Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, died Saturday, weeks after heart surgery and days after his 82nd birthday.
http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/08/25/13478643-astronaut-neil-armstrong-first-man-to-walk-on-moon-dies-at-age-82?lite
Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, and he radioed back to Earth the historic news of "one giant leap for mankind." He spent nearly three hours walking on the moon with fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.
Armstrong and hiw wife, Carol, married in 1999, made their home in the Cincinnati suburb of Indian Hill, but he had largely stayed out of public view in recent years.
He spoke at Ohio State University during a February event honoring fellow astronaut John Glenn and the 50th anniversary of Glenn becoming the first American to orbit the Earth. In May, Armstrong joined Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida to support the opening of The National Flight Academy, which aims to teach math and science to kids through an aviation-oriented camp.

Remarkable man.
He witnessed, and foremost lived, the most interesting times in the human history. And truly in the middle of where the action took place.
Hard to imagine better career.

Rip. or PIP-weights only feel like 1/6th on the moon.

3,2,1...... conspiracy theorists will claim he was killed before he admitted he never went to the moon.
Dude kind of disappeared after the moon walk, stayed out of the public eye. Most would have milked it for all it was worth and reaped the rewards. Something doesn't add up. I'm just saying.

RIP

The next guy to come close to Armstrong's achievement will be the first man to set foot on Mars.
ukjeff, I do find it strange he kept himself to himself for so much of his life while his compadre Buzz Aldrin is a well known face happy to talk about it. But who knows what effect walking on the Moon and looking back down at the Earth might have on a man.
I've always wondered what Michael Collins' take on the whole thing was, sitting up in orbit while his two crewmates stepped on to another world.

in 1969 Twitter was slow because of dial-up speeds, so his blog never really "took off".

P.I.P the guy had balls of steel

I'm sure Neil croaked when he saw the bill for the Mars Rover. :-X

I don't think we could get to the moon today let alone 50 years ago. I would never say this in public but part of me wonders if it was all a show. I know they had major problems with the lunar lander the week up to the launch then all of a sudden it was good to go? If one little thing went wrong it would have been the end for them all. For example the ignition of the landing craft from the lunar surface only had one shot, one shot at pecisely the right time! Was technology really that advanced 50 years ago? Armstrong was a true warrior and a soldier, but soldiers follow orders.

Well, he did open a Neverland for kids after the moonwalk, but i can understand why he wanted to live in seclusion due to his acquired taste of younger lads.

The calculations required to pull off such a "feat" really aren't that special... could easily be done by the computers of that era. The ignition of rockets wasn't exactly groundbreaking, either.

I'm afraid the landing on Moon was real shit.
Yankee would have certainly been exposed at the times if they didn't really do it. One could assume the journey was followed pretty closely.
-
He'll be remembered until the end of us or our civilization. That's as close to immortality as it gets.
-
reptilians finally got him
-
2 armstrongs go down the same week
-
So some guy that pretended to walk on the moon all the while being in a movie studio died ?
Rip Mr. Actor-naut.

Capricorn One, man. Capricorn One. Lots of secrets in the USA. Still don't know who killed the Kennedys.

Hahaha!!! Dude... The Russians would have LOVED to expose us, but they never did... not even a thought.
Plus, ALL of the people who would have had to have been involved in this "charade" and not a single person has come out even on their deathbed and said it was faked.
Cut the shit.

What's the difference between Neil Armstrong and Michael Jackson?

I personally conversed at length with the engineer who designed the video link used to bring the video back to earth...yes they did go to the Moon.

I liked his earlier music better than his later stuff. PIP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_Laser_Ranging_experiment
The ongoing Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment measures the distance between the Earth and the Moon using laser ranging. Lasers on Earth are aimed at retroreflectors planted on the Moon during the Apollo program, and the time for the reflected light to return is determined.
