Title: beltup and lift?
Post by: B_B_C on February 02, 2012, 08:17:06 PM
Serious powerlifting aside, what is the case for weightlifting belts in everyday training ?

Heavy squats/deads/standing overhead presses only. Can't see using one for anything other than that. For the average housewife/schuck just going to the gym to workout, I can't see a reason to use one.

I think they are counterproductive for every day training unless you have an injury that requires you to wear one.

I would only use one for very heavy lifts and max attempts on the squat and deadlift.  When i was training in power lifting i would only use it on max effort sets of 3 reps or less.

If you are going to use one at least buy a real weightlifting belt from Inzer or the likes.

inzer lever belt 13mm thickness = best belt ever.

i only use the belt for heavy set, in dl and squat.

the purpose of the belt is to protect the lower back, because if you squat and dead correctly you push your abs against the belt.

-in the dl it help you to keep the back locked

-in squat you can clearly feel your abs pushing agaiinst the bell at the bottom of the movement, it gives you the kick start from the bottom position.

everyone gave good accurate answers. fat guys wear them to do curls to look "less fat". bodybuilders wear them to show off their V taper better.

I recently started doing "cheat" curls...more for strongman stuff, but I don't even wear a belt for those. I mean its only a couple hundred pounds. ::) :D

Yep, and then I have a tendency to just leave my belt on cause I'm too lazy to take it on and off.  LOL  :D  At what weight do you guys wear your belts?  I generally use a belt whenever the lift goes above my body weight.

I only wear a belt on the last set of my main movement for the workout, and only for squats, deads, overhead presses, and rows.
Secondary movements I dont use a belt.
And I follow percentage based loading for my main movements, so the weights that I don't use a belt for consistently go up.

i'm 5 years older... can't say i'm over the hill but my joints feel older... haven't worried about exceeding my peak lifts in several years... although my bench press is still really close... my deadlift has fallen off dramatically (won't go over 4 plates anymore and if i can't make 12 reps at some point i won't do more than 3...)

anyway... long term health is the goal at this point...

Yeah I definetely wouldn't call 34 over the hill, but I can certaintly understand your concerns about long term longevity.
