Title: Best A-10 Close air support video
Post by: Stark on August 27, 2012, 08:44:07 AM
Just found a lost video which we lost a long time ago, its very intense.
Guys on the ground got in in a firefight with the Taliban and called in close air support gun runs from two A-10's - the person you hear on the air is a JTAC (joint tactical Air controller) the reason he sounds a bit out of breath is that they are moving backwards (south) to give the A-10's room to engage the taliban who are hiding in the grove to the north.
The JTAC has to coordinate two A-10's close air support which is stressful to say the least, at some stage you can clearly see a Humvee so you can imaging how danger close the gunrun was.

Who do the Taliban call when they need Air support?

As much as I despise the enemy, it is amazing they can fight with 1950's technology or worse and limited resources against us.

Funny thing is that the U.S disarmed the small fleet of aircraft that was in the Taliban's possession in the inital stages of the Afghanistan campaign. Yes, the Taliban did have aircraft...But a couple reasons for their slight advantage is: (A) Geographical knowledge advantage(hell it is their back yard) and (B), the ability to blend in with the non-terrorist civilian.

My buddy who is USAF TACP has stories just like this. When we had to attend a formal class on base, the instructor kept getting pissed because people would always him about CAS stories during instruction time. To give an idea of how aggressive those gun runs are, he spoke about a training mission when an A-10 struck a pole that was on top of a outdoor shed during a gun run...the pole was only 12ft off the ground. :o
