Title: Rick the Rhino Zuver
Post by: Robert Zuver on April 03, 2013, 09:22:20 AM
Here is a story of my little brother Rick The Rhino Zuver.
When my dad got out of the navy in 1952 I was just a born. Pop loved working out and was training to someday win some Bodybuilding contests. He loved the sport and would continue to train the best he knew how. There wasn't much in the way of gyms back then but he found a way.  In 1958 he won the Mr Norfolk Va Title. He used to through me in the air and life mom and I all the time in the yard.  In 1956 mom had my little brother Rick. He was a chubby little guy but from birth had strong hands as he would grab dads fingers and not let go. Well anyway after dad started his gym here in Ca. he started training Rick for powerlifting. Rick was a strong kid for his age and did some heavy lifting. He and Paul Anderson were somewhat alike as they both lifted with brute strength. Following are some photos of mom, dad, and I in our yard in VA. Next is a few of Rick The Rhino as my dad named him because, well you know everybody needs a hook name in the business.
Sadly Rick passed away 3 months before my father of heart failure in 2008.
 RIP Brother.

First photo is Dad and Me.
Second photo is Dad And Mom
Third photo is Dad with his Mr Norfolk Trophy.
Forth photo is Rick Zuver punching Paul Anderson's workout bag at his home gym in Georgia.

More on Rick.
Rick lifted at different shows over his short lifting career here are a few shots not seen before of Rick The Rhino.
Notice in the third photo Rick is Being Spotted by Champion Powerlifter Len Ingro. Len was a member of Zuver's Championship Powerlifting Team. The team also are in the California Powerlifting Hall Of Fame.
We put on some great shows back then.

More Pic's
Rick never forgot the trip we made to Paul Anderson's home back in the 60s. Nor have I.  We got to spent some one on one time with Paul and screw around with his Personal weights in his home gym.  He and dad became very close through the year's.

Pic one. Is Rick myself and Paul. Paul was giving Rick a few pointers on lifting.
Pic two. Is Rick meeting Paul for the first time.
Pic three. Is me spotting The Rhino on Paul's warm up bench.
Pic four. Is Rick doing a few squats with Paul's weights.
How many can say they lifted iron that Paul Anderson had used?

Hope you enjoyed the Pictures.

Oops
Forgot to post this one.
Because Little Brother Ricky The Rhino was so small at the time dad had me build him a Special Bench Press to train on.
Yep you guessed it THE BIG RHINO BENCH PRESS.
I  torched it out of heavy plate, welded it up and good ole Eric Askew painted it up. Rick fit it like a glove.
Enjoy

Great stories.  Your dad had a heck of a build.  The pic of him lifting your mom is cool.  They seemed really happy together.
