Title: Chevrolet Unveils 2014 Corvette
Post by: The_Hammer on January 13, 2013, 07:57:19 PM
(http://bizbeatblog.dallasnews.com/files/2013/01/2014Vette-0077v2.jpg)

The lithe, slightly more European looking two-seater gets a carbon-fiber hood and roof panel, a compact high-compression 450-horsepower V-8 and a new seven-speed manual transmission (a six-speed automatic remains an option).

The car’s taut body — fitted to a wheelbase that is about one inch longer than the current car and an inch wider — includes composite fenders, doors and rear quarter panels and carbon-nano composite underbody panels.

In addition, it will ride on a hydroformed aluminum frame that is 57 percent stiffer and 99 pounds lighter than the current car, Chevy says.

Direct fuel injection and cylinder deactivation for cruising in four-cylinder mode were just some of the additions to the ‘Vette’s 6.2-liter V-8.

In fact, the Stingray shares only two parts with the previous-generation Corvette, Chevy said of its new Porsche- and Viper-fighter.

“The 2014 Corvette delivers the fastest acceleration, the most cornering grip, the most track capability, the best braking performance and what we expect to be the best fuel economy ever for a standard Corvette,” said Tadge Juechter, chief engineer for Corvette.

Chevy says the Stingray will rip to 60 in less than 4 seconds and achieve highway fuel economy of more than 26 miles per gallon.

Although the company did not disclose the car’s weight, it should have a better power-to-weight ratio than a Porsche 911 Carrera or Audi R8, Chevy said.

The new Stingray also seeks to fix one of the Corvette’s long-standing problems — an interior that fell far short of expectations for a car costing more than $50,000.

The “fighter-jet inspired” cockpit will be crafted in premium materials such as Napa leather trim for the seats, soft-touch material on the edge of the console, a smaller steering wheel and high-resolution information screens.

Standard Stingrays will blister the pavement with 18-inch wheels up front and 19s in the rear, while Z51 performance models will roll on 19s in front and 10-inch wide 20s in the rear.

“We continually apply technologies and strategies developed for Corvette racing directly to the production car,” Juechter said. “That influence can be seen in virtually every aspect of the new Corvette Stingray, from the aerodynamic design to the use of carbon fiber to the cooling techniques and even in the brake system.”

Hot ride.  The Vette had always gotten beaten up over its interior but who really gives a shit?  It spanks the shit out of the European turds that cost $100k more.

As I said in the general thread... Dig every angle but the rear..... Something about the rear end is just fucked.

Looks very Ferrari-ish from the side.

Rear end looks much better than the mules, although I'm not in love with the tail lights, they look a whole lot better on the production model. Overall it's a sick looking car.

Truly a bad ass car, and you can't fuck with it for the money.

I like some aspects of the exterior. Funny that they upgrade the interior and this I don't like. The driver side is disconnected from the passenger side and the two sides don't flow very well. Major disappointment here. The chassis stiffness improvement and weight reduction (1%) are very nice though! Just wish that damn interior massing was different.

This is an interior that flows well. Driver and passenger sides look like they belong to the same car!

Seems like they are catering to a younger crowd as well, since most older people drive corvettes. This model seems like a lot of young people would want it.

Aside from the tail lights, this Corvette seems great. 57% increase in chassis stiffness is huge and the lighter weight is a good thing. Curious to see what additions the ZR1 will get.

What's wrong with American cars today? Their quality has gone up compared to older gens but why are they trying to look more "European?" All these fords with their knock off Aston Martin from end grills??!!

American cars should look "American!"

If someone wanted euro they'll buy euro

You are a moron.  Because of stupid thinking like that is why the north American manufacturing base has been decimated.  Keep buying foreign fool and keep wondering why unemployment is high.

are there pics from front?

the taillights, they went for the camaro look, away from the classic round lights i loved, but its well done anyway.

The car is actually insane from any angle, best vette ever...totally changed my tune from the mule pics Parker posted.

because they learned what looks good not ass. Ferrari or a ford? HMM austin martin or a ford HMMMMMMM. Come on man?

American cars mostly always look liked like ass, performed like ass, had the quality of a toilette seat.

I commend american car companies for having learned how to make good motors, good cars, good design, efficiency, handling, etc... etc... Nothing wrong with it.

Euro and Jap cars learned what Americans have learned just recently that is all.

one thing, the c6 z06 outperforms this, still no awd, those are some minor flaws, but oh well.
Corvette will NEVER be AWD. And it shouldn't be.

Round tail-lights would not flow with this new angular design.  The polygon shape was a good move IMO.

fuckme , this car is freaking amazing, gm has done this extremly well.

this is such a huge jump from the c6.

first american car i imediately fell in love at first sight.

450hp is weak, but good enough.

the interior makes the ferrair interior look like outdated shit.

fantastic car.

Note the 450 hp is only "estimated."  My guess is they don't want to give the real HP figure yet because it could hurt 2013 Corvette sales.  The Camaro ZL1 had 550 "estimated hp" and it came out at 580.  It's totally plausible that this will come in at 470 or so.

Edmonds is saying right around $54k.

Any price quotes are nothing more than estimates right now, GM hasn't given any dollar figures yet.

well, many ppl on corvette forums seem to want it atleast as option.

corvette gets smoked by many awd cars from the line.

irl with street tires, a porsche turbo will absolutely rape the corvette from a dig.

just saying.

True but how many street races start off of a complete stop?  Most are off of a roll.

Planning on getting this C7 as my first Corvette.

even from a roll, hard to get traction in a c6 z06.

was in one couple days ago, tires break loose slightly going from 2nd to 3rd.

entire 1st gear almost uncontrolable.

but manageable, from a roll, but from dead stop , you know upfront youre fucked.

some really stupid ricer cars like a slightly modded evo 7 will leave a c6 in the dust from a dig.its sad.
Sounds like it's time for driver mod.

Wait till it gets twin turbo'd or supercharged ha ha ha ha... aaah... even if i get a tiny 5.3 silverado l33 and slap a turbo on it in my track car it would make me happy and be super epic.. there's just SOMETHING about chevy small blocks and then some... and slapping a turbo or twin turbo or supercharger and you just start epically winning :)

Always considered doing an STS type turbo setup to keep dat der weight in the back too.
