Title: Muay Thai calves!
Post by: Bluto on January 14, 2006, 03:54:01 PM
One of the more interesting names in Muay Thai boxing and K-1 Max is -  Buakaw Por. Pramuk I'm impressed with his calves! The photos here doesn't do them justice, they're huge and have a great shape and he's a small guy (153 lbs!)  pound for pound that makes it even more impressive. It's just shows that there's more to working your calves than standing and seated presses once or twice a week...

I found my calves really responded well after I started skipping rope after workouts. Thats probably how he built his.

For some odd reason, a lot of Asian guys do have awesome calves.

I find mine come up real well if I'm on the hot sauce while I'm playing basketball. They usually look good after a season or two.

True.

You can increase the size of your calves through exercise, but someone with naturally big calves has a huge advantage.

Obviously genetics plays a role like in everything else, but I definitely think there's something to learn here with the way some of these fighters train... all that volume, high reps seems to work the calves pretty damn good, at least maybe over a longer time period. Skipping rope is one thing, another is the actual technique of how they kick, they go up to their toes when kicking...
So anyone with stubborn calves should try to think differently.

I'm impressed, they've got damn big calves for their weightclass, and they're pretty much in that shape year round.

the funny thing is, you see larger, more seperated calves on regular people on a daily basis. for instance asian women, middle-aged rich white guys with guts, people who sit down and play video games all day long...

It kills me when I'm at the mall or where ever and I see some old 70 year old man or worse lady that has huge cut up calves...I work my ass off for my sticks and you know they have never work theirs a day in their lives >:(

imo i think we can all add size to our calves but to have mattarazzo calves or dorian calves you have to inherit those,no amount of training can give you that freakish calf size imo

From all those pics, this is the only guy that has good calves. They're bigger than his quads.  ;D

Yeah, I've noticed this too.

genetics + environmental factors = physical result..

of course you can change your calf size with exercise..

i saw some guy at dennys yesterday, one of the largest humans i have ever seen...he was about 6-2 350, enormous powerful looking fucker(although fat), his calves were no joke probably 25-30 inches, they looked almost as big as my waist, calves are all genetics

I was told my calves were big allot due to the way I walked.  I kind of used to walk on the balls of my feet. So every step I am doing a calf raise.  I also played ball for 18 years and was a catcher.  I rarely trained calves seriously and they were 20" to 21" all the time.  Of course now my right one is allot bigger than that now. I remember buying boots and having to cut a slit in the top so my calves would fit.

Well then calf raises might not work for YOU. That doesn't make them universally useless now does it?

My calfes have grown close to three inches since I started working them.

Pramuk has an awesome body. Indeed that pic doesn't do him justice. Very strong and physical guy.

Train calves every second day.

one day do only seated raises.

two days later only do standing raises

don't even count sets but do plenty (at least 6 sets)

don't count reps but go above 20 each set. once it starts to really hurt do another 10 reps.

don't use much weight.

use a FULL range of motion.

do your standing calfs with your legs dead straight (reduce weight for this...)

don't watch someone with low full calves train calves... their calves would grow from anything.
