President Chávez in stable condition

CARACAS.— Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez remains stable within the context of his delicate condition, affirmed on January 2 Jorge Arreaza, Venezuelan Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation.

In a message via Twitter, Arreaza said that Adán Chávez (the President’s brother) had arrived in Havana. "We are meeting with him, Vice President Maduro and Attorney General Cilia Flores."

He added, "The medical team explained to us that President Chávez’ condition remains stable within his delicate condition."

"Comandante Chávez continues battling hard and sends all his love to our people. Perseverance and patience," Arreaza concluded. (PL)

Good news?  I wouldn't call what he's going through good news for anyone.  I doubt he has much time left.

President Chávez’ condition complicated by pulmonary infection

CARACAS, January 4 (PL).—Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez is facing complications resulting from a severe pulmonary infection, Communication and Information Minister Ernesto Villegas affirmed yesterday.

Speaking on national radio and television, Villegas stated that Vice President Nicolás Maduro asked for the information on Chávez’ medical condition to be broadcast.

Below is the entire text of the official communiqué circulated by Prensa Latina news agency:

COMMUNIQUE FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF THE BOLIVARIAN REPUBLIC OF VENEZUELA

The government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is fulfilling its duty to inform the Venezuelan and sister peoples of the clinical evolution of President Hugo Chávez.

In the wake of the delicate surgery of this past December 11, Comandante Chávez is facing complications resulting from a severe pulmonary infection.

This infection has led to respiratory insufficiency, requiring Comandante Chávez’ strict compliance with his medical treatment.

The government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reiterates its confidence in the medical team treating Comandante Chávez, which has constantly monitored the clinical evolution of the patient and has acted with utmost rigor in response to every difficulty presented.

The government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela warns the Venezuelan people of the psychological warfare that transnational media networks have unleashed in relation to the health of our head of state, with the intention of destabilizing the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, repudiating the popular will expressed in the presidential elections of last October 7, and destroying the Bolivarian Revolution led by Chávez.

These attempts have come up against the resolute unity of the Bolivarian government, the organized people and the Bolivarian National Armed Forces, around the leadership and political ideology of Comandante Hugo Chávez.

Hasta la victoria siempre.

¡Que viva Chávez!

yup... i like reading the Granma's interpretation though... very different from the CNN  story:

Chavez illness fuels speculation and rumors
By Jill Dougherty and Jamie Crawford

Speculation is swirling that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is sicker than the government is letting on and there is some thought the United States may be trying to influence the socialist leader’s transition from power.

Chavez, 58, has not been seen in public since arriving in Cuba for his fourth cancer operation more than three weeks ago.

A top Venezuelan official said on Thursday that Chavez was suffering from a severe lung infection that has caused respiratory failure. The type of cancer he is fighting has not been disclosed and there was no word on his prognosis.

The National Institutes of Health says the outlook for respiratory failure “depends on the severity of its underlying cause, how quickly treatment begins” and overall health of the patient.

But Chavez’s illness has cast doubt on whether he will be able to be inaugurated next week for his fourth term.

For the United States, Chavez has been a diplomatic trouble-maker since he took office in 1999. He famously called President George W. Bush “the devil” at the U.N. General Assembly six years ago.

Relations with the leader of the oil-rich nation have improved during the Obama administration.

The State Department confirms it has been talking with Venezuelan government officials and with the opposition but described it as routine diplomatic activity.

"Obviously, we talk to Venezuelans from across the political spectrum, as we do with countries around the world,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters on Thursday.

“But any political transition that takes place in Venezuela has to be the product of decisions that are made by Venezuelans. There's no made-in-America solution here,” she said.

In 2002, the United States had close ties to the opposition and those involved with a coup that briefly removed Chavez from power. Although Washington denied being involved, many Venezuelans believe the United States was intent on overthrowing Chavez.

Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue and Adjunct Professor of Latin American Studies at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, said Venezuela has played a key role in regional affairs over the past 14 years.

“Hugo Chavez has been at the center of that. It’s a very polarized situation and so it has enormous consequences for all of Latin America and the Caribbean. The United States cannot afford to ignore Venezuela, it needs to pay close attention and to try and play a constructive role,” Shifter said.

Venezuela sits atop of the largest oil reserves in the world. According to the State Department nearly 10% of U.S. oil imports come from Venezuela.

Chavez’s illness has ignited debate within Venezuela over what the Constitution requires for a president to take the oath of office. Shifter told CNN that elections are supposed to take place within 30 days if Chavez cannot resume his duties.

Chavez, he said, remains popular among many Venezuelans and is the “legitimate president” of Venezuela.

“There is a sense that he cares about Venezuelans. Some of the previous presidents did not care very much about the poor and Chavez has connected with the poor. So there is enormous loyalty and attachment that many Venezuelans feel towards Chavez and that counts a lot in politics,” Shifter said.

Venezuelan Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said on Thursday there was "iron unity" among the Venezuelan government, the military and the country's people "concerning the leadership and political ideology of Comandante Hugo Chavez."

It's cancer, and doesn't seem like the kind that one recovers from.  The fact that the government is keeping all details secret says it all.

My gut feeling for the last several months has been that too.  I thought he would be gone by now and now I'll guess by the end of the month.

LMFAO ok look Im happy to let you hang around the politics board and post so long as you understand that:

1. this isnt the G&O and posting shit that has nothing to do with your statements as proof doesnt fly here.
2. As you are a foreigner and worse a canadian your opinion means less than shit in regards to anything related to the US.

so lets get back to your assertion that cuban doctors are some of the best in the world.

First the guardian article states we are

First the guardian article states that the US is stealing foreign doctors b/c it doesnt supply enough of its own. Meaning if we did, the amount of foreign doctors would be much less. It also shows that these individuals are coming to the US b/c they want more money.IT ALSO DOESNT MENTION CUBA ONCE!!!

Second the reuters article pertains only to "congestive heart failure or acute heart attack" as thats what the study covered. IT ALSO DOESNT MENTION CUBA ONCE

Neither one of your articles MENTIONS CUBA ONCE BRAINCHILD
