Title: Jim Ross FIRED (retires) from WWE:
Post by: Montague on September 12, 2013, 08:13:21 AM
Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer just released a breaking audio update, and has provided even more information on the developing story of Jim Ross announcing his retirement from WWE.

According to Meltzer, JR met with Vince McMahon in Connecticut last night, and all but a handful of Vince's inner circle had any idea why the meeting was taking place.

The reason why Jim Ross was let go from WWE was due to his inability to control Ric Flair at the WWE 2K Sports panel that took place the night before SummerSlam. As we noted earlier, there was talk of letting JR go "the minute the panel ended," as WWE felt he should have cut Flair off and regained control of the event.

Meltzer further noted that the part of the panel that drew the most heat for Flair was when he made mention of his son Reid's death and when he joked that John Cena never used to drink before they met but now he downs a six pack of beer every night.

The update went on to note that WWE is using the "retirement" excuse as a PR move to avoid major uproar over the firing of a beloved WWE talent and Hall of Famer. Meltzer stands by his belief that Ross was let go entirely due to the 2K Sports panel because just a couple weeks ago during his Q&A session in The UK, Ross said he had no plans to retire from WWE.

Another interesting note is that aside from Vince McMahon, Triple H and a couple other employees mentioning it on Twitter, no WWE wrestlers have commented on the news of JR retiring.

WWE Hall-of-Fame announcer Jim Ross may have been pushed out of the organization after he and wrestling legend Ric Flair reportedly got drunk at a recent company event, a new report suggests.

The WWE announced on Wednesday that Ross, 61, would be leaving the company after 20 years to “focus on his personal business endeavors.”

Dave Meltzer, editor of The Wrestling Observer, has suggested that “JR” may have been fired for his behavior at the "WWE 2K14 30 Years of Wrestlemania" symposium held last month in Los Angeles, according to an audio update cited by WrestleZone.

According to Meltzer, WWE officials talked about firing Ross from “the minute [the symposium] ended.” In fact, JR reportedly met with WWE chairman Vince McMahon one day before his retirement announcement, with only "a handful" of McMahon's close advisers aware that the meeting took place.

Sad way to end the career of a legend.

I didn't see it. Did it look like it may have been a work?

I understand there was a televised segment. If that is the case, I suspect a work.

Seems a pretty shitty end to a long and very respected career.  Surely a one-off panel with Flair wouldn't result in this?    :(

Is there any footage of the 2k14 panel, I'd be interested to see what happened?

and they bring in JR... ;D

Bob Caudle could at least be believable...not Jim Ross.

I still remember when "The Midnight Rider" started coming out regularly and everybody in the world knew it was Dusty Rhodes.  Ross kept babbling, "This 'Midnight Rider' looks familiar, but I just can't place him!!!"  ::)

I agree with you, but in all fairness:

1.) How else could he have sold such a stupid angle?
2.) If Dusty was doing the booking at that time as he intermittently did, there's a good chance Ross was "instructed" on what to say.

I do try to remember that Ross had a script...Bob Caudle had scripts but of course the angles he had to push weren't as absurd.

I think that maybe I have been too hard on ol' JR.   :-[

Actually Caudle had very little scripted material. Read an interview with him and he talked about wanting to just react more to what was going on.

I not only liked his use of "su-PLAY" but I also liked that he was the only broadcaster who used the term "front chancery"...and my favorite line of his was, "(insert wrestler name) is on the scene!!!"   and of course who could forget the "pier 6 brawl"

But, why was it always pier 6? Why wasn't it ever pier 5, or 4?
Didn't shit ever happen over there?

I think pier 6 was a wellknown place in NYC as being very rough. Plus 6 is more than 5 or 4.

Anybody remember during the "Next Generation" era when Vince would do ringside commentary and yell,  "UNBELIEVABLE" every 30-45 seconds? This was around '93/'94 when Shawn & Bret traded the belt with Diesel and Razor in the picture. Hakushi was vastly underutilized behind Duke The Dumpster Drozy.

Yes, Vince - that was truly unbelievable shit programming.

Kensuke Shinzaki was an AMAZING talent from Japan. Vince was fortunate to have such an incredible worker on his roster. The fake tattoos and Buddhist pilgrim gimmick were bad enough, but the real shame was that the talent shortage WWF had at that time left no one who could work with Shinzaki at his level.

Bret had a very solid series of matches with him, but that was about it. Shawn may have done well, but he was too busy putting himself and the clique over...when he wasn't "looking for his smile."

I just watched it, didn't seem that bad to me.  A few highlights:

Flair saying being with Savage at Mania was his highest moment.  I understand, he works for Vince, but A Flair For The Gold was the biggest.

He also said he was the only one alive from that match.  Savage, Elizabeth, and Hennig are gone.  He also said Savage And Liz were having troubles at the time and that made it worse.

He said he was teaching Miz how to do the figure four and told him, "I don't know why you want to learn this, I haven't beat anybody with it in 40 years, I've had it on Austin 25 times and he just grabbed the rope."  That is true and Stoppa can verify that.

I was doing my shit, Rock was doing his shit, Foley was rolling around on thumbtacks.  We stole the show.

He put his HOF ring on Reid before they closed the casket.

He is taking Austin out after the show.  "I'm doing his Podcast tomorrow, and if he doesn't come out, I ain't doing his Podcast."

Come on he wasn't so bad.  The Bells Palsy fucked his speech for sure, but he was a staple of RAW.  I have such fond memories of the late 90's Wrasslin' Wars and Lawler and Ross were a huge part of that.  Fuck, those years were so fucking good for wrasslin'!  I still remember seeing Scott Steiner in person at the World Gym I train at when WCW came through town.  The dude was a fucking freak of nature!  The weights he threw around were unreal.  Saw him train Chest and Arms and the whole gym pretty much stopped to watch him.  Buff Bagwell was also there training with him.  You forget how big these dudes really are until you are in the same room with them.  There were more than a few moist who-ares in that gym that afternoon.

Cole is a modern-day Todd Pettingill.

One thing I'll say for the Fed: when Solie died, there was WWF talent who attended his funeral and other talent who couldn't make it video recorded small tributes that Vince sent down to air at Gordon's eulogy. I believe WWF also broadcasted acknowledgement of Gordon's passing. Remember that Mr. Solie never even worked for the McMahon's.

WCW didn't do shit. A few people took the initiative to go to his funeral on their own; that was it.

It'll never happen. If it came to that, the company will likely just fold. To operate as a "regional territory" today equates to being an Indy promotion. WWE has no reason to hang on like that. They're more likely to expand and move even further from being a "rasslin" company.

Oh fuck, what a disaster that was!  I'm old enough to remember that turd getting flushed just as I started getting in the weightlifting game.  Gary Strydom was their golden boy.  I have not thought about the WBF in a while.  If the old man tries that one again, you know its curtains for the main show.

A major wrench in that project was the steroid trial that began around that time. Mike Quinn has talked about how the honest (but selective) testing screwed a lot of guys and hurt the quality of the shows.

Yeah.  They had Mauro Dipasquale as the "team doctor" for lack of better term.  He put them all on his anabolic diet (keto diet) at the same time they all had to come off all the gear they were using, other than the chosen few who were given a pass.  I remember Tom Platz was involved big time too.  Hazy memories from back then.  It was a disaster from the get go.
