the guy is terrifically strong but is it really "raw" with wrist wraps a belt and a squat suit?

It's not a squat suit, it's a singlet like they wear in wrestling. He wasn't getting anything out of it, he has to wear it because it's in the rules, they want a clear look at the hip and butt to make sure there isn't butt lift that will help with the lift. The wrist wraps aren't adding much.

He didn't make it for a few of reasons -

1) He opened too high.

2) The attempts had too much time between them. This meet was long, 20 - 30 minutes between attempts, that saps your strength.

3) Third attempt, he just got caught in a bad bench groove. It got too out in front of him, and started to drift toward his feet, with 700 plus pounds, you can't correct that too much when it happens.

Love the dweeb know-nothings who think a wrestling singlet is a squat suit. Why even comment when you know next to nothing?

And even if it was a squat suit, and it isn't, clearly, what benefit would that hold for a bench press? None, that's what.

And wearing wrist wraps and a belt is perfectly acceptable in a raw press meet.

Oh, and why should that 3rd attempt count (referencing what the thread's author suggests)? His left arm isn't locked!

Claymore,As you new know Eric is new to bench press compeition. So with this being said, he emotions may have getting the best of him.Eric, is a person who keeps to himself, and isnt used to the pressures, and stuff from bench press compeitions. Now with a few meets under his belt, he can learn to expect.
The main thing is you go him out there, because Eric is shy and now he people who is is.
Now Eric knows what he has to do, and know what to expect.
Eric is Lucky he has 2 people like you and Stan who pushed into Eric is l going for the record.
Eric will beat the record, now that he knows what to expect,  he has to travel, and be in public eye.
Eric isnt used to the presssure,he isnt used to being around alof of people while he is benching plus he hasnt had to travel to bench presss.
I think know Eric knows what to expect,I think he will easily beat the record.\
Eric so very lucky to have you Stan there for him

I couldn't agree more !!!! He just folded under pressure, it's as simple as that !! He'll be ready for his next meet, right now I'm speaking with a guy from Russia that wants us to come there in June to lift agaisnt Kirill and we're flying out to the Arnold in March to lift in the animal cage as well, shortly after that will be his next meet March 24th if I'm not mistaken and he'll smash whatever the record is by then I'm sure of it. Hope all is well with you my friend, hope to see you Monday at the gym.

The meet was mixed - raw/geared. Spoto was in the raw category. It was a bit odd if you were watching, because the geared end was run at the same time, so you might have a few raw lifters lift, then a couple geared, then more raw.

Rob Fortney bringing the smackdown :D

You're right, the third attempt should NOT have counted.  However, to Spoto's credit, I know he has a new raw WR in the bag; it's just a matter of time.

I appreciate the well reasoned reply.  I actually did learn something.  However I still think that they should not be wearing the belt, wrist wraps, or the singlet if it is thick compressive material.  If the singlet is not, strike that third point.

Belt and wrist wraps are considered safety equipment, not for assistance and the singlet is worn by everyone so the judges can make sure the bar touched the chest, legs hit parallel in the squat, things like that, adds 0 to the lift.

I've always been told warm ups shouldn't be so close to your actual lift #'s wise, maybe that should have been his opener and warm up with no more than 75% of his attempted max, which would be about 535.

But what do I know, that weight would crush me. :)

I watched a few of his vids, Eric claims 20" forearms, 23" arms and weight 320 lbs.

And I don't doubt it.
