What's the Getbigger input?
I'd have to say Shakespeare. And, if you diss him, without reading him, you're disqualified.
Thoughts?

"Mein Kamp" out sales everyone, so Hitler wins ;D

Easily Ayn Rand
Absolutely not. I just finished the Fountainhead for the second time and the writing is average at best. Her philosophical views are what made her famous, but not her writing.
You obviously just can't pick one, but I really think Hemingway is a true contender for one of the best.

Good choice, but an impossible question. So many different qualities to consider, different genres, different times.

Gregg Valentino.
On a serious note its too hard to say and too many factors to consider. Shakesphere is overrated nonsense. Takes a simple sentence and makes it complicated. Its just for snobs to pretend they like him to appear intelligent and better.
-
Here are my faves (no order):
Chuck Palahniuk
Issac Asimov
Hermann Hesse
Hunter S. Thompson
And of course Tolkien, for my inner nerd.

One of THE stupidest things I have ever read on this forum. Easily.
The rhetoric of today compared to the rhetoric of the 1500's can not be compared. If Shakespeare read the literature of our time, it would be complicated to him.
Reading Shakespeare is something that has to be learned.

I knew somebody would get upset. :)
I "learned it" in high school. Plenty of better writers out there capable of telling better stories. Agreed, the style of language can't be compared but plenty of people like that style because it makes them appear intellectual.

What is your favorite work by Hemmingway? My personal favorite is The Sun Also Rises.

The correct answer is Falcon of course. ;D
I enjoy Steinbeck too.

dont have one. Im only mildy familiar with his work. Picked up a copy of his "complete short stories" a couple years back, read several of them and was astonished at how he made the pages come to life. Had never read anyone else who did such a thing in such a manner. I cant remember any particular story, except for one about a rich man who takes his wife on a hunting trip, she tries to bed the guide and ends up shooting her husband by accident.

Give The Sun Also Rises a try sometimes.
How about H. P. Lovecraft?

There are lots of great writers who I'll never get to experience in all their awesomeness due to translations and different styles of writing/language used in different eras.

I tried to read that years ago, but I couldn't get through it. My girlfriend recommended it, said it was one of her favorites. She loved the bullfighting, but I never made it that far; I just remember a few ex-pats in Paris, chatting up who knows what over coffee. A dude who lost his balls in the war, maybe? I don't know, I wanted to like it.

It's a short read, too, I should have pushed through. Loved Old Man and the Sea, and some of his short stories.

I tried to read Ulysses......gave me a headache
Besides Fyodor Dost and Bukowski, Henry Miller, John Fante, Celine, Knut Hansun, Yukio Mishima, Hubert Selby, Turgenev, Dos Passos ah that's enough.

ahhhh. I remember something about chatting over coffee, and also bull fighting. Some veteran bull fighter who gets a chance to do it again and gets messed up by the bull. Archer?

The injury to his testicles is from the war. Thought it is never directly stated what his injury is, its heavily applied there was damage to his nuts

Whoa, Wez, first time I heard that name on here. One of my college professors wrote his biography, Full of Life. Ask the Dust was great, he wanted us all to read it. Fante was a big inspiration for Bukowski, and later Thom Jones, a brilliant short story writer. He read at our school. Good call, man.

That's the funny part, none of it was written during Jesus' life. it was story recollected years and years later. You know how accurate those turn out to be right?
