Title: Houston officer kills double amputee in wheelchair
Post by: BIG DUB on September 22, 2012, 10:19:14 PM
I cannot believe this..

HOUSTON (AP) A Houston police officer shot and killed a one-armed, one-legged man in a wheelchair Saturday inside a group home after police say the double amputee threatened the officer and aggressively waved a metal object that turned out to be a pen.

Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said the man cornered the officer in his wheelchair and was making threats while trying to stab the officer with the pen. At the time, the officer did not know what the metal object was that the man was waving, Silva said.

She said the man came "within inches to a foot" of the officer and did not follow instructions to calm down and remain still.

"Fearing for his partner's safety and his own safety, he discharged his weapon," Silva told The Associated Press.

Police did not immediately release the name of the man who was killed. They had been called to the home after a caretaker there called and reported that the man in wheelchair was causing a disturbance.

The owner of the group home, John Garcia, told the Houston Chronicle that the man had a history of mental illness and had been living at the house about 18 months. Garcia said the man had told him that he lost a leg above the knee and all of one arm when he was hit by a train.

"He sometimes would go off a bit, but you just ignore it," Garcia told the newspaper.

Silva identified the officer as Matthew Jacob Marin, a five-year veteran of the department. He was immediately placed on three-day administrative leave, which is standard in all shootings involving officers.

Houston police records indicate that Marin also fatally shot a suspect in 2009. Investigators at the time said Marin came upon a man stabbing his neighbor to death at an apartment complex and opened fired when the suspect refused to drop the knife.

On Saturday, Marin and his partner arrived at the group home around 2:30 a.m. Silva said there were several people at the house at the time. The caretaker who called police waited on the porch while the officers went inside, she said.

"It was close quarters in the area of the house," Silva said. "The officer was forced into an area where he had no way to get out."

I don't really think it was out of line what the Police did, I mean they were cornered, the man was threatening them, he had pen in his hand (But what if it was a shank), Maybe they really didn't see another option.  You guys gotta remember the type of people these cops deal with on a day to day basis, just the shittiest forms of scum so they will always be on edge!

What really saddens me about this though is that the man had a mental illness.  There have been a number of documented cases in the past where officers have misunderstood the handicap's intentions or that he is unable to control how he is acting.

Still sad the whole thing!

They didn't know it was a pen, all they knew is that this man was being very hostile and threatening the officer verbally and he was trying to stab him.  When you are a cop, you are trained to act fast and take no risks, they did what they were trained to do.  It was a judgement call.

Its not like he just shot him just to be an asshole, he shot him because he thought him and his partners life were in jeopardy!

It sucks and its a shitty situation!  But not being in the cop's shoes its very easy to sit here online and point fingers, I repeat... day in and day out these cops deal with the lowest of the low, so they are always on edge and always have their guard up!

If he was close enough to stab someone with a Bic, the cop was close enough to see it wasn't a knife. So the cop is a complete pussy, who couldn't subdue a guy with only one arm and leg.

If they can't deal with that, they should get into the rent-a-cop business or take up professional bowling.

[edit]
No, I'm not a liberal softy. I'm pro death in many cases, but this clearly isn't one of them. Also, what about less-lethal tazers, or mace? Why did this coward grab his gun first? If the guy had been waving a gun, then blowing him away would be the right thing to do. If the cop couldn't see that because he was too busy screaming, then he doesn't have the skills to be a cop.

Yes I bet he was a right pest and made a lot of noise. This is why we used to have so many mental asylums to keep them away from decent people.
Bring back the asylums and we wont have incidents like this. Integrating their people into society is the cause if this, if he was in his padded cell he would still be alive today.

Despite falling violent crime rates, police are more and more armed with military-grade equipment(like...why does some suburbia with manicured lawns need a PD that has an armored personnel carrier?).  They are also uniform in appearance.....super short hair or bald with shaved arms.....the older cops and fat women are sent to the airport to stand around and stare at traffic all day.  Neurotic and uptight, these cops are walking around in your neighborhood with the same mentality of a soldier or Marine doing a patrol of Fallujah.  In addition, they love to hire ex-military personnel who did multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan....which should be a huge no-no in a job where "public service" is warranted.

It would also appear that many of these cops have never done a decent time's worth of being a correctional officer....unarmed and locked INSIDE with actual convicted criminals.  With their bat belt, snazzy new dodge charger, and a plethora of weapons at their disposal, these cops look for any excuse to gun someone down, from dogs to amputees in wheelchairs.

I hope this officer gets convicted and loses his job at the very least and the department getting sued.  People justifying this behavior are almost equally as pathetic(esp. when they do not have any experience within law enforcement).

As someone else said, if he was close enough to feel threatened that he may be stabbed, then he was close enough to know it was a pen.

Second, there was apparently 2 officers there, since one officer was scared for his partners life. 2 officers couldnt take down a man with arm and one leg without killing him.

Third, the lowest of the lowest low? They were called to a GROUP HOME. Did they really think they were going to encounter serial killers and rapists there?  ::) ::) Its not like this incident took place in a high crime rate location. They knew it was a group home. I assure you if the guy was the lowest of the low, he would not be in a group home.

She said the man came "within inches to a foot" of the officer and did not follow instructions to calm down and remain still.

Remain still? The man's whole existence is practically in a still position. He has the ability to basically move 1 bodypart and use it as a weapon (his 1 arm).

2 cops couldn't deal with this in a better man?  ::) ::)

i hate cops

except ronnie coleman

love that beautiful chocolate man

:)

They should train more cops on how to defend themselves by using martial arts tactics. A simple grabbing of the arm to move it away from the body may have saved the mentally unstable man's life. You don't mess with a police officer... but you shouldn't be killed for it.

you cant hand cuff the dog, maybe wait until they get a pole with a snare?

Should have complied with the officer's orders.

If you can't disarm a guy in a wheelchair without shooting him, you got no business being a cop.  Maybe a new career such as a door knob polisher is more suited to his talents.

I know my opinions sound very cold hearted....  but bear with me, none of us were there to say exactly what happened and how it looked.

But the cop said he could not see what was in the mans hand... regardless of how close it was, maybe it was dark, maybe it was not so obvious it was a pen.  The point of the story is that the cops felt threatened.

Sure if they knew it was a pen and still shot the guy regardless then that would be a dick move and completely unjustified.  But if they genuinely believed their life was in danger then i really cant blame them for what they did.  You all have to remember the situation could have been very heated, everyone is on edge, everyone is in a panic, everyone is yelling, this guy is being hostile and trying to stab a cop with an unidentified object (according to the cop).

Before you guys jump on me for sounding cold hearted , believe me i sympathize for this disabled man so much, my brother is handicapped and mentally disabled and i can see him maybe not able to control himself or his actions in stressful situations, so a scenario like that is my biggest fear regarding my brother....  but im looking at it from the other perspective.

If the cops really didnt know what was in his hands then it was a hostile situation and they acted by the book.

But if they did know it was a pen and still shot the guy, then obviously i would say they were out of line.

See, it's this line -

"She said the man came "within inches to a foot" of the officer and did not follow instructions to calm down and remain still."

That makes me think he was waving it around enough that the first cop knew what it was and wasn't that fearful. If he rolled up(no pun intended) on the guy fast and produced something silver....... then I'd have more sympathy.

Your acting as if the dude would of had a grip for writing. Obviously he would of had it across the palm of his hand. Moving rather quickly.

The difference between a drug needle user, and a crazy person is impossible to tell.
Your not gonna allow yourself to get stabbed with a needle, all on the hope the guy is clean.

Common sense, if you don't know and you got split second decision your seriously gonna risk getting aids.

Exactly, and if you're a cop who can't regulate his feelings to think in a more rational manner, than you should not be a cop. I am not saying they aren't going to be on guard, but if you get that dysregulated so quickly, than the person should find a different occupation. Acting rash is never good.

Cops are not conditioned to regulate their themselves during these situations, which is not good. Imagine if every cop started shooting once their blood pressure was slightly raised. Saying "everyone is on edge and are panicking" is a lame excuse. IF they cant control being in high stressed environments, I say its time to become an IFBB pro or something.  :D

Usually when you hear about non-fatal train accident, it falls under two catagories,

A) Train worker that gets a bit loose with the safety practices while handling their job.

B) Person is drunk or high, and passes out while walking along the tracks. Lots of feet and hands go missing this way.

Truth is most police officers are on a power trip with no regard for public safety, none at all. They cant control themselves and are narcissistic to the point of depravity.......... I smile everytime I hear a cop got killed. fucking bastards the lot of em.

Should have complied with the officer's orders.

Yes, he'd still be alive. Dumb on the officers end, but it is true what you say.

I agree its not an easy one, Its not carte blanche to go around killing, maiming and abusing the people who pay your wages. If you cant handle the risks and the resulting stress associated with the dangers of the job, then dont become a cop.
That being said most cops are madmen, they are not here to serve and protect, constantly powertripping and flexing. Fuck em.

I respect firemen, Emts and other first responder types that truly risk their lives to save others. How many cops do you have in newyork city? How many died attempting to save people from the twin towers? contrast that to the number of firefighters in the city, and how many died attempting to rescue the victims. Man fuck a cop, every single fucking time.

Dude, if you carry a gun to work, it's a shitty job. Let me rephrase that. If your job is so dangerous that you may be shot at, or people may try to kill you and you have to carry a gun, I'd say that it is someone I'd talk with a little bit of sense to so I didn't end up dead. That being said, if you are a cop and fuck up in the line of duty, you should be fired. I'm not saying the act is criminal, but you need to be extremely good at your job to keep it, so if you suck you need to find employment elsewhere.

Another coward POS Cop.  Never believe a policeman after he has shot and killed somebody.  The truth is, angry wheelchair amputee guy was pissed off and wouldn't shut up.  Cop got pissed off, shot and killed the guy.  Why? Because he can, the state will exonerate him and nothing will happen besides his cop mates making jokes about it in the lunch room.  I have actually been stabbed in the head with a pen by an ex girlfriend, it Hurt, but didn't even need a doctors visit.  What's wrong with these weak arse cops not even prepared to get a scratch on themselves in the line of duty.

After the first line the obvious question to me was "Maybe it is because they are heavily armed that violent crime rates are falling"..

If you continue with the rational responses you will be placed in time out

cops are a useless waste of taxpayer money. There is no excuse or justification for killing a one armed man. Jezus, he has one arm and one leg......he has a tiny object in his single hand...........what the fuck would you think it was? a space-age plasma gun? Disarm the cripple for chrisakes.

Truth is most police officers are on a power trip with no regard for public safety, none at all. They cant control themselves and are narcissistic to the point of depravity.......... I smile everytime I hear a cop got killed. fucking bastards the lot of em.

Agreed in many cases. There are some cases where you "Fuck up" but the odds were so stacked against you that it's unreasonable to expect a different outcome. But in cases where you screw the pooch and it should have been avoided then yes, you get benched. You have a lot of authority, a lot of power and a lot of weapons. With that comes the expectation that you will act within reason and have very good judgement.

Cornered?

By a 1 legged, 1 armed man in a wheelchair?  ::)  ::)  ::) ::)

Title: Re: Houston officer kills double amputee in wheelchair
Post by: pedro01 on September 25, 2012, 02:46:57 PM
They didn't know it was a pen, all they knew is that this man was being very hostile and threatening the officer verbally and he was trying to stab him.  When you are a cop, you are trained to act fast and take no risks, they did what they were trained to do.  It was a judgement call.

So - he was cornered by a one armed man but not close enough to see the guy had a pen in his hand?

Even if the guy had a knife in his hand - he was in a wheelchair - easy enough to kick it away or over.

Your reach is severely compromised when seated and trying to attack someone that is standing. Sit down - see how far you can reach.

Why are we even having this conversation? The cop will get off scot-free. You know it, I know it, the cop knows it. Back in the day cops at least had to put an actual knife or gun in your dead fingers. Now a pen in the hands of a cripple is already enough. Pretty soon (if you're not there already) cops can just start blasting away people in plain daylight for no reason whatsoever, and get away with it.

To me there is nothing wrong with what I said.  At what point can you just stop feeling sorry for people and let them take responsibility for their own actions?  This guy is a drain on society, and while you may shed a tear for him, I do not.  He reminds me of this bum that was struck by a car not too long ago.  He was drunk, and wandered out into traffic and was killed.  The man had been arrested many times and was actually interdicted, which means legally he could not drink anymore.  What I see is nature weeding out the weak.  You get one chance on this planet, why not do something of merit with your time instead of being a drain on working society.  I'm not an animal freak, but we put down straydogs for being a nuisance, not saying we should do the same with people, but when one person dies because of their own stupidity, I could care less.  I'm also not exonerating the cop, as I think he should/could have handled it better, but like I said, I have no real sympathy for the man who was killed.

I agree upon examination of your point. the bum he blew away was a freeloader and waste of space ect, thats fine the world is a better place without him but the point is the cop isn't supposed to be selective of who he chooses to plug. a person is a person so he does not have the right to be a judge jury and executioner at his discretion, he in fact works for big brother who has written a constitution who decides those things. he has to (in a perfect world) maintain a level of equal judgment among civilians and treat everyone the same regardless of status. when shit like this happens, when nazi cops like this get away with these monstrous things it sets a precedent on those actions. if he were out of uniform on his own time thats entirely different.

Maybe some day you will end up in a wheechair.  Nobody thinks anything bad will happen to them but it does, maybe a car accident or some guy shoots you for in a liquor store hold up or something as simple as tripping down the stairs.  Then you can't work and your wife or girlfriend decides she doesn't need an anchor around her neck.  The money runs out and soon your living in shelters.  You start to drink to forget and someday some cowboy cop starts giving you a hard time because you smell of booze and because he knows he can and you just explode because of all the shit you have had to endure and you can't take it anymore and the next thing you know a bullet hits you in the chest.  But wait, you don't die, as you hoped you would but you wake up in the hospital to find the bullet ricocheted up and took out your spinal cord leaving your arms useless.  You think you know what waits around the corner?  Guess again.

Man, I don't hate the human race, I hate those that bring the human race down to the level of animals, like this policeman, who shot and killed a schizophrenic handicapped man who had obviously already had his fair share of suffering.  The man needed some compassion and understanding, not a bullet to the head.  If it wasn't a wheelchair bound schizophrenic amputee but rather a young healthy guy, who was in the process of mugging and beating someone's harmless old grandmother half to death before attempting to flee with her life savings and then was shot by a policeman, then I would have no compassion and consider it poetic justice, but to shoot a handicapped dude because he was having a bad day, come on, where's the justice in that?  It's not the first dude the Policeman has gunned down either.

dude like someone said earlier you dont know what his circumstances were that lead him to end up like that. everyone always thinks bad things only happen to other people until the day it happens to you, and its probably the shock factor of that, that mentally defeats them sending them into a downward toilet like spiral making it impossible to cope with or recover from. step by step destruction that was almost meant to be.

The double amputee wheelchair guy was schizophrenic, he ended up a cripple because he placed himself in front of a train and lost an arm and a leg.  He said he was trying to purge himself of the devil.  The dude did have some serious mental issues.  The cop was still in the wrong, just saying wheelchair dude wasn't all there.
