Title: Wrestlers Bench Press
Post by: Melkor on March 13, 2014, 11:39:13 AM
Just watched this classic video (quality is poor). The ease with which Animal and Barbarian nailed 475 got me thinking if anybody knows what kind of poundages these guys could lift? I've heard of Warlord lifting well over 500 pounds for reps. Two of my favourite tag teams, what a shame their feud was cut short.

I love both of these teams as well.
I just watched the first Royal Rumble last week that Deno Bravo "breaking" some bench press record. Couple gimmick plates on each side of the bar.

I know Ken Patera was legit strong, but that's all I've heard.

My buddy watched the Warlord train back in the 90's. Mind you, this was in a hardcore power-lifting gym; he said literally the whole place stopped to watch big Terry on the bench!

Wrestled Warlord in the early 90's at the Hudson flea market in Florida. Nice guy.

I've told this story before. The Warlord is one of the reasons I started questioning if wrestling was a work or not when I was about 5 years old.

when superstar billy graham  had his clean and press challenge with ken patera . the superstar admitted in his book that most of the plates were fake as he had just injured his back and that's the only way he could get through it.

Surely a few fake plates thrown in for Dino Bravo's "715" bench?!

That's a joke of a bench attempt by Bravo. As soon as Ventura put his hands on the bar on the way back up, that press is disqualified. The fact that they still tried to sell it as a legit bench press was pathetic.

If you watch it, a couple of plates in the middle were a different color.

But, that was supposed to be obvious.
That's what got the angle heat!

I loved Monsoon confronting Jesse afterwards about his questionable "spot." I don't know if it was included in the clip above, but i remember Jesse insisting that he actually applied 2 lbs of additional weight from his pinky fingers, so Bravo actually hit 717!! ;D

What angle was this? Was this the feud between Bravo and Ken Patera? The feud that no one gave a shit about? lol

SBG, Franco, Arnold, and Bruno all hung out and lifted together, and Bruno was the only one who didn't pin.

The man's entire adult life was a work. The act got old with his family, too. I used to know one of his cousins.

Nothing like hearing about how Uncle Bruno sold out the Garden more than any other athlete every Thanksgiving...

Leaving the Ted Arcidis, Bill Kazmaiers and Tony Atlas' strongman/powerlifters out of the equation I can't think of anyone who had a body type that looked more like a big time bench presser than Animal Laurinatis.

Well yes, two things:

Well yes, two things:
  • The plates are props to avoid subjecting the wrestlers to pointless risk of injury.
  • The plates are props to simplify shipping the show from venue to venue and make it easier on the stagehands.

Fixed  ;D

Animal had a legit powerlifting background and always trained that way throughout his career. I think a lot of the powerhouse wrestlers from the late 80s/early 90s were big benchers. They all tended to have that typical bench specialist physique - not sure if they ever trained legs! But as Rick Rude said - its an upper body business.

It sounds like he kayfabed his entire family to a beyond ridiculous point. We used to joke that maybe poor David would have done better had Bruno smartened him up!
