NY Woman Uses Dating Site to Get Over $1200 In Free Meals

A New York woman is being scrutinized and praised after people learned that she used a dating website to obtain $1,200 a month in free meals.
According to Business Insider, 23-year-old Jessica Sporty was deep in debt. Sporty had difficulties living on her $45,000 annual salary after spending nearly $1,500 a month in rent, paying her credit card bill, and buying food.
So she hatched up a plan and signed up with the popular online dating site Match.com so she could quickly go on five dates a week. Sporty even maintained a spreadsheet with detailed information on each of her dates, limiting each guy to a maximum of five.
Dates took Sporty to high-end New York restaurants, and one of her dates even bought her a $200 bottle of champagne.
“Before I barely had enough money to pay for food,” said Sporty. “After using Match.com I found I wasn’t going into debt anymore.”

As of today, Sporty is no longer on the dating website as she is currently in a relationship and most likely freeloading off her new beau.
“It was exhausting,” she said. “I needed my sleep and I was done playing the game.”

Her $45k salary was not enough and she needed at least an extra $500 a month and sometimes $1,000 to pay her credit card bills and afford her $1,475 a month apartment in Murray Hill.
Then she discovered Match.com– the perfect site for a broke 23-year-old.
“Before I barely had enough money to pay for food,” said McGonagall. “After using Match.com I found I wasn’t going into debt anymore.”
McGonagall started eating out five nights a week using a rotation of different guys she met through the dating site. McGonagall kept things simple—no more than five dates with the same guy.
The investment banker types were thrilled to woo her with extraordinary restaurants like the underground taqueria La Esquina and a Japanese restaurant, Megu, in Tribeca. One guy even took her to a champagne bar and purchased a $200 bottle.
McGonagall went from easily spending $500 a month on dinners alone to having someone else dole out an average of $60-plus per night. She also stopped eating lunch and opted for a light breakfast to save even more.
According to our calculations, McGonagall made over $1,200 a month.
Match.com does require a $50 monthly subscription, but the dates more than made up for the entry price.
“I mean, a guy buys me three drinks at $15 a pop and that right there made up for my Match fee,” said McGonagall.
McGonagall's roommates played the money-saving game as well. In fact, McGonagall first learned about online dating after watching one of her roommates go on extravagant outings every night.
Two weeks later, McGonagall and her other roommate joined.
“We made ground rules,” said McGonagall.
One of them called for making spreadsheets about each guy who took them out for their drinks and/or meals. It included names, photos and details from their Match.com accounts.
The girls also let each other know where they were going for the night. And they never let guys pick them up at their apartment and instead met up at a public location.

It’s no surprise considering New York City ranks as the number one online dating city, according to a survey of singles by SNAP Interactive, a social media site. But as popular as online dating had become, and as much of a great saving tactic it was, McGonagall eventually tired of the scene.

McGonagall seems to have retired for good—she currently has a boyfriend.

After running a story about how a young woman who scored a bunch of free dinners through the online dating service Match.com, we received a phone message from an angry Rebecca McAlister*.
“I just think it’s really f-ing funny,” said McAlister, who knew the woman we wrote about in high school. “It’s not until after I told her how I went on Match.com how I got all these nice dates and went on all these free dinners ...”
Her message trailed off, but it’s clear she considers herself the “original Match.com gold digger.”
McAllister started using the service in 2008 after moving to San Jose, Calif. to work as a nanny.
Though she was only spending $400 a month on food at the time–her employers also offered free meals–she found herself flat broke.
“I was working as a nanny and we were still partying like we were in college ... nice alcohol, weed,” she said.
During one of her partying escapades, she decided to log onto Match. When her first date offered to pay for dinner and refused to let her look at the check, she was sold.
“I started emailing 14 to 15 different guys every seven or eight days,” she said.
With some guys, McAllister kept the email conversations going for over a month, and with others, she asked to meet the first night they chatted.
McAlister started going on dates six nights a week and saw her food costs drop by 75 percent. This meant the guys were spending hundreds of dollars a month on her.
The boys usually bought her at least a drink or two, and even better, the San Jose natives were more than happy to show the newcomer around town.
Each date usually cost between $40 and $50, McAllister said. She only split the bill once when she "sort of" liked a date, and she never gave any of them her number.
McAlister also made sure never to date the same guy twice, except for an engineer at Apple who we’ll get to later. For the most part, she thought the dates were “pig faced” and lived in a “delusion” about their appearance.
“Not one single guy on there actually looked like his profile picture,” she said.
McAllister moved ahead with her budgeting scheme and threw in another online dating site, which was free, called PlentyOfFish.com. However, she recommends using Match.com over the latter because she found the boys on there to be “super cheap.” Perhaps Match.com's subscription fee created a barrier to entry.
Eventually, the scheme became tiresome: “You can’t spread your love over all the sites," she said. "Otherwise it’s too much maintenance."
If she didn’t check her email every day or two days, she’d have 35 emails in her inbox with just the two dating services she had going.
When asked about whether she slept with any of the dates, McAllister said she only slept with one when she visited San Francisco and needed a place to crash. She only remembers him as hot “Adam on Match.com.”
She also almost slept with that engineer for Apple when the two agreed to spend the night together on their seventh date. She dumped him on the sixth.
Even with all her money saving success, McAlister actually quit her escapades about a month and a half into the venture. "I started to get too fat," she explained.

the point that you completely missed is that with a tipping system the cost of waiters wages are subsidized greatly by the customer and hence vastly increases the cost for you and me and everyone else who doesn't own a restaurant. without a tipping system and with waiters earning a steady salary the issue of "black people not tipping much" would never come up nor would it be relevant.

why is the burden placed on the customer, you and me, to subsidize the salary of the waiters? wouldn't it be more logical for the owner of the restaurant to simply pay the waiter a living wage in the first place and to then abolish the nearly mandatory tipping system in restaurants?

The minute I walk in someplace w my wife, 9 times out of 10, we don't get nearly as good service as te white couple next to us. I tip well, very well when it has been earned. However, if one is gonna treat me like shit n give me shitty service, they should expect a shitty tip!!

The point of tipping is because they are providing you a service. Good service equals a tip. Bad service equals no tip..If they were givin a flat wage, knowing they were getting paid regardless. Do you think they would do as good of a job? Would strippers be giving you lap dances if there was no incentive for them?
Now the tip jar at the counter of the pizza shop is bullshit. I'm all about tipping the delivery guy if he shows up on time. But I'm picking the pizza up guy. transaction complete. I dont tip the cashier at the grocery store.

In certain parts of NYC gratuity is included in the bill, this occurs in areas where tourist frequent. And the waiter will never tell you so many people wind up tipping twice.
Also it seems like waiters expect a tip so they don't try to give you good service.
