sorry guys im a late bloomer, i was speaking to denzel the other day, didnt know but they call people "souls".
when a plane is in extreme danger, flight control dont even try help the pilot, they ask how many souls on board and ask the pilot to land in a unpopulated area, then just disconnect.

Thanks, i learn something new everyday.
i should of asked him why are they called "souls" if a plane calls in a mayday are the "souls" assumed to be dead or is it easier to understand

flight control dont even try help the pilot,
That's because air traffic controllers aren't pilots.

yep, i just love how cold they are, the pilot is yelling "mayday" and flight control will ask the pilot to avoid populated areas and just hang up. flight crew are not included in the death count and are exempt from payouts.

comes with the territory.

My understanding is the "quick" way to determine how many total persons are on board. Versus passengers, crew members, etc.

so its all right to land on your house ?
-
Airliner landed on the house right next to my friends grandparent's house back in the 70s. House was vacant though.

Souls on Board was originally with ships and when putting out an SOS.. so they would include the number of passengers needing rescue as Souls On Board

What the fuck?? ??? How would anyone know this? It's not like it's common knowledge.

One of my former patients was an air traffic controller. He was the most severely stressed person I've ever seen, not just because of the job, but because of the macho cowboy environment all his co-workers created to deal with the stress. He said it was nothing to be guiding a plane in and to have someone jump up behind him and throw their hands over his eyes.
Apparently happened all the time. I didn't fly for quite awhile after I'd worked with him.

How can you believe this is true? I'm sure they don't just hang up on a pilot in an emergency. ::)
-
the romanticized image of the pilot is false
-
"I was speaking to the pilot" = I watched the movie Flight with Denzel.

Not sure if "landed" was the verb you needed there.

A navy jet crashed into a retirement apartment over the summer near me. Dude ejected right before landing and no one got hurt. You'd think old people would be home, but they weren't. I was eating lunch around the corner and heard the boom.

Not true at all. They do what they can to help on their end, like giving vectors to the nearest airport, or closing all runways so you have your choice. I don't think it would matter if they're pilots or not, the pilot should know how to handle the emergency.
-
LOL....did anyone notice the "edit" in the original post??? :)

Yeah more like deadly crash. There were some survivors though.

Remember 4yrs ago when Cpt Sullenberger landed that plane in the hudson river, minutes ago, he was on the phone with the traffic controller trying to explain to him that he's loosing thrust on both engines and need to come back and land, and the traffic controller kept asking stupid questions, then the Captain hung up on him and then did the neccesary thing he had to do....Pilot flies, traffic controller guides. simple

was it the Virginia Beach crash last summer?

Worst thing I ever heard on this topic was the 1978 flight 182 crash where the plane smashed down on to a residential street. The wing came off and a man, still fully alive got shot out the hole that resulted from the wing coming off and shot down the street like superman, arms outstretched , screaming the whole time until he smashed a few hundred feet down the street in to the back of a car window.
-
Pics or it didn't happen. ;D

The pilot always refers to the total count as "souls on board" whether the aircraft is in distress or not. It refers to all passengers, crew and infants.
