I want to clarify for you what pound-for-pound means in MMA. There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding what P4P means. This is how you dtermine P4P:
Given the same number of pounds, who is the better fighter?
Pound-for-pound means exactly that: given the same number of pounds, who is the better fighter?
That is, if José Aldo and Anderson Silva weighted the same, who would win? What if Junior dos Santos were the same weight as Georges Saint-Pierre? GSP would probably take him down and control him to a win like he always does.
P4P is the way to get rid of the huge difference that size and strength makes in fighting and focusing only on the skills of the fighters. If you could make them all exactly the same size and weight and made them fight in a "super grand prix" to the end, who would be the last man standing? And number two, three and four?
Some further clarifications: I kept Jon Jones out of my P4P rankings because he is 6'5 with an 84" reach, greater than any HW, and he beats on 5'11 LHW with 75" reaches. We have no idea how great he truly is until he moves to HW and fights guys who can hit him back. And yes, I know that reach is not included in weight, but in Jon Jones' case it is relevant because it is such a gargantuan advantage.
I ranked Anderson Silva higher than GSP because, even though GSP has fought tougher opposition overall, I hate GSP's fighting style and he never finishes fights. Anderson's opposition has been somewhat inferior to GSP's, but Anderson is far more exciting to watch and finishes most of his fights unlike GSP who usually wins via decision. Hence, Anderson deserves to be ranked higher even though I am not a fan of either.
Also, Nick Diaz deserves to be ranked #3 even though he lost his last fight because he has destroyed everyone he fought(including BJ Penn) and I don't think that losing a single controversial fight means anything.
