You have no clue! Jerry Garcia is one of the baddest guitar players of all time. You don't get the experience of the Grateful Dead of the radio. You have to see a show or listen to one.

Wes you are a smart man but you already knew that right? Dylan I might argue with. Not a great voice but an iconic song writer. That's right the musicians actually wrote their songs at one point

I appreciate the musicianship of the Dead. Just not my cup of tea
i went to one Dead show, almost passed out from the stench of BO and lice. i did enjoy the marajuana though
Bob Dylan u are joking
Dylan was great. an amazing song writer and musician. his voice was different. He is unlistenable now. but one of, if not the, most influencial rock stars ever.

Robert Plant. No contest.

I can appreciate that. I dont know when the show was but I'm sure towards the end, they were a mess. Just people going to get fucked up and Jerry wasted on heroin. Musically a phenominal band.

yeah, he's 47 now. from 88 to 97 he was ridiculous. Superunknown was their 4th record.
he's nothing like he was, but the man can still sing. and they are tight as shit now, music wise

Don't get me wrong, Soundgarden is one of my all time faves. While we're on the 90s, how about Layne Staley or Chris Robinson?
-

They both had distinctive tones, and were great singers in their own right. but if we are talking the guy with the most unreal voice...they aren't in the same league as a prime Cornell.
this tune is IMO the best rock vocal i have ever heard. I listen to this every week
-
Amazing tune.
-
No one has mentioned Van Morrison
when I think Rock Singer I'd have to go with Freddie Mercury or Robert Plant

They took a definitive turn for the worse after The Joshua Tree. Bono seemed to have become enlightened god-like in his own mind at that point. Music went to shit, Zooropa, ::)

Absolutely nothing in U2's later records come close to these songs, nothing.
1. Where The Streets Have No Name
2. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
3. With Or Without You
4. Bullet The Blue Sky
5. Running To Stand Still

Sugar Mountain, Needle And The Damage Is Done, two great songs by Neil.

because he has many other songs other than "18 and life" and "I remember you". Used to be a great singer.
Another dude is Mark Slaughter. Sucks now but was kickass.
-
Myles Kennedy is also sick...from 3:25 on is nuts

Awesome fucking tune!

There is no "best", just peoples favorite... (Jim Morrison rules) !
MY faves:
Morrison
Dio
Danny Joe Brown (Hatchet)
Paul DiAnno (Early maiden)
Phil Mogg (UFO)
Eirc Adams (ManOwaR)
Geddy Lee
-
joe cocker is great indeed
-
GG Allin
-
Ronnie James Dio
-
Corey Taylor. Lead singer of both Slipknot and Stone sour
Corey really is so good if you listen to all the stuff he has done. Serious talent. I do like Cornell a lot also. One could throw Ozzy into the ring here, lots of nice work going back to the killer early Sabbath stuff.
-
You should define the term 'greatest' and some of these singers people are posting are metal, not rock. If you want to get into the metal arena most power metal or classic metal singers can blow away virtually any rock singer with their technical abilities, but that's the nature of the music. I'm speaking in terms of technical ability.
Daniel Heiman
Michael Kiske
Timo Kotipelto
Can't forget a young Halford, Dickinson, Tate etc etc...I could list a hundred great vocalists.
-
kevin levrone
-
1. Elvis
2. Jim Morrison
3. Mick Jagger
4. Phil Anselmo
-
Man I could never just list one.
I love some of the singers with a higher voice like Plant or Dickerson{I saw Maiden tue night and fuck can Bruce still sing! 8)}
but I also love singers with grit in their voice like Greg Allman or Ronnie Van Zandt.
....and che is right,Elvis has a great voice.
-
Elvis.
-
Bobby Plant. No contest.
-
Elvis.
You can't be the best singing stolen compositions. Next!
-
Perry is that guy from Journey, right? Was he that much better than those other stadium rock bands..?
-
It's personal preference but mine is Van Morrison followed by Phil Lynott.
-
Bob Dylan
-
Whether Journey (as a band) was a better band or not is highly debatable. Certainly, they had their time.
The fact that Perry, in his prime, was hands-down one of, if not the greatest, voice in rock is virtually undeniable. When you ask vocalists, those in the know often cite his voice then (certainly not now - his chops are gone) as being perfect. His pitch was amazing. The power of voice was strong. And his ability to move to different octaves without having to falsetto was amazing. So much range and depth.
My second choice was early Geoff Tate. Also a brilliant voice, though he liked to abuse falsetto. But his range and pitch were so precise.
Then, of course, Miljenko Matijevic, from Steelheart. He's my third choice.
And my crazy choice is Joe Cocker. I just love the guys voice, however unpopular.
Both Tenors. Cornell is a baritone that could go way lower and higher with far more power. from a techinical standpoint you really can't fuck with the guy.
Yes I know...what a fanboy. I think the dude is badass
-
Manuel/Danko/Helm together...
-
Whoever said Dylan needs to give their head a shake, the guy can certainly write a great song, but he can't sing for toffee.
Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury are probably the top two, but I can't believe no-one's mentioned David Coverdale yet?
???
-
Dylan can't sing for toffee.
Saw him in concert and it was painful. The couple with us stayed in the hallway...we all left early. Horrible.
-

He's awesome. Though in terms of classical voice technique, Bruce Dickinson ranks even higher.
But rock singing has always been about more than technique. Projecting power and sex are at least as important. In that respect, Elvis is way, way up there. But I stand by Percy.
"I AM A GOLDEN GOD!"

4. Phil Anselmo
lol. One of my favorite bands ever, and he actually can sing when he wants to, but....no.
-
Cornell was the first one I thought of. He might not be the greatest of all time but he is definitely the greatest IMO from the 80s- present day
-
No doubt - Cornell is an amazing singer. His voice is amazing, and the fact that he hasn't blown it yet means he's a genetic freak (although I don't think he can sign Birth Ritual anymore, which is a freaskish vocal display - listen to it if you haven't. He's off the charts amazing on it). He's not in my top 5, but certainly top 10 for me.
If you like Cornell, you might also like Ian Thornley, of Big Wreck. I love what he does on this song to close it out. Very Cornell-esque, but in his own way. Gritty and melodic in very masculine fashion.
cool song. dude can sing, I'm always up for shit i don't know
Yeah dude I heard "birth ritual" 20 years ago when it came out...Killer song. I got into Soundgarden when they released Louder than Love in 89. Early Cornell was a bit screamy, all highs all the time, as impressive as it was, it was a bit much... but he was just a fucking kid...then he really started SINGING on Badmotorfinger. and to be honest, I think his best singing ever is with Temple of the Dog
EDIT : That's why i posted the "hands all over" video.....I was pissed about it 20 years ago when pearl jam ripped them off....LOL
-
You can question whether he's rock or folk, but has no one yet mentioned Jeff Buckley?
Haunting, and quite amazing. This song is one of the most beautifully sung songs of all time.
His range and ability to hit 4 octaves is retarded. He was great. Shame he's gone.
Oh yeah...."grace" is amazing
-
Greg Allman................pe rfect gravely blues/rock voice.
-
lol. One of my favorite bands ever, and he actually can sing when he wants to, but....no.
hung out and partied with the man a few years back...cool as shit and yes, back in the day, everybody wanted to be like him!!
Tough as nails and voice of power!
-
and to be honest, I think his best singing ever is with Temple of the Dog
Yes.
-
Janis Joplin could belt out a tune with the best of them.
-
Bruce Dickinson & Myles Kennedy are right up there IMO
-
Good to see other dudes digging Cornell.
another entry from me, though not a vocal powerhouse...would be Thom Yorke from Radiohead, just because his voice is so pure and distinctive . and they are just ridiculously talented and out there.
I listen to a radiohead song or two every day of my life
This is the best thing posted on Youtube.

Im going with Kid Rock...
Because Rock is his name
BOOM!

Achtung was pretty peaky, too.
Achtung is the best album in their catalog.
and they have many incredible songs post joshua tree, just not as radio friendly:
One (maybe the best song ever)
mysterious ways
even better than the real thing
the fly
stay
lemon
please
gone
beautiful day
city of blinding lights
vertigo (which was a massive #1 hit BUT billboard wasn't including digi downloads at that point)
Bono only uses his voice to punctuate songs, if he wanted to be the focal point of the music, he could be (like most of the singers listed in this thread), but U2 are the consummate "band" and they all have their roles. Soundgarden is about chris cornell, and he is amazing, no doubt. U2 is all about one, singular sound, and are a much more "rhythm" based band.
This vid, and in particular, and bono in particular 410-450, showcase their rare abilities:
Another note, jeff and his dad tim buckley are amazing singers.
And marvin gaye was amazing and stevie wonder can still bring it. he sang for about 10 seconds at the grammy's this year, and sounded better than everyone else winning awards/or that was nominated. he has more talent in one finger than almost every artist performing today.

you know what's funny about the comparison of Cornell and Bono ?
During an interview , Cornell was asked about his skills as a guitar player, and he said " yeah when i was younger, I was impressed with virtouso muscianship and guys that played really hard stuff...but as you grow as a musician and songwriter, you stop listening to Hendrix and check out what U2 is doing."
Great band, no doubt.

TNT was once amazing. But for me, because of Ronni Le Tekro. Harnell is great (solo now, of course, and can't say I've heard his voice in years) but I always found him too high.

I agree. While metal is a form of rock, it's unclear whether we're including heavy metal singers.
As well, are we factoring in charisma, stage presentation and uniqueness?
Regardless, Daniel, once of the amazing Lost Horizon (and a few other cool groups), is a freak singer.

Oh, its an incredible song, but again, not radio friendly.

bono - shit vocalist. u2- over-rated band with a guitarist who relies far to much on effects. The only positive i can say of them is they have a decent rhythm section.
boner aside, some great names mentioned in this thread.
Mercury is numero uno. I've never seen the big fuss with Robert Plant. I'd take Ian Gillan over him to name but one.
Chris Cornell is probably th ebest of the last 20/30 years. I caught Soundgarden at a festival earlier this month and he was still sounding good. A great, distinctive voice on him and the whole band were tight.
I think when it comes to rock bands, the hardest thing to find is a real good vocalist. I've seen/heard a lot of good guitarists, bassists and drummers in local/small time bands, but i can count on one hand the number of outstanding vocalists.
-
bono - shit vocalist
Watch the video for "Bad" a few posts back. Legendary.

paul rodgers.

While metal is a form of rock, it's unclear whether we're including heavy metal singers.
If that's the case:
Rob Halford (Judas Priest) Dude still has it.
Dio (Rainbow/Black Sabbath/Dio)
Geoff Tate (but Queensryche is horrible these days)
Jon Oliva (Savatage)
Midnight (Crimson Glory)
Ray Adler (Fates Warning)
What the hell, throw Ozzy in there, too. Dude still can rock.
P.S. Never even heard of Lost Horizon.

Tate was ousted from QR and quite frankly, it's about time. He turned QR into a horrible alt-pop band.
New QR singer is from Crimson Glory, go figure. Called themselves Rising West till they announced giving asshole Tate the boot. They're going to record new material and go back to their metal roots.
Here's one of the best singers you've never heard of. The part after the solo is crazy.
Fast Forward to 5:40 or so on this one.....damn!
-
yeah man ronnie james of dio rocks, luv the song rainbow in the dark
-
Yngiwe, I usually stay on top of the metal news but totally missed that Tate is out of Q-Ryche. Wow. Just read a few articles. We'll see how it goes. Something had to change. They have sucked for too long.
And, wow, that unknown dude definitely has some pipes!

:o :o :o :o :o. LEMMY "Motorhead"
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-*.Kurt "Nirvana"

Eddie.

Not a huge fan of Slipknot or Stone Sour, but Corey Taylor can fucking sing. Probably has one of the best voices in modern metal IMHO. Deep, decent range, can push his voice into and out of overdrive/screaming easily and fluidly.
-
Eddie.
Man, I fucking cant stand Pearl Jam.

Meatloaf is too Broadway for my taste. He sure can sing like a bat outta hell though. I guess I like 2 out of 3 of his songs which ain't bad.

Freddie mercury
first one that came into my head X2
-
Mick Jagger
Brian Wilson
Janis Joplin
-
Was always a fan of David Coverdale and Dee Snyder
-
Wow, that new Queensryche singer is awesome... Tate wont be missed...
-
Lead singer of "The Baby's" and Christopher Cross. Their voices sound like a combo of Jesus and Angels.
-
Eddie.
:o :D :)
-
Steve Grimmett. Don't let the 80's mullet-extensions fool you. The man has an incredible set of pipes.
Tony Martin. Most underrated vocalist around and one of my all-time favorites.

Bob Dylan
Neil Young
Stevie Nicks
Jerry Garcia
In no particular order.

Not sure if this is a joke, none of these are rock singers.

Lost horizon is the greatest thing ever, they make Hammerfall look and un-warriorlike! They used to be called Highlander and they're obsessed with immortality and battles and stuff, their lead singer (Ethereal Magnanimous?) was amazing before he quit.
-

If we're talking Greatest Rock Singer it has to be someone like Mercury, Plant, McCartney, someone big and iconic. For me I think of the old Wembley Stadium sold out, Freddie prancing around like a nutter kicking so much ass it's untrue and Brian May ripping it up like nobody's business. Steven Tyler and Axel Rose are also great and that Stadium-rock tradition.
If we're talking most galvanising battle-cries that the common man probably hasn't even heard of then these are two of my personal favourites.
Voice perhaps only bettered by this guy:
-
In his prime Meatloaf was 2nd to none.
Good shout
-
Veronica Freeman.

;D
Floor Jansen.

I knew we'd get into this shit haha, okay a bit obvious but you asked for it:
-
To me though this is the real shit, amazing songs, amazing voice, unbelievable talent playing the piano like that at the same time, disgusting ability, tear-jerking amazingness in places, raw rocknroll goddery right here. Way more sincere than Bono,
-
I knew we'd get into this shit haha, okay a bit obvious but you asked for it:
Just a tad obvious, haha! They're not the same since Tarja left.
-
Freddy Mercury!
-
Brent Smith
-
Yes yes yes!!!
Brent Smith is my favourite singer right now, my ears have been demolished by Sound of Madness since its release! Saw them in Glasgow in 2009 and they were outstanding. Great shout my friend.
-
What do you define as rock? That guy from Foreigner had some good pipes.
-
For metal, have to throw Bruce Dickinson in there, too (Iron Maiden).
-
For metal, have to throw Bruce Dickinson in there, too (Iron Maiden).
Distinctive as hell... No one else sounds like Bruce, but I don't know if I'd say he's a great singer.
Still, his distinct sound is certainly the biggest reason for Maiden's success. Their 1st 2 albums without him were less than stellar and the albums after he left for a bit were also average.

Dickinson had an awesome voice when he was younger but lost his range shortly after Number of the Beast.
