I wouldn't say he is back.  It's a start though.  I honestly think he will stuggle to beat Jack's record for majors now.

He's been placing high right up on the leader board and even coming close to winning in several tournaments this year, it was just a matter of time. His confidence is flying right now and I'm sure the rest of his peers who thought is was over and didn't give him a second thought anymore are thinking twice. Granted he's one of the biggest assholes on the face of the planet but arguably the greatest golfer to ever play the game. He's like the Ty Cobb of golf..LOL.

I personally don't think so. Way back when Jack Nicklaus won all of those majors and tournaments there wasn't nearly the amount of tournament nor was there a whole lot of competition back then. Look at what we have now. Tournaments every weekend all around the world. PGA, PGA European tour, Asian tour, Champions tour (they are still eligible for the regular tour, The Nationwide. There are tournaments every week and Tiger has been challenged and beat almost everyone from each one of those tours....72 times not including majors. Yes...he's the greatest player bar none to ever play.

bullshit.  quality beats quantity. running back with the most yards per carry is better than the one with the most total yards. quarterback with the highest completion percentage and lowest interceptions is better than the one with the most completions, yards and touchdowns.  pitcher with the lowest ERA is better than the pitcher with the most wins. Batter with the highest batting percentage is better than the one with the most hits.  basketball player with the highest 3 point percentage is better than the one with the most 3 pointers.

Coach, first we are comparing apples to oranges.  Different eras.  Had Jack been pushed by Johnny Miller and Tom Watson for a longer period of time, maybe Jack would have pushed himself to the limit, instead of being the awesome family man he was/is.

You also say that the competition wasn't as good back then.  Uhhhh....Palmer, Trevino, Watson, Zoeller, Irwin, Faldo (prior to 1986 he was a pro), Greg Norman, etc.  All Hall of Famers.

Secondly, take a look at the amount of times Jack finished second (especially in Majors).  He was always in contention.  A few putts here and there, and Jack is untouchable.

Would Michael Jordan be considered the best if he never won a title?

Would Michael Jordan be considered the best if he never won a title?
i dont watch basketball so i have no idea if jordan had tremendous skill outside of being super clutch in the play offs.  your asking the wrong person. the point is that qualitative statistics(%'s) outweigh quantitative(sum total) ones.

that being said, you really need to be a golfer, and have watched tiger play, to understand his pre eminence. his intentionality on the course is unrivaled. the kind of shots he hits. slicing a fairway wood out of the rough around a group of trees uphill about 275 yards to the front of a green he could not see from where he had to hit his shot... etc.

Considering Jack played persimmon and steel shafts in his woods, how could he play like Tiger?

Yeah, Tiger is currently hitting a 2 iron, but it is a huge cavity back, something that Jack NEVER had in his bag.  Pure blades with almost zero bounce.

I am not taking away from Tiger's greatnes, but until he has more Majors, he is the 2nd best player to ever play the game.

IMO Tiger is the greatest golfer to play to the game.  As coach said, Golf has come a long way since Nicklaus played and the competition is much stiffer.  Also the difficulty of courses now is unreal.  These guys are playing longer courses, with narrower fairways, and counter tops for greens.  I think Tiger will break Nicklaus' record and like Brad said, people are quick to forget how good Tiger is.

I didn't realize there were guys on this board into Golf.  I worked at a private club for 7 years not far from where Shinnecock is on Long Island.  Prior to the bodybuilding I could play to a 10-12 handicap... nothing crazy, but could have fun and be competitive with it.

well yes and no. new clubs are certainly easier to hit and give extra distance. but those old school clubs were players clubs. much easier to shape your shots with those blades. you have to fight against cavity backs, theyre too damn forgiving.

tigers greatness isnt about his consistancy or distance, which the new clubs increase,  its about the shots he was able to hit when he needed to hit them. hes never been very consistant, his fairway percentage is pretty abismall relatively speaking,  and hes never been the longest hitter on tour. but he can save par from anywhere on the course, no matter how much shape he has to put on the ball, no matter how much spin he has to give it, no matter how well guarded the green, no matter how hard of a read it is to the hole.. tiger is a beast.

What is your handicap?

The only person to ever say that cavity backs were too "straight" was Sir Nick Faldo, when he had a tryst with Ping Eye 2's.

LOL i definitely need to use cavity backs, but when i need to hit a low curving punch shot around a tree(or anytime otherwise when i need to shape a shot more so than just a ad bit of a fade or draw) i can never get the kind of spin i want with the cavity backs. i have to over exaggerate the fuck out of the swing and pray i make good contact.

Tbombz, it has very little to do with today's clubs, but has everything to do with the ball.

My swing coach (yes, I am that obsessive) had some unused balata balls that we brought to the short game area.  I was spinning those suckers so much I couldn't believe it.  Hitting fucking draws with a wedge!!!!!  On 40 yard shots!!!

Also, you are more than likely doing what every other amateur does (which took 2 full years for me to stop doing) and that is releasing too soon, therefore not putting enough "compression" on the ball.

Need downward strike!!!!  Firm left wrist, which must be flat or bowed, not flipped.

nah ive been golfing since i was 10,  spent years with a pga tour professional who gave me weekly lessons, played on the NCJGA as a kid and on 4 years varsity in high school.   my swing problem is that i come way too far inside during the back swing. i used to have a slice and my coach had me practice the in-to-out swing path for months to develop a draw and now i cant get rid of the damn thing.  plus my muscles get in the way. my short game is impeccable, within 150 yards im a beast, but ourside of that, if i have to take a full swing, its shanks to the left all day long.. but im too stubborn to shorten up my swing and and play conservatively so i shoot reall shitty scores on account of taking 3 shots to get within 150yds on every hole  ;D

He has a long way to go to get to Nicklaus.  I am not pointing directly at anyone here, but so many people automatically say he is the best that never even knew what a golf ball was before he came along, thanks to ESPN and our wonderful media these days.  Golf was played before 1997.

Yes, the fields may be deeper these days, but there was much more quality at the top in the Nicklaus era, as some have already pointed out.

Tiger tees the ball VERY low.  A good swing will always bottom out after contact with the ball.

In the last 2 years, I have become what many would deem a very good golfer.  I am getting better now at an accelerated rate due to me finally being able to hold lag, no club throwaway, etc.

I have read all of the best books on golfing:  Hogan's Five Lessons, Hogan's Power Golf, Elkinton's book, Clampett's book, Snead's book and what might be the best of all: Homer Kelley's The Golfing Machine.

I am starting to see the genius in Foley's methods.  He is creating a one way miss, increased compression on the golf ball, which in turn gives greater distance and better trajectory to Tiger's swing.

Nothing like the Stack and Tilt swing employed by Wi, Baddelley (he has gone away from S&T).
