Carlos is the man...

Not often you see 72-year old men playing the role of an Action-Hero!
Not many can do that, but the old guard from the 80's

I think it is name recognition. If a new breed of action hero were to play in this movie, like say a Steve Namat, I don't think it would go over as well.
-
Think of the action heros of that era, who are the new breed of action heros? I cant think of anyone these days thats a action hero that makes you want to go and pump the guns or go and punch a bag like these guys did. Sure they might not have been the best actors but the were an insperation. :-[

There isn't too many out there. I mean some have been in action flicks but I don't consider them action heroes. Tom Cruise, the Jason Bourne dude, Stone Cold.
-
72!!!!!!!!!
-
I owned all his old movies growing up (VHS). The karate ones, before he started playing soldier.
Best film: Code of Silence
Honorable Mention: An Eye for an Eye, Forced Vengeance

I don't know if you aren't including him because he is in this movie, but Statham still rocks. Killer Elite and The Mechanic are good recent action flicks on top of his older stuff.

He joins the expendables because they have good benefits and the health plan doesn't require any co-pays or referrals for visits to specialists.

No way, Lone Wolf Mcquade is all you need. We wore that thing out on VHS back in `85.

I guess tom cruise, he doesnt make me want to go to the gym neither does Matt damon good flicks the Misson impossibles and the bournes but they are lacking the ninja skills and big arms of past action stars.
The rock doesnt seem to be able to pull it off, and a few years ago Vin desial was touted as the next arnold but that never amounted to anything much hike the size of his arms.
Sam Worthington was alright in that terminator movie and avatar but wouldnt class him as a action hero, build or skill wise.
Christian bale is a good batman, but as for shila lebuf (transformers) and that spider man guy they all kind of suck.
I guess movies have changed and we expect a good story mixed with realistic main man. the days of the huge body counts are over :(

All three Bourne flicks featured some pretty awesome ninja skills by Bourne. No big arms though.

I can appreciate both older and newer movies. As for Mission Impossible, I much prefer the original series from the 60's to the piles of feces that star Tom Cruise.
-
Matt Damon, Tom Cruise, Vin Diesel and the current "actionheroes" are phoggots and go out fatboys compared to the actionheroes of the 80's.
Today's heroes are so metrosexual compared to Sly, Arnold, Chuck etc back in the day.

I agree. But I'd argue that they're both more and less realistic at the same time. More realistic in the sense that it's not likely that a CIA officer would look like Arnold in True Lies. But less realistic in the sense that their portrayals as hyper-invincible "dodge bullets and have a 6-on-1 fistfight demolishing all opponents while at the same time drinking a coffee frappucino and not spilling a drop" are... well... not very realistic.
Is a good story and a realistic portrayal without CGI for the sake of CGI, without wirework for the sake of wirework and without hyperbole for the sake of hyperbole so much to ask?

Best Chuck Norris flick ever. I still watch the whole thing through when it comes on TV.

Well, do the majority of the people today want as much realism as possible in their movies these days?
Rocky, Rambo, almost all of Arnolds movies, Jean-Claudes movies, Chucks movies etc were unrealistic as hell but VERY popular back in the 80's
Did we care less about realism back then?
The society and way of thinking is changing of course.
Back then, Heroism and well-trained Actionheroes were enough to inspire the teenagers and enough entertainment for the adults, but does everyone crave 100 % realism these days?
Neither Tom, Matt or Sam Worthington would motivate anyone to start training for example.
The heroes of the 80's did more than just entertain, they were an inspiration as well. Maybe even rolemodels for some.
Some even started with Martial Arts thanks to Chuck, Bruce Lee, Jean-Claude etc or bodybuilding thanks to Arnold, Sly etc
Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Sam Worthington, Vin Diesel etc doesn't motivate for shit.
I mean, even now, today, i find entertainment in Clint Eastwoods older movies, Chucks older movies like Lone Wolf McQuade, Octagon, Missing in Action etc
Hell, even Mel Gibson (in Mad Max 2) was a greater inspiration than todays "heroes"

Doesn't it? It was the same director that did "Above the Law" and "The Fugitive" - great action guy. Way underrated.

My mom took me to see that at the theater. She loved it. Great bar fight scene.

I recommend everyone check out Bodyguard from Beijing (also known as The Defender) starring Jet Li. Now that's a lovely film! It might even move you to tears (at the end).

My childhood action hero Van Damme returns to the big screen baby! He was born to play the "bad guy"!
There doesn't even need to be a plot :D

Their character names are priceless.

It's got everyone. Fuck fat boy Seagal. You notice no fat asses in that lineup for a reason. I bet they left Seagal out for that reason alone.

Yep, MJW flies under the radar...

Snipes and MJW should do a film (buddy or good vs evil) like a Bad Boys III
how did JCVD last movie do? The one where he was a mentor.

Dragon Eyes. It was a decent flick, although the true headliner was Cung Le. Van Damme was in the movie for about 10 minutes. :'( Good news is that he has plenty of movies in the pipeline.

How can you say that? All the old guys are still doing action flicks. Watch some of Van Damme or Lundgren's direct to dvd stuff. They are still pretty good.

Ha! thats right!

I might be wrong, but I can't believe a guy like John Wayne would scam off a piece of gym equipment like chuck Norris has been doing for the past couple of decades. Norris for sure is a tuff bastard...But truth be told, he's a Jay Cutler snake oil salesman. :-\
