Title: Post your best 'Shops'. My version of Frank Zane.
Post by: Vince B on March 06, 2013, 03:23:33 AM
Well, on Getbig just about anything goes. I am posting this because on Ironage they don't approve of photos of bodybuilders that have been altered. I put this photo up but later deleted the thread because two moderators complained. What bothers me is I have improved Zane's physique by modifying a previous Photoshop that had gone too far. I put Frank on One Mile Beach at Forster, in NSW. I even sent the photo to Frank but it was returned saying he didn't accept mail from people he didn't know. LOL! He was at my place in Manly in the late seventies with Robert Nailon. I had a penthouse then on the 15th floor overlooking Queenscliff Beach in the northern Suburbs of Sydney.

Anyway, it took me over 2 days to complete this composition. Very tricky getting the shadow to look credible. I consider this a work of art and not a Photoshopped exaggeration.

How this came about was something Frank said to me about 35 years ago at my place. Frank was waiting with Robert Nailon and when I arrived the very first thing Frank said was, "You don't have to go to Disneyland." I asked him why. "Because you have been in Fantasyland all your life!" Somehow I didn't laugh and we really didn't get along that day. He wasn't this great intellect that I was looking forward to meeting. He made the remark because he read the story I wrote after winning the Mr Canada title in 1970 where I said my ambition was to beat Frank Zane. Who knows, had I gone to live in LA instead of Sydney I might have found the motivation to train hard enough to improve and compete against some of the top guys. Trouble was, I wasn't keen on doing any Deca Durabolin and that is what most of the champs were using in those days.

Anyway, I put myself on One Mile Beach after taking a great photo of that beach last year. Then I looked for a double biceps photo of Frank so I could compare how we looked. I had to reverse his photo to suit the light that day.

Here is my version on being on that beach.

The shot of Zane is from 1977. he had pretty good size that year, but not quite as ripped as the following 3 years or 1976.

If so then maybe you should have tried it. You coulda been a contender and rammed humble pie down Zane's throat. Or rammed whatever you wanted. :)

Vince, Serious question.

I know nothing about nothing about 'changing' photos via Photoshop, but that beach photo is amaazing black and white shot  and reminds me of that famous B&W photographer who shot some amazing photos of Yosemite many years ago. (Sorry but  don't recall his name at the moment!)

Did you shoot that photo and was it shot with B&W or color film?

If it was a color print, you did one hell of a great job changing the contrast.

Very impressive beach and cloud  photo  in the background!

To stunt movie. Yes, I took the photo of the beach in colour. Lots of work needed to bring out detail in B&W. The surf that day last August was amazing...mile long waves breaking. No one on the beach because it was the cool season downunder. I don't call it winter. No snow where I live.

The feet in the original photo were blank areas so not great.

Haven't seen Robert Nailon for a couple of years. He has diabetes worries and has lost some weight.

BEEF! YES!!! Ansel Adams.

Thanks!!

I've always admired his photos even though I don't think any of them were really spectacular. Neither have I ever figured out the popularity of Herb Ritts shots.

I was a lunch guest at Herb's Malibu Beach home a good while back and nowhere was there any evidence of his work so I didn't have any opportunity to discuss his photography, but a number of my family members have been models for some of his well known work and also worked in his music videos along with Janet Jackson and Madonna, etc.

And also a couple of national/internation TV and print ads.

And I've never been able to figure out why his work was so darn popular.

I guess I'm mentioning this because I'm actually more impressed by Vince's black and white beach shot  than many of Herb's thousand dollar photos which are now touring the country in some of the world's best museums.

Thanks to you also, Vince for  disclosing how it was done.
