Anyone who thinks that it is impossible to get big and ripped without drugs is an idiot. This is a photo of Arthur Harris taken in the mid 50's. There is no way that he or anyone else in the US had access to steroids during this time period.
What's amazing is that people think training knowledge has improved since then. They couldn't be more wrong.
-
Are you sure thats from the mid 50s? he looks awesome , and steroids didn't hit the competitive bodybuilding scene until 1960 at earlisest.
-
TESTOSTERONE WAS AVAILABLE IN THE 50'S AND WAS USED BY ATHLETES AND BODYBUILDERS ALIKE.

Yes by Russian atheletes in the mid 50s Olympics and it wasn't synthesized until 1958 when Ciba and Dr Ziegler invented Dianabol , and then he started testing it on weightlifters , anabolic steroids didn't make their way into competitive bodybuilding until 1960.

YOU ARE CORRECT, TESTOSTERONE ISNT A STEROID THOUGH.

I could believe he was clean. Training knowledge hasn't improved since that time. I know it is fashionable to think it has, but it really hasn't. I agree with you 100% with the exception of the fact there is a possibility he had access to hormones. That said, I think it is most likely he was clean.
-
he's ripped but honestly not that big.
-
If he was juicing he had terrible genetics.

Brian, I think knowledge of nutrition has advanced considerably.
-

ya I agree
-
i think training, nutrition and supplementation has improved loads (we know wat they did + all the stuff since obviously!!!!!!!) its interesting that if that was possible back then, now u could acheive so much more. but cus steroids r used so much nowadays if someone claims they r big+ clean they r called a lier i hate that i really do. take skip lacour (and im not saying he is natural just that he might be) if this harris guy did it then why is it not possible that some of these naturals r telling the truth considering all the new stuff we know!

he was probably 5'2

steve reeves and bill pearl were doing dbol in the 50,s so why couldnt this dude be doing it also?im not saying he was but he could of been on

How did Steve Reeves do Dbol in the 50's, when Dbol was invented in 1958?
Just as a side note: Steve Reeves won the Mr Universe in 1950, and Mr World in 1948.

Close, but dianabol was invented in 1957 by Dr. John Zeigler. It was available to the public in late 1958. FWIW.

god bless the germans :)

god bless the germans :)
or... Gott segnen die Deutschen. ;)
-
Steve Reeves never used steroids , D-bol wasn't invented until 8 years after he stopped competing , he retired at 24 , 24 !! he won ever major contest , he was actually opssed to steroids in his book he addresses that issue , he said he never heard of steroids until the 60s.
-
testosterone esters were first mentioned in Strength and Health magazine in 1938. Bodybuilders in the 1950s certainly had access to them.
Steve Reeves was a lot bigger for his movies than he ever was as a competition bodybuilder. Looking at photos from the time, it certainly appears he was on steroids during the mid to late 1950s.

Thats a pretty sweeping statement. I believe that most guys from the 50's were natural bodybuilders but steroid history goes back further than you think....
...testosterone was first synthesised in the 1930s, was used by the germans during WW2 on malnourished soldiers and POWs and introduced to the sporting arena in the 1940s..
...the reason everyone harps on about the 1950s as being the dawn of the steroid era is because it was at the 1952 olympics that the russians finally nailed steroids as a performance enhancing drug and rewrote the record books in weightlifting and walked away with a shitload of medals.

i dont think you're right there.. i just think he was always standing next to people with mediocre physiques in his movies and you could tell how big he got.. i always thought he lost alot of his size for his movies i.e. in his legs and arms

Correct.
By 1935, Testosterone had been produced synthetically as an anabolic steroid. In 1945 a widely read book called "The Male Hormone" resulted in experimentation amongst athletes and bodybuilders.
Just read
"A brief history of testosterone"
Freeman ER, Bloom DA, McGuire EJ.
Department of Surgery, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.
-
Anabolic steroids were first isolated and chemically characterized during the 1930's and in WWII it is rumored that the Germans used steroids to increase the aggressiveness of their troops (Yesalis, 1993). In the 1950's an American physician and weightlifter discovered the use of testosterone by Russian weightlifters. After experimentation on himself, he developed a synthetic steroid. He wrote about his discovery in popular bodybuilding magazines and thus the craze began (Goldman, 1984).

please...
that guy was on gear
::)
-
lets see his legs
-
Reeves was on gear. No Doubt about it. What exactly? That's the question. A testosterone ester 200-400mg/wk? An earlier than d-bol synthetic? Something he got from Germany maybe? Someone (one of the historians) on this board must know or have heard what it was. Reeves and Park both were obviously cycling something.

does any one know, who's the person , standing next to reeves??

I'm going to say ronnie coleman had the highest bodyweight at 10% bodyfat..
-
Reeves Unflexed Calf is pretty damn big for his size.
-
Not even close gammahydroxy,
Ronnie doesn't even come close, 300 lbs?? Do I hear higher??

OK, How are you gonna prove someone was/is well over 300 lbs. @ less then 10% bf and completly natural?
You can't know if someone was "lifetime" drug-free or not.
I'm gonna have to go ahead and call BULLSHIT on this one.

a short jewish guy
-
Okay, does evryone give up??
The shiny dime remains mine... pity no one really tried on this one. I know of several men who have weighed over 300 lbs at 10% bodyfat or less without ever utilising steroids.
Below are pictures of:
Captain George Auger 320 lbs (went up to 400) at 8'6'' (photo taken in 1916)
Mr Machnow (Russian) 350 lbs at 8'7'' (photo taken in 1905)
and
Johann K. Petursson approx: 450 lbs at 7'10'' (photo taken circa 1950)
