Title: My shoulder, never injured per se but hurts like crazy
Post by: billbigsby on August 09, 2011, 03:00:21 PM
Hi all, well, I've lifted for 25 years (43 years old) and never had a serious injury except my back doing squats once that healed on it's own after 2 months, no more squats for me except lightish on the smith machine. About 2 months ago I began waking up with left shoulder nagging pain. At first I was convinced I was sleeping on it wrong. I can still lift as heavy as ever in benchpress, shoulders etc but the pain is staying the same. It is strange because I never injured it and I can lift the same but it hurts, particularly in the morning. I noticed today doing back/pulldowns, that my left arm felt funny into my hand, almost like clicking some or funnybonish feeling. Rang of motion and all is fine but it just hurts and I was weaker in pulldowns. I should prolly get on some ibuprofin but was just curious if others have had this and/or ideas of what it may be. I should prolly take bench press off the table, shoulder feels kind of fragile but lifts are unaffected, in fact when I lift, its basically pain free. Mornings are the worst. Thanks alot, Bill

could be many things, best see a good physio, do some tests on you, could be something simple....

as far as sleeping goes, dont sleep on your side...

My shoulder was in bad shape for over a year.....turned out to be tendonitis......finally healed up....but I could not do any shoulder presses or chest presses for over a year.....it was a very trying time....but I am now back to performing presses.....rest was the key.

Interesting, I was thinking it is something along those lines or early arthritis or something. I've taken flat bench off the table as well as wide grip pulldowns. It may be a tiny bit better. Today for chest I did 4 sets of incline barbell, i generally will then go to a bit lower incline but smith machine, then some pec deck type flies. But today the smith machines were all being used so I did the flies machine first then smith machine low inclines. Made it different, pump was fine but tabling bench seems to have done something. How did you do chest and shoulders without any pressing? Did a Dr tell you it was pressing mvmts? How long into that year until it felt better? Thanks,

I could not even press the bar without serious discomfort.....I was only able to perform side laterals....bent over laterals.....shrugs....e tc.

Chest work was usually cable crossovers.....that was it......pressing was non existant......very slow to recover......a full year......had a cortisone shot......shoulder felt better for 6 weeks.....but then the pain returned.

I thought I might have torn something.....but it was tendonitis and the delt just needed rest.

Be patient and don't push things. Best of luck!

Well I haven't done flat bench press since before I made the post about a month ago. The shoulder discomfort is roughly half of what it was ot even less. It feels much better. Also, I haven't done wide grip pulldowns since either. I'm not sure which one was causing the discomfort but it feels a ton better! I've been doing inclines instead. It doesn't seem like thats much of a change but never know I suppose.
