Does anyone know whether bodybuilders of the 60s, 70s & 80s were bloated and fat during the offseason? Did they do bulking phases like the bodybuilders of today? I don't ever remember seeing any bloated pics of the bodybuilders of the past and saw this recent picture of Ronnie C. in a Getbig Gossip posting. It doesn't say much for bodybuilders today.
I guess it could be that the reason we didn't see these pictures in the past is that the web wasn't around for easy picture posting and Weider, Kennedy and the other BB publishers only showed us the picture perfect photos.

they were bloated, but since they were smaller, it wasnt as noticable. watch pumping iron, in the begining, you see how bloated waller and arnold are. pros today are so big, with the bloat they have, it makes them look fat. Most still have six packs, but still look smooth and soft/fat. Just my opinion. Oh, yeah, the higher level of drugs dont help either. eating alot has always been a staple of bodybuilding
-
really? you think arnold and ken waller were bloated? ill have to watch it again.
-
yeah, look at waller while he is doing the seated cable rows, or when he keeps walking by the camera as arnold is talking. not super bloated like today, bu yes, there is bloat. Also, when arrnold is talking to the guy about going 4 seconds in a quater mile, his face is bloated. Also when arnold is looking in the mirror in the yellow tank, and says"im pumped". they look like they have d bol bloat. But, like I said, not as extreme as today's pros, but you can see it.

Ronnie got worms !!!!! ;D
-
Another thing to consider is that a lot of the guys in the past stayed closer to competition weight because they competed more often, rather then doing one show per year. Doing multiple shows didn't allow them to get as big...their off-seasons were much shorter.
-
yeah i've run into a couple pics with arnold really bulked and he looks huge!
-
Here's an "offseason" pic for ya....

I wish I could find a pic of Lynda Murray offseasion. She did the commentating on espn when they did the nationals and the USA a few years back and she was huge and didn't even look like someone who could be an Olympian. She must diet off close to 100 lbs :o And she's competing now.

This pic is from last April, I'm not sure if she dieted a little for her apperance at the show but she looked amazing, not show ready but still had cuts. Ronnie was at the same show guest posing and the same cannot be said about him.
-
do you have any pics of ronnie from that guest apparence?
-
I know that Lee Priest looked like Kirstie alley in off-season - but not sure about bodybuilders of yesteryear

This is the only one I have and he has his shirt on so you can't tell how large he really looked.

they weren't as fat or bloated. that arnold pic is after retirement. the reason they weren't as fat is because it was harder to keep all the muscle when you dieted because they didn't have the drugs from today. i've never seen arnold with a gut during his bodybuilding career.

arnold was never over 250 and that is when the magic happens!!!!! ;D
-
bodybuilding.com has him listed at 260 offseason. i dont see why not 22 inch arms and 57 inch chest... oh yea.
-
i didn't know that arnold never went over 250! but i guess that makes sense.
-
Today's bodybuilder can come in handy when you're stuck in the desert.... ;D
-
anyway he's tall. if lenox lewis is 250.... why can't arnold be 260. come on

yes i always thought arnold was heavier than 240

Arnold did bulk up to 260 earlier in his early 20s. He actually was smaller in the offseason though for much of his career. He would grow into a show. He probably weighed in between 230 and 240 for a competition but would shrink down and not train for close to 6 months. He would stay in relatively lean condition, then when he started his contest prep, he would be lean already and just needed to add size, thereby filling out his muscles and look his beggest the day of the show. I think he would stay right around 205-210 and then grow to 230 or so for the Olympia. Franco used this method of preparing for a show as well!

ronnies not fat in that first picture. hes pretty damn lean actually. im willing to bet hes much leaner than most pro's from the "golden age" were in the offseason. when your a BIG guy, even a tiny bbit of fat and water makes you look "fat" to the untrained eye.
