Title: Kentucky offers football scholarship to 7th grader!!!
Post by: tonymctones on June 14, 2013, 05:21:15 PM
are you kidding me?

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highschool-prep-rally/kentucky-offers-seventh-grade-db-prospect-jairus-brents-233504532.html

"On the heels of two scholarship offers to highly regarded eighth grade prospects from top Division I programs, an SEC school blew them both out of the water by handing out a scholarship to a seventh grade defensive back."

WTF, Im sure this will do wonders for prevelant "im going to be a sports star/rapper" mentality in the youths these days.

Crazy.  Don't expect the NCAA to do anything about it.

That sentence doesn't really make sense...  still, this kid being offered a scholarship won't have an affect one way or the other.Even if it's the start of a trend.

Do you mean idiots like the seventh and eighth graders who actually got scholarships?
...or idiots like Kobe Bryant who chose to pass up his scholarship to immediately go pro?

This is what I was getting at...but I was hoping he'd elaborate because that's always more hilarious. It's one thing to say you'd like to encourage kids to have a scope of things that went beyond sports or that a career in sports is statistically low. But athletic scholarships aren't that rare, careers in sports are achievable for some and this story isn't gonna change the brand new phenomenon of kids wanting to be rich celebrities. I went to college on a football scholarship. It was  made clear that that route might be an option for me as early as jr high.

I dont have a problem with it.

if a 7th grader invented some cool device or wrote the next killer app, he'd get rich from it.  if a 13 year old wrote a hit song, he'd be a millionaire.

They're offering free college to a kid they think will help their football team makes tens of millions of dollars in 5 years.   Sound investment actually, on both sides.

Ah, I see, so the 7th grader doesn't play football right now?  pop warner or anything?  Oh wait, he does.

COLLEGE scholarships are given out to players who haven't yet played in college.

I dont have a problem here.  F these schools  making tens of millions and paying the kids 500 a month plus credit hours.  If a kid can con the school into paying for 4 years of school, all the power to him.

Youre upset that he's only played in middle school and not high school?
