Title: Recession proof careers
Post by: Big N on August 17, 2012, 05:09:31 PM
I think IT and Medical careers definitely qualify as recession proof jobs. What's your take. By the way G4P isn't included into the list!

IT is recession proof but your only as good as your last project. You have to continually be involved in the latest and greatest solutions. The amount of time keeping up with technology is never ending.  There are many IT people who cannot find work.  The problem is that technology is replacing people and instead of having an administer for a few applications or servers you now have one person expected to take care of everything.

IT sucks and I would not have went in the field if I had to do it over again.  I would go to nursing school and decide if I wanted to go further but the medical field is where it is at.  The human body never changes and instead of working with IT geeks I could fuck those nurses in a back room.

Car Sales. The demand never subsides, and if you know what you're doing you can easily make $60-$80K. If you quit or get fired you're working at the next dealership the next day, or the next hour if you like. And you don't have to tell people you're a nurse.

Finance/accounting

Every business needs accountant even the ones that are going through bankruptcy need accountants.

Financial advisor: in the rough times ppl are looking for ways to maintain/lose less of their investments, in the good times ppl are looking to maximize their investments.

Most ppl dont have a clue on either of these topics especially accounting(taxes, financial statements etc)

more money in finance in general unless you get to the upper levels of accounting but Id say accounting is probably more recession proof.

I work as a wastewater treatment plant operator.

as the recession hit in 2008 I was working my way up the ladder getting raises each year as I did.

worked out well.

everyone needs to drink clean water and have their wastewater properly treated and discharged back to the environment.

so, the environmental feild is a good career to be in these days.

Correction officers in NJ whether at the State or County level make good money. Most make over 100K.  In the county I live in it was on the first page of the paper how most made over 120K.  I know in rural states they make crap.

Meh it depends on  what you consider an IT job, it can be a pretty  broad set of jobs.

Anyhow this concept of recession is questionable. Most people are listing government jobs. nurse, cop, etc as recession proof, odds are with massive governments cuts just around the corner this is all at risk.

My cousin has been waiting for a job with corrections or something for 18 months because there is a government hiring freeze in southern canada, despite being a top graduate hiring choice..

Uhhh  YES.  You mean to tell me if I worked for a company that is still using NT 4 network because that is what works for them,  then I should have no problem getting a job elsewhere?  You are delusional if you think that.  There is a reason our certifications retire.  New technology has to be learned if you want to keep up in the field.  It never ends for the ambitious IT people.  Luckily I am not that ambitious anymore so I'll probably be screwed if I lose my job.

property manager= paint some walls, do some plumbing occaisionly , rarely any electrical, a little tinkering with the a/c unit and heat, fix some floors with plywood and screws throw on sheet vinyl, go to court when they dont pay, collect rent 600 a month for a 40,000 house you buy on forecloser

is get rich slow at first until you buy another one and another one then you got multiple rents coming in a month if you do up the house right they might stay in 1-5 years or more

Stop drinking the cool aid and think for yourself. His tax return was completely legal unlike Obama appointed Secretary of the Treasury who didn't pay social security taxes for years. There isn't one democrat that can say he did anything illegal on the tax returns. I would like to see Obama's tax return when he bought that 4 million dollar house while he was a community organizer right out of law school. Guess what? He won't release them.

All I know is many tax cheats in the middle class love to have American Flags and support the military stickers on their work trucks when they claim they make 25K when they are making 100K. That is illegal in anyone's book.

I also believe in a flat tax with no deductions. Everyone who make pay check should pay the same percentage. It will never happen because the rich and poor alike will protest when taxes will actually go down for the middle class.

So you think a guy like Mitt built his fortune by playing by the rules? Well, okay whatever helps you sleep at night.  Take a close look at the Lehman case,  illegal accounting practices, moving money back and forth between international banks to overvalue the company and defraud investors and the CEO goes before congress and swears  he knew nothing about it.  And nobody is going to jail or even being prosecuted.  And you know what, this sort of thing is way more common than the guy on the street ever knows.  And fat cat Mitt wants to  relax the rules to make it easier to do things like this, Why?  Because he is one of them.
If Mitt is the kind of guy you want running your country then have at it.  I'm not American, I just find your politics  interesting.  I always question the motives of a man who has great wealth and still hungers for power.  I can say for a fact that it is not to improve the lot of the less fortunate.  Being head of state is not the same thing as running a corporation.

Medical field.

Even that has its drawbacks.
Several hospitals near me have closed down in the last several years. Obviously, the remaining facilities could not absorb everybody, which meant a lot of medical personnel were without jobs for a while.

Currently, they have completed building of a new hospital in the surrounding area with another on the way. Even so, the medical field is over-saturated here, and it's very tough to find a job; especially for a new grad.

sorry I just saw this now.

Chloramines (chlorine + ammonia) is used mainly in water treatment for disinfection from the time the water leaves the plant to the time it comes out of your tap.

yes, it creates potentially cancer causing byproducts called tri/di halomethanes.

however, it acts as a good disinfectant that remains effective if the water runs into contaminating bacteria on the way to your house. they last longer than a free chlorine residual which is desirable. Free chlorine is a better disinecfecant but it gets used up very easily

other methods of disinfection don't do this. they have no 'lasting' power.

so, yes, I tend to favour chloramine. the risks of cancer being caused by these byproducts is, from what I understand, to be virtually neglegable.

people don't get sick from properly treated water. they get sick from drinking contaminated water

too many people....not enough jobs....

Very untrue.

There aren't enough qualified people for the jobs out there.

Some bitch spending $100k on a philosophy degree from Harvard complaining there is no work for her.  NO SHIT.  Bitch should have studied something that mattered.

That's a VERY big part of it.
However, I also know plenty of people entering the market with practical education & skill sets who are having a tough time landing work; including the medical field.

I think IT as a field is recession proof... there is always a need for tech people everywhere, however some fields will certainly be outsourced to lower cost locations if that is possible.

I live in a City of a million people and the oil & gas sector is the main driver of the economy here.  When the recession hit here in early 2009 a lot of oil & gas companies had to postpone or cancel projects.  They laid off a lot of positions, Engineers, Geologists, and a lot of IT people.  To this day the oil & gas sector hasn't come back to it's former boom.  It's growing, yes.  But not like it was pre-recession.  There are plenty of IT people here still without decent paying jobs due to supply demand.  There is a need for certain amount of tech people everywhere, yes.  But that doesn't mean all of the qualified people will find work in a recession.

Haha, I was about to quote your post ubercunt before you deleted it.

A home worth "200,000" bucks eh? Did your wife buy that for you, wanker? Didn't you tell us a few months ago that you were so poor you were working in a "food plant" in the most basic of manual jobs?

You'll have to survive on the back of your wife for quite a few years, in a recession noone hires psychologists to tell their problems to, that's only possible in a boom. You're like a toy husband :) Useless and disposable. So much for virility, eh?

You undereducated ponce.

lol a longer while back he posted that he rents an apartment for $600/month and moved to Canada from Europe due immigrants taking jobs away.  Now about a year or so later he claims he has a house that's fully paid off  ::)

I am seriously thinking about driving trucks at the mines here.  Alot of females are getting jobs at the mines now and the money is awesome.  You can choose the shifts you want too.  I could work it in with my daughter...she turns 16 next year so will be more independant.

I m nearing 35 and i own my house without any debts, dont worry for me, homo. Let's see how both you and I go thru that recession and let's count the points in a decade from now. I sincerely hope you own your own house lol. I know a lot of clowns like you of any age who think they rule the world at one point of their existence, full of debts, only to end pennyless with only their eyes to cry.

Haha, you forgot to ad the leased Mercedes parked in a car port :D

If that's what you want to do get in now, when it slows down they will lay off the last few waves of new hires...

Not everyone is viewed as a quota like you are.  Face it, White males have it the worst these days.  I'm in favor of best person for the job.  Not, "hey lets pic the gay mulatto with downs so we can get a tax break".

wow..here we go again with the old "poor old white males have it the toughest" bullshit...and your implication is that minorities or the handicapped are taking jobs away from whites.,...classic racist nonsense again.....the fact is, white males are still on top but they are having a tougher time landing and keeping jobs due to the huge influx and education of WHITE WOMEN.....white women are getting the jobs that white men used to hold and then divorcing you guys because many of you guys can no longer keep up with the earning power of your wives....

sorry to have to break the truth to you guys.....let the whining begin

Thanks, Hulk.  My pop has been griping about chloramine in his town's water for awhile.  He's a clever guy but always been a little high strung and I'm keeping an eye out for a case of the old man crazies.

Go where the jobs are... That's sometimes what you have to do.

I've only ever met one person who's worked in a genuinely recession proof industry. She was a sales rep for a company that made ball bearings of all things. And they've never, ever had a bad year for sales. Forget your IT positions that need constant upgrading of skills. Get in on selling the most unsexy product of all - but a product that will always be in constant demand. She admitted that it was ridiculously easy to meet her targets every year. It's just something that no one ever thinks of as a career.

One doesnt generally buy a house the second they get here.

Not that I dont hate the shit, but 200 grand hardly makes one rich, he probably got out of a over priced market in paris who knows.

Had it my job in the Internet industry. Constantly tied to work through email and crazy hours.

But, this market is the worst I've seen since getting out of college in '92.

Would love a change, but pickens are slim our there!

I couldn't imagine being a kid coming out of college now, all wet behind the ears.

I think IT and Medical careers definitely qualify as recession proof jobs. What's your take. By the way G4P isn't included into the list!

- Discuss

IT is one of the first places hit when layoffs are being planned.

Medicine is completely prone to the recession as Corporations reduce or cut benefits, private medical practices see rapid decline in patients, hospital census is down.  People do the bare minimum medically speaking and only companies like Tylenol continue on strong since people opt for an OTC fix.

The most recession proof career around is health care....its why I went back to school for my degree in Health Care Management.  Its also why I sell health and medical products.

The fact is that people will always need it and there are always jobs available
