Title: Is fasting and I.F. just another fad, or will it change everything?
Post by: Master Blaster on September 02, 2012, 04:44:01 PM
I think fasting and intermittent fasting is going to radically change the health and fitness of millions of people. But I've gotten swept up in fads before. Whats the group consensus, same old same old, or are we in for a massive sea change?

contrary to what falcon says, under-eating is very good and healthy for you

peeps with lower bmi's live longer than peeps with higher bmi's, even if that higher bmi is composed mostly of muscle and not fat

the body doesn't like to carry excess weight, even if it's in the form of muscle

I eat a vegan lunch and I eat anything I want for dinner. No breakfast unless I have to lift some weights. Sometimes I feel like I'm high.  :o

Maybe that's all the old THC being released from old body fat stores being harvested.

Basically, you pick a certain time to eat your allotted calories for whatever it is you're trying to accomplish. So If you choose to fast for a 16 hour period that means you give yourself an 8 hour time frame where you consume your daily calories. Some people just choose to skip breakfast and "break the fast" around lunch and begin the fast around 8pm.

There's a program out there (Lean Gains) with an IF that you can look into with diet and training tips here:

I have no clue about the fad bullshit but here is my problem.

If I don`t eat I can do OK, but once I start eating its like I want to eat until my appetite is satiated.
Fasting isn`t the problem.

Yeah it reinforces binge eating in some people. You don't need to go this extreme to achieve your goals just like you don't need to go zero carb, zero fat, eating religiously every 3 hours, etc.

This is just another way to skin a cat.

Its all about what suits you and what is most convenient for you.
In my opinion IF gives you a lot of freedom and your not obsessed with food all the time. You learn that food is fuel for your body and that's all it is.
Its simplifies fat loss for some people instead of complicates it.
You learn that you won't die if you don't eat every 3 hours and that you can stay without food. (Mental hunger vs physiological hunger)
Depending on which type of IF lifestyle you choose, you can have a "slip up" here and there and not worry about it.
IF totally helps you not to have OCD with your food.
Elevated GH levels in a fasted state helps burn fat a bit quicker and your concentration levels are much higher in a fasted state.

Yeah.... but when you're looking forward to that meal after depriving your body for so long anyone is likely to gorge. Sure, we did this back in the day when we actually had to hunt but nowadays we simply go our fridge for the next meal. I know you're just starting this out and it seems like the best thing on the planet....give it sometime.  ;D

I understand your point, but so far I'm getting good results and because of my body type (having a slow metabolism etc) this seems like a reasonable lifestyle for me to remain lean without totally depriving myself forever

Seriously, the guy backs up everything he says with scientific research and tears through all the popular diet fads.  Plus he's an Aussie and fucking hilarious.  His book the Great Cholesterol Con is probably the single most important book anyone can ever read.

fat people where raised by fat people. Fat daddy and mommy used to binge to feel better , just like their own daddy and mommy did one generation before them, and so on. After several generations bodies , genetics are deeply modified and you end with fat people. They ll meet with someone as fat as them, breed, and produce an offspring, and they will teach that offspring the same bad behaviors, and so on and so.

Dont want to get fat? dont listen to the LEARNED behavior that tells you "i feel hungry so i have to eat some sugar". Fact is when you re alrdy overweight, the message sent by your brain which is an habit, and not a need, is false. You already have billions of calories in excess in your fat, you cannot be "hungry". You should fast and consume the calories that are already there. You only have to drink some water, as simple as that. You have to unlearn behaviors, habits. You have to re wire the connexions in your brain. Then you get slim, you breed with a slim woman, and the curse ends.

Yeah, that's the IF diet that has caught on as of late which is called lean gains. Apperantly there's quite a few health benefits that the fasted state provides. I haven't looked into them but I think Necrosis has posted some studies on the nutrition board and I'm sure the leangains guy has posted some on his website also.

So with that leangains IF diet you train 3 days a week and eat 20% above maintenance during those days. The other 4 days you're eating 20% under maintenance. So yeah... you have maybe two or three meals during the 8 hour feeding period and then you begin your 16 hour fast.

I posted a link if you wanna look into that.

has not much to do with diet, but hygiene and lack of meds etc.

also, starving oneself to death isnt the same as eating less food.

THIS

i'm not talking about starvation, but under-eating and keeping one's bmi in check ie. a bmi of 25 or under is probably ideal

Oh and it might help if you actually READ the fucking article as he posts several references to actual research and picks apart why IFing has no physiological merit based on loose scientific studies dumbshit!  But way easier to sound tough via your keyboard and spout off at the mouth knowing full well you are a know nothing meathead.  Anyone can get ripped shoving anything into their veins.  I've been on a shitload of test, clen, t3, and ate high carbs, low carbs, low protein, high protein.......and guess what?  I didn't make fuck all of a difference.  Something tells me your entire physique relies on the needle instead of a sound approach to training and nutrition in and out of the gym you goofball.

Do you understand the difference between epidemiological nutritional research vs. placebo controlled double blind studies?  Probably not!  You've got shit for brains, it's obvious.

Actually that's complete and utter bullshit!  You can't get a world class athlete if you aren't eating the right macros and getting in the right nutrition.  Same thing with lifting.  Your nutritional needs change as you get bigger and grow.  YOu need more protein, more energy, more fats etc.  Most bodybuilders know fuck all about nutrition and training in general.  They make up for this huge knowledge gap with drugs and/or genetics.

genetics don't play so much of a role when it comes to bodyfat and leaness

i've been 154 @ sub-6 for months on end, and i've also been around 190 @ over-20% for over 3 years

so guess why i was so lean at one point and such a fat toad at the other point?

i'll help you out here... it was because i under-ate and trained hard and consistently when i was ripped, and i over-ate and don't train when i was a fat toad

gentics had fuck all to do with it

genetics don't play so much of a role when it comes to bodyfat and leaness

i've been 154 @ sub-6 for months on end, and i've also been around 190 @ over-20% for over 3 years

so guess why i was so lean at one point and such a fat toad at the other point?

i'll help you out here... it was because i under-ate and trained hard and consistently when i was ripped, and i over-ate and don't train when i was a fat toad

gentics had fuck all to do with it

LOL My god you're a fucking retard.  Genetics PLAYS a huge role in metabolism, physiology, etc.  To discount genetics makes you sound like an utter idiot.   And I highly  doubt you've EVER fucking been sub 6.  I mean do you think everyone on this board is a fucking clueless teenager like you must be?  Sub 6?  LOL yeah right I'd love to see a picture of that.

This is somewhat different to what I understand a true IF diet to be.

You need to run a calorie deficit to lose weight, so eating the same calories as you do now but fasting in the middle is rather pointless.

Using an intermittent fast as a means to creating a calorie deficit makes more sense. Keep your diet as it is in general terms. Finish your dinner at 7pm one day and then fast till dinner at 7pm the next day. Just eat a normal meal when you break the fast.

It is a lot easier than carrying around plastic tubs of diet food all over the place if you have a busy lifestyle. You  don't eat rabbit food 6-7 days of the week.

Bottom line - it's just another way to create a calorie deficit.

yes there is a pretty much consensus bbuilder contest diet.

when you get to 5percent or less bodyfat once in your lifetime, youll know there isnt much magic involved and no room for trying out new stuff.

youll know when you get there once, this is the best description i can give to you.

i been there repeatedly and im not telling anyone onmore how to do it, everyone has to find out for themselves.

good luck reading all the books, it will help you fuck all.

Damn you, galeniko. When will it be mine turn for 5%?!

I ran tren at 700/week for 4 months with diet and cardio and still couldn't get below 8%. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. I'm just gonna blame genetics, or up the dose next time.

Yeah, that leangains program is aimed to do just that....grow lean muscle and lose fat at the same time. Caloric deficit for 4 days and than a surplus for another 3. I don't think it's as easy as the guy makes it seem...turning on fat burning and muscle building just has to be a more complex process that can be simply manipulated by increasing and decreasing calories on a daily basis.

Regardless it still is an intermittent fast type of diet since you do fast for a period on a daily basis.

I think fasting and intermittent fasting is going to radically change the health and fitness of millions of people. But I've gotten swept up in fads before. Whats the group consensus, same old same old, or are we in for a massive sea change?
Fasting was in the old testament. Not suppose to eat or drink on Sundays.

Was thinking same thing when I saw that pic.   Not sub 6% but perhaps 9-10%.   I've seen people who are sub 6%, and it's an entirely different look to the body.

Some people look better/worse in photos. I don't know this guy but he looks like one of those guys who would look much more impressive in person. sub 6? no way. But I wouldn't rule at a legit 8.
