Awkward: Clawson confuses U.S. officials for foreigners
WASHINGTON -- It was probably not the way Rep. Curt Clawson wanted to start his congressional career.
Sitting in on a hearing Thursday as a member of the House Foreign Relations subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, the Republican freshman from Bonita Springs mistook two senior members of the Obama administration as representatives of the Indian government despite what appeared to be ample evidence that they were not.
"I am familiar with your country. I love your country," Clawson, who was sworn in last month as the newest member of Congress, told Nisha Biswal and Arun Kumar as they sat at the witness table for a hearing about U.S.-India relations.
Biswal is assistant secretary of statein the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs. Kumar is director general of the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service and assistant commerce secretary for Global Markets with the International Trade Administration.
"So just as your capital is welcome here to produce good-paying jobs in the U.S, I'd like our capital to be welcome there, and there to be freedom of capital so that both sides are in the same territory. And I ask cooperation and commitment and priority from your government in so doing. Can I have that?"
After an awkward pause, Biswal responded: "I-I-I think you're question is to the Indian government and we certainty share your sentiments and we certainly will advocate that on behalf of the U.S. government."
The exchange was first reported in an online posting by the Foreign Policy, a news magazine that focuses on international events.
"I made a mistake in speaking before being fully briefed and I apologize," Clawson told The News-Press. " I'm a quick study but in this case I shot an air ball."
