Title: This is pretty spooky - mount everest dead people
Post by: Stark on November 27, 2012, 08:56:01 AM
interesting but spooky...

The body of David Sharp still sits in a cave at the top of Mount Everest.  David attempted the climb in 2005 and near the top, stopped in this cave to rest.  His body eventually froze in place rendering him unable to move.  Over 30 climbers passed by him as he sat freezing to death.  Some heard faint moans and realized he was still alive.  They stopped and spoke with him.  He was able to identify himself but was unable to move.  Brave climbers moved him into the Sun in an attempt to thaw him but eventually, realizing David would be unable to move, were forced to leave him to die.  His body still sits in the cave and is used as a guide point for other climbers nearing the summit.

I'm pretty sure climber pass quite a few bodies on their way to the summit.

On a side note, I would like to see a sherpa given a physical. Checking lung capacity etc. those fuckers are nuts. "lets help these white people up and down everest a few hundrep times, oxygen? nope."

everest is probably way tougher. Combined with a lot of factors playing a role if you can reach the top or not. A lot of which you can't control. Imagine reaching the last camp and not being able to continue because of the fucking weather. Or you're about to reach and you're told to head down because a storm is coming on. Would drive me insane (not that I would make it anything close to even half way lol) If the spotter tells you that you have to turn around you have to do it Right away.

There used to be a good series about everest on discovery. Lots of hurt feelings  ;D

I know a guy in my gym who reached the summit from the south side four years ago.  Has run into bad luck (logjam of climbers waiting for ropes to be set by the Chinese, permit issues, a well-meaning Sherpa that went semi-rogue, and mostly weather) every year since then as he's tried to reach from the north.  But yeah, from talking to him it's clear that the mental aspect is critical, but it's all about having a good head on your shoulders and a second, objective opinion.  When things go bad, in terms of avalanches / death, impending storms near the summit etc you have to say fuck it, I want to live, and turn back.  It's usually the people that push on too late in the day that bite it, often just as they start their descent.

Total time on the mountain is usually 20-30 days. Can vary greatly due to weather.

Everest is an easy mountain to climb in the scheme of things, even the blind and handicapped have climbed it. K2 is known as the toughest mountain to climb in the world, only the truly advanced climb it and its seen as the Olympic gold in the mountaineering world. But its going to cost you 50,000 to 100,000 to climb them.

sounds like we need to declare a war on dangerous mountains, and drop enough JDAMs on the thing to turn it into one big safe crater.

i envy him, i think, lol.

must feel like quite an achievement to get to the top.

you're likely right. though strangely, i imagine walking to the pole, even within a team, to be a very lonely affair. locked in your own thoughts as you battle against the extreme e,lements. the constant cold along with thephysical and mental fatigue must be unbearable at times.

Walking to the pole seems as though it would be incredibly boring. Everest would be cool, about 30 years ago.
It has become so freaking crowded that any swinging dick, or jane, with 50k can sign up with a guiding company and give it a go. Like it has been mentioned earlier, it gets incredibly crowded at key spots so even if all the planets align on your climb you can still fail due to too many fools with money and little to no experience. "Into thin air" and other books written by the participants in that tragedy give a good perspective into the issues

Has anyone ever made it to the top only to freeze to death on the way down? And has anyone ever committed suicide at the top of the mountain?

Most people that die, die on the descent. They spend all their reserves making the summit and falter on the way down.

Suicide? Highly unlikely.

Plenty in fact most die on decent, they run out to steam and oxygen.

Many people have died on the way down - it's just as dangerous. Avalanches are the main thing. I was reading Bear Grylls autobiography not too long ago and I think he says something abuot when he climbed Everest and on the way down people who had gone before him perished in an avalanche. Running out of oxygen is another one.

I think Bear Grylls was only 23 years old when he did it as well - reading about it made me realise how tough it was - there's only a small window of opportunity to get to the top, usually in May every year - any other time is too difficult.

i understand that it's a bit of a tip in certain spots.. they had a special expedition just to pick up some of the tons of rubbish left strewn about the place..

yeah, it's an odd one everest! bound to be popular just because of its status which likely goes against what most people would imagine to be a beautiful, desolate and tranquil place

I think I saw a documentary about that.
