Yes, Ed's factory was in Holyoke MA. My Dad and my Uncle went there once and bought some weights and a bench, back in the early 70's.

i like how ed jubinville tested his equipment by having elephants stand on them. i heard grimek used to throw dumbells out the third floor window at york to test them.

yeah i've seen those too. they lock in place or something, i would think the grip might slip with those type of bars. multigrip curl bars i think they are called. how's this for a kettlebell????

yes, those are the ones, have you ever used them.  i always thought the grip would slip out of place during use, causing possible wrist injury.

Yes, I used them years ago at my original gym, which is the only facility I've known to have them. Some of the veterans there called it the geode bar. We had a plate-loaded barbell one, and a cable attachment version.

I don't think they're dangerous. They do take some getting used to, though. The handles do not lock into position, but are meant to rotate to allow for adjusting supination/pronation during the movement, almost offering the benefits of dumbbells, but with the stability of a barbell.

Imagine doing bilateral Zottman curls with a barbell. That ability is the principle behind this bar.
It is an obscure piece of training equipment, for sure.

Yeah, with Zottman's I feel like I'm doing a baton twirl at the top of the movement. The tension doesn't feel right. I'm probably not doing it correctly.

Does that have a fleece-type lining? My first gym (the very old-school one) had a harness like that. You could tell from the color and condition of the leather that it was something of an antique, but guys loved it. I never knew who made it, but I wonder now if it was a York original. When it came to that and the one you mentioned, it's hard to believe these days that they ever made anything like that to last so long.

When I asked the front desk to order me a leather model for my personal use, the ones they make now are not the same, which truly disappointed me. The rivets and other hardware just don't seem to be as durable as the "house harness." I wasn't crazy about putting on my head something that the whole gym community had worn and sweat in; especially that liner, which was like a sponge! Most guys who used it wore a hood or cap underneath for that reason.

The only disadvantage of that style of harness is you can't really position it to work the sides of your neck. But, I'll bet that football helmet can! ;)

These (at least, their modern day equivalent's) and the lateral raise version are the only "machines" I regularly use. In each movement, the stress is placed as close to the desired spot as is possible. There is little room for your arms to contribute to the movement, and maximum tension is kept on the target muscles.

yes that one has a fleece like lining, the old york was just made of  the same material like a lifting strap for deadlifts. the head helmet thing looks like you could work your neck from all angles.

vimce had a lot of unusual stuff in the corners of his gym, remember the peek a boo incline bench that he had to use for shoulder laterals. you leaned against it and the part of the bench where your head was , was cut out so you could lean against it without your face being against a bench.

Does anybody remember what the  T-bar row unit at the old Gold's/World gym in California looked like? Can anyone replicate that piece?

If you find a picture of it, there are people who make custom equipment like that. Craigslist can probably help you locate them. You could also search for any welders who perform work on the side. They may be able to do something like that.

this is the newer model with the back support same motion but it saves the strain on the lower back. check the powertec catalogue online they make a multi lever machine not sure if you can t-bar row on it however.

go on bodysolid equipment  you can buy the piece for under 60 bucks. you get a bracket for floor put an olympic bar in it and the handle device and row away.i would sooner get the back supported model though a little more expensive but it saves the lower back in the long run. also check out yukon equipment co. and york barbell 's web site.

when was the last time anyone has seen stall bars in a gym, those were the wooden ladder like rack you used to see in high school and college gyms that you'd hook your feet in to do situps or hang on for leg raises. ??? ??? ???
stall bars finally found the pic. looks like a lot iof fun. my old college gym had these. you'd lock your feet and lay over a bench and do sit-ups, or hang from it and do leg raises.

we had these in school.... infact it was quite complex for the time with wooden beams too.. doing pull ups on them and the benches attached to it. it all could be folded away via rollers. ropes also came out for climbing.

That device that John Grimek is on was also used for a version on Hack squats, as well as DL's.. And with huge weights on the bottom platform. Believe that photo was shot at the old York gym.

But the main purpose might have been the king of all leg & back lifts, the Harness belt exercises. Which could show how strong the human body really was. Guy's using near and above 1,000lbs and for higher reps, at times.

Any old picture of the original Hopper Dead lift platforms, I wonder. Hugh weight was also used in those movements..and higher reps, at times. Something like the rubber tire rebound training, but the platforms were made out of heavy wooden planks. Really strong men back in the day.

I'm not sure when your Uncles "retired" from the iron scene (maybe they haven't), but do they ever draw comparisons between the lifters of their day versus some of the interesting "characters" we have today?

I guess I'm referring to the "kids these days" type of talk? ;D

Funk51

Far as my uncles go, they keep the workouts to once or twice a week. They don't kid themselves, being around the mid 60's age, things have slowed down for both. Pretty much cleans and presses, squats, etc..basic stuff. They have a power rack as the only piece of equipment. With some of those old veterans, working out is like a drug, they have to do it at least once a week to feel good. Uncles live in Hollywood, one above the old Bodhi Tree book store (Melrose ave). the other up from the strip, above the Whiskey.

Uncles don't say that the BB'ers, in the late 60's/70's were that much different or better, BB'ing will always have more than it's share of characters. Just that the old school guy's were more friendly and helped each other a lot in workouts and training ideas. Not so much that way today. Met a few old timer veterans (through the uncles) with reams of training information, knowledge and experience happy to share with a teenager like me (back when I was a teenager).  Listening to them talk about the old days and workout experiences was worth the price of gold to me.

Some of the top or Pro BB'ers of today are heavy drug users, and a few deal. Some are bi-sexual, or just plain gay, and have "friends"  helping with living and  BB'ing chemical expenses. Might be surprise by some of the names.  I'm talking SoCal, don't know about the rest of America. Been told that also happened back than, but to a much, much lesser degree than today. Taking drugs back than was usually orally, which for some causes liver and kidney problems. Also had a weaker affect for increasing muscle mass. But did work for  a few named BB'ers. Some had special doctors who old use needle injections to by pass the liver & kidneys.

Ground beef, canned tuna, milk were pretty much the stable for BB'ers back in the day. Protein supplements were mostly laced with soy powder, so very poor quality. Liver (powder/tabs) were the big thing way back then.

I believe these pictures are from circa 2007, and IMO, that's the best Rusty ever looked.

Last I heard, in addition to the awesome setup in his house, Rusty trained at one or several gyms in his area, also working as a personal trainer and offering consultation through his website.
With his wife as his agent, Rusty cleared some pretty good coin modeling under a "stage-name" prior to turning pro.

I've never met or spoken with him directly, but he's always come across as a genuinely nice, good dude. He provided certain members here some training advice years ago. I don't know that he actually posted here in any capacity, but you can easily understand why he doesn't/wouldn't now.

While on the topic of old, bad-ass equipment, I'm reminded that Bruce Lee incorporated the York Isometric rack for his "dynamic tension" strength training. Some of his apparatus Bruce designed himself and many of those pieces were built by George Lee, Bruce's friend who had a strong background as a machinist.
Other items, like the Wing Chun dummy and leg stretcher, Bruce had sent over from Hong Kong.

It was in either Kick (which eventually became Black Belt magazine) or Inside Kung Fu that I saw a picture of this baby:

I HAD to have one! About ten years later, I was in a small exercise and fitness store that sold reconditioned equipment. The guy had a piece that was almost identical. Of course I bought it. I later donated it to my friends' gym since I knew I'd use it there more than in my parents' garage.

As a kid, I was a total mark for Bruce Lee, which meant that I grabbed anything I could get my hands on pertaining to him. This was way before the Internet. Two American cable television channels, A&E and The Biography Channel, released probably about 8-10 documentaries on the Lee's, which I enjoyed MUCH, MUCH more than the movie they made in 1993 with Jason Scott Lee and Lauren Holly.

Each globe is only around 50 pounds (luckily they are not solid, hard to handle when solid).
(So 110 pounds total).

I used a lot of basses back in the Terrahsphere days, but this one came later. Its a cheap 100 dollar bass I like to beat on, plus it has a Stooges sticker on it  8).

Anyone ever work out on a Soloflex?  It made a big splash back in the day. I think Frank Zane was one of their models for their commercials.  Their videos and ads were very persuasive.  I wondered if they were still in business. They are and they want $2500 for one with no attachments. That would buy a lot of real weight lifting stuff.

i had about 8000 lbs of plates left over in my quonset.  even tho they were mostly elieko i sold them all for 75 cents/lb. as they were rusty.
i saw buddy selling them on line for $3/lb.  he made close to 20grand off my plates dammit.  but six months ago
i didn't anticipate anyone buying them.  he got back to me in less than a week saying he sold out and wanted more.

i wish i would have  bought more loose weights when i had the opportunities. saxon's, milos ferrignos all are bringing big bucks esp. bow, i sold 35 lbs of ferrignos for 2 bucks a pound  a while ago. you could probably get 10 bucks a lb easily for saxon's.
