Title: The 90's were the golden age of bodybuilding.
Post by: King Shizzo on January 07, 2013, 07:28:36 AM
Never again will the IFBB have so much talent at one time.  Let's name some: Coleman, Yates, Ray, Wheeler, Levrone, Nasser, Cormier, Dillett, Jackson, etc.... even 2nd and 3rd tier pros like Gunter and Matarazzo, made more waves then today's losers.  Feel free to add more names to the list.  :P

Coleman was at his best in the late 90's.  Who do we have today?  Heath?, Kai?, burnt-out Cutler?  Please.

I think 90s were best considering competition and talent but early 2000s were exciting too. Internet made following bodybuilding easy and we still had Flex, Shawn and Kevin alongside Ronnie. When those guys retired Ronnie was basically pro bodybuilding for many years and when Ronnie retired we had nothing left. Dark ages since 2006...

Kai has really pushed the envelope

That's a very developed, massive back, also the legs are huge and the hams(viewed from the side) alone are the size of some peoples legs

Arms and delts also, but nowdays with the oil...

Heath lacks width, but I suppose he is the best there is ATM

I was fortunate to see a few shows in the 90's.

1988, 1990, 1993, 1994 Olympias
1989 (first), 1994, 1995 Arnold Classics

For Galeniko's post.

1. Kevin is too old to compete now and it would make no sense to try. He's closing 50.
2. Jp Fux had a few good showings like 1997 Olympia where he was seventh. I think he had more potential that he ever showed on stage.
3. Ruhl was more like 2000s guy. I think he alongside with Dexter made the most gains and improved for many years. Too bad all the injuries piled up.
3. Nasser back's wasn't elite but it was still good. He had great overall package and was one the best for many years.
4. I think Shawn had plenty of muscle. 215 with that height. He wasn't small by any means.
5. Matarazzo really couldn't hang with the pro's of that era. His biggest achievement was beating Flex as an amateur. So I agree with you Galeniko. Although he was ninth in 1998 at the O.

6. Dillet's posing was awful. He couldn't do the back poses right so it always made his back look much worse than it was.

the 90s were more entertaining, that's for sure.

these days everybody looks the same. back in '96'97 it was a big deal when levrone put on 15lbs of muscle.... now it's routine. the "specialness" or whatever you want to call it is gone. it seems wayyyy easier these days. take a guy with good genetics, add in 2-3g test, plus 1-2g more other shit, and as much cheap chinese $1.2/iu gh as you can afford and everybody looks the same.

the 'freak-factor' is gone.... everybody's a freak.

No I think bodybuilding is shit today. I like the 70's look and midsections and smaller legs.

I think there are many good movies today, many better than the eighties movies for example..

I did not say I was not old too. But I try to realize that it wasnt all better before, more like you're attitude was better before ;)

70's was the best. No ghey dancing around, trunks were normal size, and the competition was very good. (Arnold, Sergio, Zane, the classic gyms, etc).
And no insulin, HGH and IGF to bloat people up.

yes the internet has a negative affect on bb.. you can watch mr. olympia on the net for free the next day after the show.. easy obtained easy forgotten.. also most of the guys in the 80s and 90s were more charismatic than the current pros.. now you cant say any of the top pros including mr. olympia has a big fan base.. the last bbr with a big fan base was big ron..

I agree. With today's judging, Kai and Heath would beat them. Ok, maybe not a prime Coleman, because he's still a GOAT, but certainly Wheeler and Levrone even at their best, given TODAY's judging panels and trend in what we see.

But here's a bigger question: do you agree that Kai SHOULD beat them. I mean, if you're a judge, is that the look you would reward, if bodybuilding and its champions were solely up to you (no homo)?

Kai (sans gut, so 2012 Kai) should beat Yates (except 93 version) and any version of Coleman after 1999. Haney is better than Kai though.

Please explain to me how any of these guys would beat him. LOL. Dillet?  Really? LOLOLOLZ. Dillet can't pose and he has the worst back double bicep I've ever seen as a top pro. Nassole? No back double bi. Kai's back is so overpowering it wouldn't be a contest. Flex and Kevin I already spoke of. Cormier, best look at the 1999 Mr. O. Kai still in better condition.

Aaron was as narrow as Phil. His conditioning was hit or miss.  You're insane. His back is standout (one of the best all time), his legs are standout (some of the best all time). He's balanced and if you're balanced as you should be, not to much should stand out. No one from the 90s is better than Kai outside of Dorian and Ronnie. Please post photos to prove your point.

Wow I totally disagree.  Although Kai is unbelievably awesome all you are thinking about is Kai from the back.  From the front, Levrone and Wheeler crush Kai.  Kai still has that weird shape that is not as aesthetically pleasing as a Levrone or Wheeler.   Even though his gut came in it would still be considered distended against Wheeler and Levrone. From the side it would be about equal.  From the back Kai would win.  Coleman 01 ASC would crush Kai along with the 04 or 05 version (the super huge one I can't remember).  I don't think Cormier would have beat him though.  I do believe Ray was balanced enough to trade with Kai.  Conditioning is irrelevant cause if the 90s bodybuilders were competing today they'd have all the drugs/ new techniques to get ultra shredded as well.

So tiny joints, proportions and narrow hips aren't structural, as well as limb length, ribcage etc. ?  he wasn't the widest guy on earth but he wasn't narrow...especially considering how small his hips were. he had an amazing structure.

No the small waist & hips and tiny joints are more to do with being symmetrical which he stood alone , but as far as structure his was not special not like Paris , Reeves or Cormier , he was narrow but it wasn't as obvious as Heath because he has such small waist & hips.

Reminds me when Nasser was commenting on his contemporaries

Flex Wheeler, at first glance, seems to have a balanced physique.
People do talk about his “nice lines,” but he has them because some essential muscle mass is missing from his frame. For instance, when he does the abs – and – thighs pose, his lats disappear. Take away his arms and you are left with a juvenile body. I am 5’11” and compete at 285LBS; Flex is an inch shorter and competes – he says – at 224LBS, but I think he is about 10LBS lighter. He has a small waist for sure, but he also has a big butt and narrow shoulders, just like Shawn Ray. Check abs shots of both of these guys. I call Flex the Lord of Illusion.

Sorry but I'm not taking the word of" Bitter about everboty " who beat him as the gospel. I'll use my own two eyes.

He had a great frame, Structure is more than just the width of your clavicles, those are two bones in your body out of 206. Joints, limb length, bone thickness and shape are all part of your structure, as is the way, and the where... your muscles attach to your body, they attach to bone via ligaments, and the shape and placement of these bones, along with your muscle bellies, and they way it all fits together determine your appearance. it's all part of your structure.

The only one of those guys you mentioned with a better structure than Flex was Cormier, and he lacked roundness and that 3-d "pop" to his muscles. but his structure was perfect.

PS "small waist and hips" is part of your structure, or do only collarbones count?

If anyone was worthy of being a Mr. O who never became Mr. O it was Flex Wheeler.  He had 3 2nd place finishes at the O and lost to only 3 of the best physiques(Dorian 93 Ronnie 98-99) to ever hit a bodybuilding stage.  Flex's genetics and structure were what got him to the pros and all of his titles.  If anything Flex underachieved, but it was his natural gifts that made him great.

Same shit with people complaining about Getbig all the time. Get over it and live in the moment a little!

Great guys in every era and this current one is pretty damn impressive.
It is the contest battles that determine how much excitement an era has .
Start with Arnold vs Sergio , then Zane vs his rivals , Mentzer vs Robby, Lee haney vs Gaspari, Ronnie vs Jay, now we have Kai vs Heath.

If anyone was worthy of being a Mr. O who never became Mr. O it was Flex Wheeler.  He had 3 2nd place finishes at the O and lost to only 3 of the best physiques(Dorian 93 Ronnie 98-99) to ever hit a bodybuilding stage.

Flex only looked good in 1993.

After that, the oil made him look shit. The fact that the judges rewarded him despite looking bubbled out with oil is a testament to how useless judges can be.

In 1999, Chris Cormier laid a fat turd all over Wheeler. The judges, however thought it was an extra muscle and gave Wheeler second spot over Cormier.

Flex Wheeler...  ::)

Woman s traps and valvoline bis on this midget black dude with the bloated midsection

Great guys in every era and this current one is pretty damn impressive.
It is the contest battles that determine how much excitement an era has .
Start with Arnold vs Sergio , then Zane vs his rivals , Mentzer vs Robby, Lee haney vs Gaspari, Ronnie vs Jay, now we have Kai vs Heath.
kai vs Heath is a blip on the radar.

Wiggs, I never said that Kai or Heath weren't great.  They are just 2 great pros out of a weak-ass roster.  The 90's had the best collection of talent (from top to bottom) of any era.

I agree structure is more than just wide clavicles , which is why I also said he had he was lacking in the balance department which is also part of structure , his arms & delts overpowered his torso , superheavy weights arms and a middle weights torso , quads to big for his calves also part of structure , Flex was a force from the front & back but wasn't from the sides because his torso lagged behind , his side triceps was okay but nothing special , despite having advantages in symmetry and shape his lats spreads were just okay and why? his structure

Nonsense , Paris , Reeves smoke Flex in structure

No, bigger is not better. Better is better. And Kai from 2012 Mr. O would rape anything Kevin ever brought. 2012 Kai, is streamlined.

Kai and Phil win overall. not from just certain angles. Kevin is still awesome and I'd rather look like him in his prime vs. Kai or Phil. Ideal for me would be Haney.

shut up wiggs

as a long time fan of the sport i can't believe you of all people would prefer an ugly body like kai, his body is a mess i don't care how good his back is

and you have the nerve to say he's better than Mr. Levrone, as a Levroneite i'm insulted you would even make such a comparison

Lets break it down between Levrone and Kai.

FDB:Levrone
FLS: Kai
Side Chest: Levrone
Side Tri: Levrone
BDB: Kai
Rear Lat:Kai
Abs+Thigh: Levrone
MM:Toss up
Conditioning: Kai (conditioning really is inconsequential.  I mean, do we compare Arnold's shape to Dorians or Haneys? Likewise, with advances in nutrition and science people are continually becoming more conditioned)
Aesthetics: Levrone

Arms: Levrone
Chest: Levrone
Abs:Levrone
Shoulders:Levrone
Lats:Kai
Thighs:Kai
Hamstrings:Kai
Glutes: Kai
Calves:Tie

Both are tremendous, but until Kai wins an Olympia or 2 I'm not ready to say he is better than Levrone.

Let me interrupt you here my good man.

Kai's MM SUCKS.  In the gym, it's truly amazing ... but for whatever reason(s), onstage, his MM shots lack bigtime.  Meanwhile, Kevin's MM poses were good when he was smallish (228), medium-sized (244) AND when he was plain huge (253-260).

*snip*

I concur.  And it's important to remember that Levrone was all but tapped out when he took second to Ronnie in the '00 and '02 Olympias.  Just a few years earlier, he had insane legs and a much thicker back.  Age and injuries kept him from toppling Big Ron, albeit that WAS Big Ron insanely overdieted and looking nothing like his usual self circa '02.

Flex can you say short torso , long legs and narrow?
