are dancing around it but nobody will say it. can you imagine the fallout? jesus. lol goodell would have a fucking stroke.

the rules had been there the NFL is just choosing to enforce them.
kind of like all the gun laws we have that the government doesn't enforce. ;D

Honestly he is right about Peyton and Brady, and the new rules.  Harrison hits have been good football imo......haven't seen them all but he is just a hard physical player from what I have seen.  BTW, I hate the steelers.

What is fucking hilarious to me though is a Steeler talking about a ref pushing the game in a team's favor cuz of the new rules.....HELLO you have two Super Bowl rings bcuz of officials you fucking dickhead.  The two worst called games in NFL history.....not super bowl history.......NFL HISTORY are the last two steeler's gifted championships.  A complete fucking joke!

It's a tough sport...I played in high school and overseas as a RB and after every game the next day I would be in pain and aching...

omg wiggs his helmet hit him in the chest then slid up but never hit him in the head...should not have been a penalty let alone a fine  omg!!!

so much for the steelers getting "special treatment" from the nfl like all the haters seem to think ::)

first the nfl suspends big ben for 4 (originally 6) games without being charged with a crime, now the issues with the way harrison tackles

watch the vid, the ref had the flag in hand before he even touched fitzpatrick

Farve didn't throw the game, dude regularly throws at least 2 picks per game. Vick threw into triple coverage last week and wound up in a TD!

 ::)

you really believe the nfl would have let indy or the viks beat the saints when they were pushing the katrina story, 30M to fix the dome, award after award to saints' players, and the best ratings in sports' history when they made you think the saints were america's team.  ::)

too bad they cant sell the oil spill for rating.  damn BP!  ::)

hines ward is right. so was polamalu.

have you ever played football at a competitive level? no, you havent- i can tell from all your fanboy posts. your the guy who likes to sit online and play fantasy football, and watch it on tv, pretends he knows the game because he watches NFL network and knows what cover 2 means, but hasnt an ounce of athletic ability. the closest you've come to a football field is the bleachers you sit on and eat your hot dogs. you like to spout off numbers and stats cause you feel it makes you look like you know the game, but would shit his pants when a 240 fullback comes running up the a gap looking bury his helmet in your face and run you the fuck over.

because if you had played football you would know that playing at half speed, half assed, half intensity is going to get you hurt badly. maybe someone else as well. defensive players cannot play half speed, cognisant of 'am i too high am i leading with my helmet is my timing off'. THATS how guys get hurt.

stick to your stats and numbers, fool. leave the actual game to real men.

It's well documented that I played football at the D3 college level, and I have never claimed to be an elite athlete. I played ball for a couple season before transferring to BU to finish off my degree. While I never faced the monsters you had to deal with, I understand what you are saying.

It is absolutly possible to play football at full speed without playing like a thug. It's telling that the same guys are being fined over and over, while the rest of of the NFL is able to play within the rules.

It's also clear that you missed my point(s).

im just tired of listening to 'nancy 88' and his 'my opinion is the be all and end all' when it comes to football. he's a 310 pound fat guy who scours stats and then comes online to sound like he's the imminent authority on all things football. the closest the guy has gotten to playing football is when he washed the jerseys in high school.

i can tell from your post you were on the other side of the ball. im not debating that there are hits that shouldn't happen- but you cant tell me harrisons hit was intent to injure. his job is to do two things- stuff the run/ kill the quarterback. last time i looked the quarterback was considered a football player, not a ballerina. if you dont want your quarterback to get hurt draft better offensive players- but his is where the problem lies, isnt it? thats why the NFL is doing this- defensive players have become far better athletes than offensive players now. heads and shoulders better. the NFL knows this dispaity is becoming evidently greater and greater every year and is attempting to even the playing field by restricting the intensity of defensive players. you take away the defenses teeth in an attempt to level the playing field. its the cold truth that many wont say due to vested interests but if you have played the game to any extent you'd see its painfully obvious. im waiting for a player to come out and say it directly. they are dancing around it but nobody will say it. can you imagine the fallout? jesus. lol goodell would have a fucking stroke.

LOL!

You're wrong, dude, but whatever. I'm not some fat nerd, and I've never scoured the net for a single fact I've used in an argument against you. I'm just not an ignorant person who talks a bunch of shit without knowing what I am saying. I happen to know a lot about the Patriots because I have been a season ticket holder for over a decade.

You're assumptions about superior defensive players are off base, imo. The NFL wants to extend the season and realize more revenue. They also look at their retired players who are crippled and also the average NFL player who has a shelf life of about four years, and they've realize that something needs to be done to provide these players with some sort of safety net. The players are their product, so they are attempting to extend their careers. You can play football full speed with clean hard hits. Harrison has a long record of being a thug, which is why he is being targeted. Killing the QB is no longer what the NFL is about. These guys need to change with the times or they will be replaced.

Your childish and insult ridden rants say more about you than me  :)

how about the one on thursday where philly used shaubs head like a bongo drum with no flag?

dont think brady or the manning brothers would have had that happen without a flag and possible fine...

say what you want about ward but to deny there is a double standard in terms of brady and peyton is ignorant

Very true.....and if almost any other QB in the league was stinking it up like Peyton is right now the media would be trashing them.....but Peyton gets a pass because he has "so many weapons out"  yeah, Reggie Wayne is a bum.....  try that line of thought for P Rivers in SD who has a cobbled together WR group and even though they lost on Sunday, he is playing at a very high level.

You forgot to add "gets rule changed to accommodate his playing style" to Brady getting cracked in the knee.

Right.. thats what i see...What kind of shit is that. "the leauge took a hit when Brady was out"

So.

Rules are rules. This is the 2nd rule they created for this guy. Now I think Brady is awesome.. He balls out with a bunch of midget WRs..but he gets special treatment. And other QBs dont... that is.. unless they play the steelers.. than if you breathe near a qb you gettin fined.

Tuck rule.. Keep Brady in playoffs
Hit in knee rule.. .keep Brady On TV.. Amazing
