Title: Planet Fitness Gym - Get out, all you personal trainers!
Post by: Ron on December 13, 2010, 04:20:56 PM
NEWINGTON, NH -- Planet Fitness is discontinuing personal training at its clubs, according to CEO Mike Grondahl.

In a letter written to Planet Fitness owners, Grondahl says the Newington, NH-based company’s corporate-owned clubs will end all personal training sessions by Dec. 16. Franchisees will have until the first quarter of 2011 to end their personal training sessions.

“The decision to end personal training has been long and arduous,” Grondahl wrote in the letter. “It goes right to the essence of our business model. We’ve always tried to keep personal training to a minimum at Planet Fitness. But the problems related to having trainers in our gyms have never completely gone away. Lately, they’ve gotten worse. Too many trainers are pushing PT on our members, the vast majority of whom have zero interest in it. These clubs are opening themselves up to trouble.”

Grondahl says the clubs will continue their “P.E. at P.F.”—physical education at Planet Fitness—group fitness training sessions.

Grondahl began the letter by claiming that most people doing personal training are “just renting friends.”

“For us to be selling personal training is a fraud and downright condescending to anyone who can breathe,” he wrote.

Grondahl adds in the letter that personal training did not fit Planet Fitness’ “judgment-free zone” and that the company plans to use its no personal training model as a marketing tool.

“We’ll be the only fitness chain that can say we’ll never try to sell you personal training,” Grondahl wrote. “A lot of people will say we are dead wrong with this historic move. But the world was flat once, and who the hell needs a friend for 50 bucks an hour?”

I could never understand why anyone would pay someone an hourly rate of 3-4 times the gym's monthly rate, especially when most of those people do little more than count reps and speak pious platitudes.

I am not opposed to personal training; however, as a PF customer, I believe that personal training is overkill for most PF customers.

This CEO sounds like a wack job.

I agree that much of what happens at Planet Fitness is, well, gayer than Planet Fitness.  But the CEO's comment about the essence of PF's business model makes sense.

A very rich wack job. Keeping PT's out is a good move. Plus Coach it only helps real trainers like you in the long run.

Appreciate that, I know the guy is wealthy but I've also seen and know some of the trainers at Equinox and their PT development is exeptional as far as fitness goes and CEU programs are a must. They pay well, complete benefit packages the whole nine yards.

I think its a great idea. PT's are the worst thing to happen to the gym/Fitness world.
Strength Coaches, group fitness, all makes sense. Alphabet PT's are useless and just taking peoples money to talk to them while they show 'em shitty exercises.

I can see what the CEO is trying to prevent.  He is trying to prevent the phenomena of the "New trainer who prospects/bothers everyone at the gym in hopes of getting PT sessions"....or, so he says.

Honestly, as a trainer, I'm not at all offended by this.  Personal training isn't for everyone and most people do find the whole "selling of PT" as very annoying

However, I think a better solution would be to keep a limited number of trainers available for those who, sincerely, need a trainer and not pay those trainers a hourly fee.  Furthermore, the gym shouldn't do free assesments- start charging for them

The problem with personal trainers is that they might not represent what your club does re instruction, etc. It is probably best to keep good trainers as staff and control them this way. People do need instruction and that is part of what gyms usually provide to new members.

So many clubs have low memberships (well, not in Australia) and then sell expensive personal training that many need to know what to do. It is difficult to make a profit in the gym business so owners are trying various strategies. I agree with Planet Fitness on their decision. Well, as long as the vacuum is filled with capable instructors on their staff.

Most people need a good personal trainer.  I'd say 90% of people that work out are doing something incorrectly in every workout.  I tell people that I give orientations to not to worry about doing exercises incorrectly because they'll just fit in with everyone else.

I like it. Never been to Planet Fitness but personal training is a scam and most personal trainers are fuking idiots. The people who pay for these idiots to train them are even worse. Personal trainers are typically insecure people that need to feel power over people, and at the end of the day feel "important." They don't give a rats ass about the person getting results; they just burn to have someone needing them.

Translation: The lawyers and accountants tell me that potential liability from client injury as well as risk of lost revenue from prosecution of juice sales makes PT a bad bet for the bottom line.  So here's the usual spin saying we're all about our customers and I can't believe people keep buying it.

Not in the gym....but you can always tell when a new crop has been hired....it was pretty comical for 2yrs when I was at Mountain Side Fitness in AZ.  I would get calls every 5 - 6 mos. asking me if I was happy with my fitness goals....and if I was ready for the ______ (summer/winter/holidays/etc).  I would always ask their name, find out when they were working...introduce myself.....and say "please take me off your list to ever call again"

Then I would take my workout clothes off, hit some poses.....end with a most muscular in his/her face....and as I was dressing I would say "BOOM!...in yo' face" - (no homo)

After this year, I'm discontinuing personal training services.  May do group training but that's about it.  I'm going to spend more time running my fitness websites.

As far as Planet Fitness is concerned...I actually agree with the CEO.  Too many of these PT are imposing their will on clients just to sell them services to the point where they run people out of their memberships.  However they need to have some trained staff on board to assist gym members...otherwise if an accident occurs, they can get into a huge lawsuit

Most personal trainers that I've witnessed in various gyms I've belonged to try to make working out the most complicated thing that they can.  This way the client keeps thinking they need the trainer for guidance and keeps buying more sessions.  I always remember this time I saw a guy doing pushups and the trainer just wouldn't shut the hell up.  "Move your hands in a couple inches...not that far...little farther...there it is...now move your head up...little too far...up a little more...there it is!  Great form!"  Fuck just let the guy do a pushup.

I've worked out since highschool but I got into the best shape of my life w/a trainer.

I think the excellent ones may be somewhat rare though, at least at my gym.

Is your trainer still around?  There are some excellent PT's, but you don't typically see them hanging out in the gym trying to drum up business.

That's just it though. Its a rarity. Finding a personal trainer that actually knows what he/she's doing and looks the part is like finding a pin needle in a heystack.

LOL i like it but then I think alot of you guys underestimate exactly how uninformed the vast majority of the public is about lifting weights and fitness in general.

I used to be a PT and I can tell you that yea i was way overpaid and these ppl got basic workouts b/c thats were they were physically and fitness wise

but

these ppl had no workout experience didnt know proper form on exercises, rep ranges, what muscles are worked with each exercies, what muscles to work, how many times a week, how often etc...

its like teaching someone to freaking walk on their own, I agree that most will like this but then again the ppl who really like it are probably the ppl that need it the most...ppl that are in shape and have knowledge on what they are doing dont really get approached by PT's for training

I could never understand why anyone would pay someone an hourly rate of 3-4 times the gym's monthly rate, especially when most of those people do little more than count reps and speak pious platitudes.

I am not opposed to personal training...

Of course, in most cases, this is a pretty stupid thing to pay for.

But shouldn't we allow the market to be our guide?  If people are willing to pay for information they could learn online for free, why should we stop them?

I'm a fan of personal trainers, because they can help turn former fat sluts into more streamlined sluts without me having to put in any effort.

This is the funny thing: A gym can only make a profit two ways.

1) by forcing its members to pay only by EFT. ("0" gym retention)

2) by pulling a heavy percentage off of its personal trainers and managing/monitoring them 24/7.

Gyms barely break even unless they are like large trucking companies. Memberships that cost peanuts (low rates) and extreme ammounts of volume.

Anyone who has ever run a gym must think this is ludicrous. You don't have to have annoying "floor trainers"-- you can hire certified nutritionists and trainers who are extremely knowledgeable and experienced. Take a percentage of their money or rent them space. There are many new members that won't sign on unless they have a helping hand, and it sure aint gonna come from minimum wage Joe Blow "I don't wanna be here' at the fucking front counter.

They are prolly on the verge of bankruptcy b/c they arent managing their trainers correctly, the trainers are collecting cash and pussy, and giving the gym NOTHING.

Not that difficult to figure out if you've run a gym business.

Everytime I see a clown "trainer" at my gym I notice that his/her clients look exactly the same or worse as they did the year before.

99.5% of the time it's because the client doesn't listen to the trainer. When you have someone that's only with you 2-3 hours per week and the trainer gives that person instructions on what to do in between sessions, how is that the trainers fault?
Title: Re: Planet Fitness Gym - Get out, all you personal trainers!

I don't think you can say that coach... i've observed the personal trainers at my gym a lot and they never have their clients doing productive workouts.  on the other hand, maybe they think the client would just rebel if they had them do a hard workout?

i dunno, but it seems to me trainer incompetence is largely accountable for a lot more than .5% of failed PT relationships.

but i agree that many people could really use a personal trainer.

When you were younger and started training and competing, did you use a personal trainer?  Motivated people learn on their own and stay consistent with their training, which is worth a lot more than any advice a trainer can give.

When you were younger and started training and competing, did you use a personal trainer?  Motivated people learn on their own and stay consistent with their training, which is worth a lot more than any advice a trainer can give.

During that time there were no such thing as personal trainers, we had magazines to copy from, I was fortunate enough to have a football coach who knew how to train and taught us the correct way as far as technique, form, etc. When I started training in an actual gym, there were other members there to help as well as training partners, that doesn't mean they were just as educated as the trainers today, they just knew what exercise trained what muscle Ex: bench press/chest, squats/legs and so on. There was no "functional training" and the know one knew what a "stabilizer" muscle was let alone knowing how to train it and what it's actual function in the human body was for.

Since I began training athletes and looking back, we trained on very little machines except for the nautilus and 90 degree leg press, 45 degree leg presses didn't really start making their way into gyms until the early 80's and training without the use of a lot of machines, people were thicker and stronger because more muscle had to be recruited in the movement.

Damn, I just turned this into a ramble..haha!

Planet Fitness CEO Mike Grondahl does things—and says things—a little bit differently than the typical company CEO.

Take, for instance, the press release Newington, NH-based Planet Fitness submitted last year announcing that Gulf Oil CFO Jayne Conway had been hired by Planet Fitness for the same position.

“The chief financial officer from Gulf Oil moving to Planet Fitness? Who’d a thunk it?” Grondahl said in the company statement.

The word “thunk” was not included in a letter Grondahl wrote to Planet Fitness owners last November. But a lot of other interesting verbiage was.

Grondahl informed his franchisees in the letter that Planet Fitness was ending personal training at all its clubs, beginning last month with its corporate-owned clubs. Planet Fitness franchisees will have the remainder of the first quarter of this year to phase out personal training.

Planet Fitness will still have on-staff trainers providing free training in small groups but they no longer will be allowed to conduct one-on-one training during non-shift hours. The company also will no longer allow non-staff trainers to pay a monthly fee to train clients at the club.

“The decision to end personal training has been long and arduous,” Grondahl wrote. “It goes right to the essence of our business model. We’ve always tried to keep personal training to a minimum at Planet Fitness. But the problems related to having trainers in our gyms have never completely gone away.”

That news definitely caught the industry’s attention, and some of Grondahl’s comments added fuel to the fire.

“Most of the people doing personal training are just renting friends,” Grondahl wrote. “For us to be selling personal training is a fraud and downright condescending to anyone who can breathe.”

Grondahl concluded the letter with this line: “A lot of people will say we are dead wrong with this historic move. But the world was flat once, and who the hell needs a friend for 50 bucks an hour?”

Christopher Columbus he isn’t, but Grondahl created a world of feedback with his remarks. He says that he’s been too busy to see any of the industry’s comments posted on Club Industry’s website.

“I’ve got bigger problems than what they’re saying about me on the Internet,” Grondahl says. “I’m sure I’m not the most popular guy in the industry.”

Although the tone of his letter was intended only for Planet Fitness franchisees, Grondahl says he is not wavering on his decision, which, he adds, was not based on reducing costs.

“We had people complain about personal trainers coming up and soliciting them on the floor,” Grondahl says. “We’re an organization that’s priding ourselves on not having salesmen, yet we’re letting personal trainers go out on the floor and try and sell. It just doesn’t make sense in our model.”

Grondahl also says the growth of low-price competitors that have an element of personal training, such as the Crunch franchise clubs—run by Mark Mastrov’s New Evolution Ventures—and the new Blink clubs introduced by Equinox, played heavily in the decision.

“Had it not been for Mark Mastrov coming and Blink coming, I may not have made this decision,” Grondahl says. “It’s made me get more focused on what we have to do and stay true to our model. Competition is going to make us better.”

The decision by Planet Fitness has once again made personal training a hot-button topic in the industry. Specifically, the discussion centers on the value of a personal trainer and the requirements to attain certification.

Greg Justice, the founder and creator of the Corporate Boot Camp System and AYC Health & Fitness, Prairie Village, KS, supports Planet Fitness’ decision to end personal training. Justice says club operators, particularly at larger clubs, do not train their personal training staff properly, which gives the industry a bad reputation.

“I actually blame the big-box clubs and some of the certifying agencies more than the trainers, as they have set the bar so low that almost anyone qualifies as a trainer,” Justice says. “Some of the certifying agencies are nothing more than ‘puppy mills,’ pushing out as many trainers as they can, just to make a buck.”

Lance Smith, a partner in Live Fit, Augusta, GA, says Grondahl made the right decision for his business model. It’s the way Grondahl chose to explain his decision that does not sit well with Smith.

Smith says personal training is not a “fraud” as Grondahl called it in his letter. Many people who come into a club want or need some form of coaching, he adds.

“Imagine going to your doctor,” Smith says, “and having him or her tell you, ‘Go ahead and use my office all you want for a rock-bottom rate, but I won’t be able to help you. You can go through a one-hour group class on how to use my equipment, though.’”

Grondahl says personal training has its place, just not at Planet Fitness.

“I think that was the big misconception there,” he says. “It definitely has its place. Shoot, someday I’ll probably get a personal trainer, if I can ever get out of the office. I certainly do need one. But I sure as [heck] won’t have one at a Planet Fitness because we do a high-volume business. You don’t need somebody [doing] personal training on the floor.”

I cant cosign that. Personal trainers have helped my mom drop like 50 lbs in 2 years. She had the motivation to go to the gym but she just didnt know what to do. what order to exercise in, how to split her routine. And while in the movement she needed some tweeking.
But now i would say its the same as teachers. Some good ones and some bad ones.
