;D  from new jersey to california, from warehouseman to movie star, from overbulked to ultra ripped that  was the path dave draper took.

I never followed Draper that much. I caught part of a documentary once in which he mentioned getting shafted pretty bad by the Weider's. What was the story there?

Interesting writing style as well.

From what I recall even in his darkest days, living as a bit of recluse and hitting the bottle pretty hard he still steadily was pumping the iron as hard as ever.

draper worked in weider warehouse  and on the mags to earn his 200 dollars a week while weider made millions and millions of dollars trading off of draper's beachboy southern california image. draper was heir apparent to larry scott but he like scott didn't have the personality to handle the top spot, which arnold s took over soon after sergio o short run. if you look at the mags in that period every forth page had draper in an article or in an ad for weider products for which he was never compensated. he eventually took weider to court and when he was about to win which would probably be a multi-million dollar settlement. he took weider's offer  a paltry 17 k..

Why the hell did he settle for that!?!?
That part sounds like it was more his own fault.

it sure was, when they asked him why , he said he just wanted to satisfy his needs.[ whatever that meant]. he was in demand for movies and tv, lord love a duck, don't make waves, the monkees, the beverly hillbillies but he walked away from that too.

How does Dave make a living today?
dave will be 72 in april this year 2014 so i guess he's more or less semi-retired. he still has his website where he sells supplements ,books, dvd's and some unique equipment. he sold his gym several years ago so he probably made some money off of that[he still trains there maybe does some personal training? not sure though.}. he used to hold get togethers around the country sometimes in new york sort of a seminar meet and greet type of thing. don't know if he still does that.

Yeah I couldn't remember what work he was doing to allow him to kinda drift away like he did for a while there. Was thinking maybe metal but come to think it was woodwork.

Really cool pics and info, funk.

;D on some of dave's pics you could see the burn marks on his legs from burning the wood. i forget who said they visited him once and he was woodworking with a bottle of vodka in one hand and the torch in the other in cutoffs and flipflops no welders outfit for dave.

what i heard in regard to the lawsuit was .....   the judge was about to award Dave $300000.00 (indexed to millions in todays economy);  weider's lawyer grabbed him outside the courtroom and said ' i just talked to the judge and you're gonna lose. joe doesn't want you to walk away with nothing so he'll right you a check right now for $17000.00 so we can drop the case and get out of here.'   Dave believed him and took the $17k

i can't validate or verify, but sounds like the way weider's lack of ethics worked

If true, then I'm tending to place more fault on Dave than Weider. No disrespect to Mr. Draper, but it seemed more than a little foolish to buy that line. If the Weider's truly wanted him to have anything more than they'd already given him, they wouldn't have been in court!

And, why would they give him anything at all more if they were under no legal obligation to do so? That should have sent up at least one big red flag in Dave's mind.
